Chapter 55

KC

Walking up the stairs to my apartment is truly a workout this morning. My pussy still aches from Jared and his massive dick. I can’t help but smile, thinking about our night together, which continued this morning. It feels like no time has passed between us.

I unlock my door and head straight for the coffee pot.

I’m beyond exhausted, but I need to throw myself together before my family video chat; then it’ll be time for work.

Movement in the living room catches my eye.

A dark figure is sitting on my couch, legs spread wide.

The keys in my hand turn into a weapon as I continue to step backwards.

“Where have you been, KC?”

My hand goes to my chest. “Holy shit, Mattie. You scared me.” I look at him, then my front door. “How’d you get inside?”

He stands up and slowly walks over to where I'm standing, stopping just short of us touching. “The door was unlocked.”

That’s weird. Brittney and I never leave the door unlocked.

His fingers go to move my hair out of my face, tucking the strand behind my ear.

His brown eyes go dark as his hand stays on my neckline.

“I’ve been waiting for you.” His words are calm as he takes in my appearance: disheveled hair, baggy T-shirt and sweatpants—clothing that clearly isn’t mine.

Mattie’s eyes stop on the bite mark that Jared left on my shoulder. His grip turns painful.

I forcefully take a step away from him, freeing myself from his hand.

“I was out.” My heart starts pounding in my chest when I turn away from him to start making coffee.

“I don’t know what you want me to say, Mattie.

You and I aren’t in a relationship.” As the coffee starts to brew, I turn, leaning my butt against the countertop, crossing my arms. “We were fuck buddies,” I point at him, “and you’ve never randomly just showed up at my apartment. ”

Mattie’s hand goes inside the pocket of his suit pants while the other rubs his scruffy cheek, pondering what his response should be.

“Nah, we’ve been more than that, KC.” His arms shoot out to each of my hips, caging me inside.

“You’ve been mine for a long time.” His nose trails over the bite mark and continues up my neck.

I try to move around him but his arms don’t budge. My eyes turn into slits as I stare up at him. “Not anymore, I’m not.” Mattie isn’t acting like his usual self; his eyes are bloodshot and his eyelids are heavy. He looks rough, worn out. I wonder where he’s been this past month…

He forcefully grabs my chin. “Is it because of that fucking cage fighter? Huh?”

I don’t answer him.

“Answer me!!!” he yells in my face, spit flying.

This man, standing in front of me, has never scared me before, until right now.

I can now see why he works with the Mafia—the anger that’s radiating off of him makes him a force to be reckoned with.

My eyes start to water, but I hold the tears at bay; I don’t want to appear weak around him. “Yes,” I admit.

“Pssh, how could you be so stupid, KC?” He lets go of my face; his hands go to his head, rubbing at it angrily.

“Do you know what I’ve done… for you?! I’ve kept you safe!

” Mattie’s finger points to himself. His stare is devoid of any emotion.

“Do you really think he can make you happy, like I do? Take care of you like I can?”

What is he even talking about? We’ve been fuck buddies for years, and yeah, I did think about taking it to the next level, but we never officially did.

I point to my chest. “I take care of myself; you don’t pay for my life or for me to live.

I do that.” I know now that I’ve misjudged how much Mattie truly did care about me.

I didn’t want to hurt him. I don’t want him in pain because of me.

“And I haven’t heard from you since we went to dinner, so don’t pull the whole poor me card! ” I say as I walk up to him.

“Jared came back into my life for a reason; I truly believe that.” I reach out to palm his cheek. “I’m sorry… I didn’t think you’d be this upset.” He slaps my hand away.

Mattie starts shaking his head, laughing uncontrollably, maniacally.

“I-–I still love him. I never stopped.” I rush my words out, hoping he can at least try to understand where I’m coming from.

“Well, KC, if you’re not mine, then you’ll be his. I’ll make sure of it.”

He walks away from me, stopping at the door. “Just remember, you chose this, KC. Life could have been so different for you and me.”

Mattie slams the door on his way out, leaving me standing there, speechless.

What the fuck just happened?

My laptop starts ringing from the kitchen island. I look at the clock, realizing it’s time for the family video chat. I don’t think I’ll tell them about Jared just yet.
