CHAPTER 28

TREY

The first time Paula asked Trey for punishment, he said no.

She stared at him.

“What?”

“No.”

They were in his bedroom on a Saturday night.

No alcohol.

A storm rolled through after midnight, rain tapping the glass hard enough to wake him.

Paula did not stir. Trey lay still, listening to weather move across the city and to her breathing beside him.

There were moments when the future arrived not as a plan but as a physical certainty: this sound, this person, this room, and the desire to keep waking inside some version of it.

No fight.

Plenty of time.

They had been talking about expanding their kink.

Paula sat cross-legged on the bed.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t know what you mean by punishment.”

She frowned.

“I broke a rule.”

“In a scene.”

“Yes.”

“And you want consequences.”

“Yes.”

“That is not necessarily punishment.”

“Trey.”

“Words matter.”

She fell backward dramatically.

“Oh my God.”

He smiled.

“Sit up.”

She did, muttering.

Trey continued.

“Do you want discipline because the structure itself turns you on?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want pain?”

“A little.”

“Do you want shame?”

“No.”

“Do you want me angry?”

Paula thought.

“No.”

“Do you want to believe I’m angry?”

Her eyes sharpened.

“Maybe.”

“Different thing.”

She nodded.

“What do you absolutely not want?”

“Anything that makes me feel stupid. Anything about my body. Anything about my career. Anything involving other people.”

“Good.”

They kept talking.

By the time they began, the fantasy had edges.

That made it safer to make the center rougher.

Paula intentionally broke the agreed rule.

Trey made her acknowledge it.

No coyness.

No pretending she had not chosen the game.

Then he imposed the consequence they had discussed.

Strict.

Controlled.

Enough to make her swear at him and laugh once in disbelief.

Not enough to turn the scene into harm.

When it ended, Trey immediately shifted.

Water.

Warmth.

Touch.

Paula rested her head against his chest.

“Okay.”

“What?”

“I get it.”

“What?”

“Why you made me explain.”

Trey smiled.

“Say more.”

She pinched him.

He laughed.

“I’m serious.”

“I know.”

Paula traced a finger along his chest.

“It was hotter because I knew exactly what we were doing.”

“Yes.”

“And you weren’t actually mad.”

“Yes.”

“And I could stop it.”

“Always.”

She became quiet.

Then: “I want to do that again.”

“Not tonight.”

“Bossy.”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

The kink was becoming less theoretical.

So was the responsibility.

Trey welcomed both.
