Chapter 19

CHAPTER NINETEEN

CALEB

I sit in the lair, surrounded by the cold glow of screens and the hum of servers. My fingers tap rhythmically on the keyboard, trying to drown out the silence that’s become unbearable. Numbers and lines of code blur together, each one a futile attempt to escape my thoughts. The ache in my chest is relentless, a hollow pain that gnaws at me.

Focus, Caleb. You have a war to win.

But… why does it feel so hollow without her?

My mind drifts back to Zoe, to the last time I saw her. The hurt in her eyes, the way she looked at me—it’s a wound that refuses to heal. I try to push it away, but the memory clings like a shadow. The isolation that once brought me solace now feels like a prison.

A notification pings on one of the screens, jolting me out of my thoughts. My eyes flick to the alert. Unusual activity related to Zoe. My heart skips a beat as tension coils in my gut.

What the hell is this?

I dive into the data, scanning through logs and reports with laser focus. Each line reveals more about CipherClash’s latest move. It’s not just an attack on Archer Innovations—they’ve targeted Zoe directly. The leaked information includes our fake dating contract, and the media frenzy is pushing her company to the brink.

They’ve crossed a line. This isn’t just business anymore—they’re coming after her. I can’t let them hurt her.

Protectiveness surges within me, mingling with anger. My fingers drum against the desk as I mutter to myself. "I’m going to find who’s responsible… and end this." There’s no place in my life for traitors.

I scan my own systems for signs of betrayal, searching for whoever leaked the contract. Each click brings me closer to uncovering the truth, but also heightens my fear for Zoe’s safety. I won’t let them touch her.

The lair feels colder than ever, every beep and hum of technology a reminder of how isolated I am without her warmth. The data streams across the screens, but all I see is Zoe’s face—the vulnerability she showed me and the strength she possesses.

This has to end now.

I tighten my grip, focusing on one objective: protect Zoe at all costs. Never let them hurt her again.

I sift through encrypted messages and data breaches, each revelation driving my determination deeper.

I pace the length of my lair, running my hand through my hair. The cold glow of screens casts eerie shadows on the walls. My thoughts race, weaving strategies to counteract this attack. Each step brings me closer to resolving this crisis. My mind fixates on one fact: someone within allowed this breach.

Someone I trusted.

I stop mid-step, eyes narrowing at the ongoing security audits displayed on my monitors. My fingers drum against the desk rhythmically as I mentally review my next steps. I order a full internal audit of all communication channels within Steele Ventures and Silencebreakers. The betrayal eats away at me.

The realization that keeping Zoe at arm’s length isn’t an option anymore settles heavily in my chest. She needs protection—not just from external threats but from the shadows lurking within my own walls.

As the audit progresses, one of my team members flags an anomaly: the leak originated from my assistant’s machine. My pulse quickens as I dig deeper into the logs. It becomes clear—she wasn’t a willing participant. A sophisticated phishing attack compromised her laptop, giving Kane temporary access.

Damn it.

I find her in her office, looking pale and shaken.

“You made a mistake,” I say calmly but firmly. “But it’s one we can learn from.” Her eyes widen, relief mingling with guilt.

“From now on, mandatory cybersecurity training for everyone. No exceptions.”

She nods, tears brimming in her eyes. I can’t afford to dwell on it further; there’s work to be done.

Back in the lair, I call my head of security, Luke. The phone barely rings once before he answers.

"Luke, we have a situation," I growl, my voice low and dangerous. "I was compromised, and now Zoe is exposed. This can’t go any further."

"Sir?" Luke's voice is alert, ready for action.

"I want Zoe's security detail tripled, not doubled. Full surveillance, 24/7. I want to know every move she makes, every person she talks to. If a leaf falls near her, I want to know about it."

"Understood, sir. We'll increase?—"

"I'm not finished," I cut him off, my tone brooking no argument. "I want our best people on this. Anyone who's not up to the task, reassign them. This is priority one."

"Of course, Mr. Steele. What about?—"

"Double the cyber security team monitoring Archer Innovations. Any suspicious activity, no matter how small, gets reported directly to me. Set up a direct line if you have to."

"Yes, sir. And regarding the mole?—"

"The mole's been dealt with," I say flatly, remembering the look on my assistant's face when I confronted her. "But I want a full security audit of every employee, contractor, and associate. Anyone with even a hint of questionable loyalty gets flagged and investigated."

"That's a massive undertaking, sir. It'll take time and resources?—"

"Then you better get started now. I don't care what it takes. Zoe's safety is non-negotiable. Understood?"

"Crystal clear, Mr. Steele. We'll get right on it."

"Good. I'll expect hourly updates. And Luke?"

"Sir?"

"Failure is not an option here. Zoe stays safe, no matter what."

I hang up without waiting for a response, my jaw clenched. I made a mistake pushing Zoe away, leaving her vulnerable. I won't make that mistake again.

I exhale slowly, tension still coiling in my muscles. The personal nature of Kane’s attack forces me to confront my feelings for Zoe more directly than ever before.

I need to protect her—not just as a business associate but as someone who means more than that.

I sit back at my desk, eyes scanning the enhanced security protocols being implemented across both Steele Ventures and Silencebreakers. Each keystroke is a step toward ensuring Zoe’s safety and tightening our defenses against future threats.

For now, nothing else matters but keeping Zoe safe—and making sure those who dared to harm her pay dearly for their actions.

I stand and look around the lair one last time before reaching for my phone to call Zoe. It’s time she knows everything—not just for her safety but for ours together.

The hum of the computers fades into the background as I stare at Zoe’s contact information. My thumb hovers over the call button, hesitating. The weight of what I’m about to do feels heavier than any battle plan I’ve ever devised. Vulnerability—it’s not something I handle well.

I’ve lost her once already. I won’t lose her again. Not like this.

I take a deep breath, feeling my heart stutter in my chest. The thought of hearing her voice again, of trying to explain everything—it’s almost too much. But I can’t push her away anymore. She needs to know the truth, all of it.

The lair seems to hold its breath with me. My finger hovers over the dial button, a mix of anxiety and determination coursing through me. This call could change everything.

Then, my phone rings, shattering the silence. My eyes flick to the screen, and my breath catches when I see the name—Zoe. She’s calling me.

For a moment, I’m frozen, staring at her name on the screen. The realization sends a jolt through me—shock, relief, and a flicker of hope all at once. Zoe’s reaching out to me despite everything that’s happened, despite all the walls I’ve built around myself.

I swallow hard, trying to steady my racing heart. This conversation could be the first step toward healing or further heartbreak. But she called me first—that has to mean something.

With a deep breath, I press the answer button and bring the phone to my ear.

“Zoe?” I ask softly but firmly.

“Caleb,” she says, her tone resolute. “You’ve seen the news? We need to talk.” She hesitates before adding, in a trembling voice, “I need you.”

The impact of her words hits me like a sledgehammer. My heart sinks, and the anger I had been harboring dissipates, replaced by warmth and an urgent desire to comfort her.

“Baby, I got you. I’m on my way,” I promise, my voice steady despite the chaos brewing inside me. “Everything will be alright.”

I hang up without waiting for a reply, adrenaline surging through me, and sprint toward the door. All I can think of is Zoe—the way she always manages to draw me in with that fierce spirit of hers, and how desperately I want to be there for her.

The road to her isn’t just a path; it’s a quest to mend the cracks in both our hearts, and I’ll be damned if I don’t get there in time.
