Chapter one

ONE

“I have to say, this was the best group project I’ve ever been part of.” Jason popped open his second energy drink can of the evening and placed it on the library table.

It was Finley’s last semester of his undergraduate program. He’d be graduating in the spring, if he passed statistics. And lucky for him, his randomly assigned group was hardworking. And they responded to texts.

“I know, we got so lucky. My friend is in another group in this class, and her group is so bad. Two of the team members completely ghosted.” Finley said.

“Could you imagine trying to do this project with only one or two people? I’d just drop and try again next semester,” Jason said.

“I’m graduating. I’d be so mad if I had to take a summer class because my group sucked,” Finley said. The five team members at the table all nodded in agreement.

“Last semester, I had a guy show up for a final presentation and we didn’t even know who he was,” Amanda said.

“Hey, my roommates and I throw a party the last Saturday of every month. Y’all are invited. It’s usually a big crowd, so it’s not weird if you don’t know anyone,” Jason said. He took a deep swallow from his can.

Finley wasn’t much of a partier, but it was his last semester. And this had been a great group to work with. Jason was cool, and his housemates were probably cool too.

“Yeah, alright. I’ll try to make it,” Finley said.

“I’ll text the address,” Jason said.
