Chapter 3
They had flown out of Las Vegas before noon, his jet climbing over the desert while the Strip shrank to a smear of glass and heat behind them. By the time they landed in Houston the marriage that had felt like a fever dream at thirty thousand feet had hardened into something with lawyers attached.
The conference room on the forty-first floor of the Tarasoff Tower was made entirely of glass, and Tanisha hated it on sight.
She had grown up in a brick house with a sagging porch.
She had built her life inside a steel box on wheels.
Glass made her feel watched, and being watched was the one thing in the world she could no longer afford.
She sat very straight in a leather chair that looked like it cost more than her food truck and she tried not to look at the city sprawling beneath her, gold and endless under the Texas sun.
Across the table, Yegor had changed out of the wrinkled shirt Tanisha had worn at breakfast and into a dark navy suit that fit him without effort. The bruise on his jaw had darkened overnight.
Beside him sat his attorney, a silver-haired woman in a slate-gray pantsuit named Coralie Whitmarsh, who had flown in from the firm's Dallas office on four hours' notice and appeared emotionless.
"I'll be direct," Coralie said, opening a leather folio. "It's worse than the video."
"How," Yegor said flatly, "could it possibly be worse than the video."
"Because the video is just embarrassing.
Wendell Jasper is a lawsuit." She slid a printout across the glass.
A screenshot of a press release, time-stamped that morning.
"He pulled the merger. Publicly. Forty minutes ago.
He gave a statement to three financial outlets calling you, and I'm quoting, 'an impulsive foreigner who cannot be trusted with American energy assets. '"
Yegor's face tightened. The muscle moved beneath the bruise.
"He's also threatening a breach-of-promise suit," Coralie continued. "Which, on its face, is laughable. Breach of promise hasn't had teeth in this state in decades. He knows that. But here is the part that should concern you." She looked at him over her glasses. "Discovery."
The room went quiet.
"If he files," she said, "and forces discovery, his lawyers will subpoena every acquisition Tarasoff Energy has made in the last six years. Including the ranches."
Tanisha watched Yegor's face change. Something flickered behind his eyes.
"What ranches?" she said.
Neither of them looked at her.
"It's not illegal," Coralie said to Yegor, as if Tanisha hadn't spoken.
"It's not illegal," Yegor agreed quietly. "It's just ugly."
"What ranches?" Tanisha said again, louder.
Yegor turned to her. For a long moment he seemed to weigh whether to answer at all. Then he did, and she got the sense it was not a thing he said out loud often.
"For the last six years," he said, "I've been quietly acquiring family-owned ranches in West Texas.
Properties with mineral rights underneath them, owned by families who are land-rich and cash-poor.
Drought years. Bad debt. I buy them at fire-sale prices when the families are desperate, before they understand what's under their feet. "
"That's…" Tanisha started.
"Legal," he finished. "Every contract is clean. Every seller signed willingly. Every price was the market price at the moment of sale."
"That's not what I was going to say."
"I know what you were going to say." He held her gaze.
He did not look away from her. She gave him credit for that, grudgingly, in the back of her mind.
"And you would be partly right. It looks like a wolf eating sheep.
In a courtroom, with the right lawyer reading the names of the families out loud, it would look exactly like what Wendell Jasper wants America to think I am.
A foreigner who came here and ate the land out from under hardworking ranchers. "
"You are Russian-American," Coralie said dryly. "You've lived in Houston since you were nine. But Wendell will say 'foreigner' on cable news until it sticks, and it will stick, because it's a beautiful word for what he needs."
Tanisha sat back.
"So an annulment is off the table," she said slowly, putting it together. "Because an annulment proves his point. It proves you're impulsive. It proves you don't honor your word."
Coralie looked at her with the first flicker of something like respect.
"Yes," she said. "Exactly that. The annulment confirms his entire narrative.
'He got drunk, married a stranger, and threw away a forty-year family commitment in one night.
' It makes the lawsuit sympathetic. It makes Yegor look reckless and untrustworthy, which is precisely what Wendell needs a jury, and the press, to believe. "
"So what's the play," Yegor said.
Coralie folded her hands.
"You stay married," she said. "For ninety days."
Ninety days. The number landed in the room like a sentence handed down, and no one moved to take it back.
"You sell it as real," Coralie went on. "Love at first sight in Vegas.
A wild, romantic, impulsive-but-genuine decision that two adults do not regret.
You appear together. You host one immaculate, public, photographed dinner and let the world fall a little in love with the story.
And then, somewhere around day ninety, the marriage 'fails naturally.
' Irreconcilable differences. Two people who burned bright and burned out. Amicable. Quiet. No villain."
"And the lawsuit?" Yegor said.
"Dies of its own weight." Coralie almost smiled.
"Think it through. Wendell's suit only works if the marriage looks impulsive and reckless.
If you stay married for three months and the public watches it become a real love story, the billionaire and the food-truck queen, swooning society columns, the whole circus, then a breach-of-promise suit looks absurd.
By day ninety, filing it would make Wendell a laughingstock.
He would be the bitter old man suing a man for falling in love.
The longer it looks real, the more ridiculous he becomes. The threat strangles itself."
Yegor was quiet for a long moment.
"It's clean," he admitted.
"It's elegant," Coralie corrected. "There's a difference, and you pay me for the difference."
For the first time all morning, Tanisha laughed. It surprised her. It surprised both of them. Yegor turned and looked at her, and something in that hard winter face loosened by a single degree.
"Something funny?" he said.
"No," she said. "Yes. I came to Vegas to win a cooking contest, and I'm flying home married to a man who buys ranches like he's playing Monopoly, and his lawyer just described my entire life for the next three months as 'elegant.
'" She shook her head. "I'm allowed to laugh.
It's that or scream, and I've done enough screaming this year. "
Coralie stood, smoothed her jacket, and gathered her folio.
"I'll leave you two to discuss terms," she said. "Mr. Tarasoff, I'll have a contract drafted by end of day. Mrs., " she paused, looked at Tanisha, recalibrated. "Ms. Boone. It was a genuine pleasure. You're sharper than ninety percent of the men I bill."
She left.
The glass door sighed shut behind her.
And then it was just the two of them, in a glass box in the sky, with ninety days hanging between them like a rope neither of them had decided yet to climb or hang from.

"Now," Yegor said. "Your bigger problem. We need to discuss it."
Tanisha looked at her hands.
She had not told this story to anyone but her grandmother and Renata.
She had not had to. That was the entire point of the silence she had built around herself.
But she looked at this man across the glass table, this stranger who was now, somehow, her husband, and she understood that she could not negotiate three months of her life with him while keeping the most dangerous fact of it in the dark.
"His name is Dorian Quincy," she said.
Yegor said nothing. He waited. She would learn, over the next ninety days, that this was one of the most unsettling things about him. He could be perfectly, completely silent in a way that made you fill the silence yourself.
"He's a session musician in Nashville. Bass guitar, mostly.
He's good. He played on records you've probably heard.
" She turned the gold band on her finger around as she spoke.
"We were together for two years. The first year was, I thought it was love.
The second year he started checking my phone.
Then he started checking where I was, who I talked to and then one night, about eighteen months ago, he checked me into the emergency room with three broken ribs and a fractured knuckle, and I finally understood that I had been wrong about the first year too. "
Yegor remained quiet.
"There's a restraining order," she said.
"Court-ordered. Five hundred feet. He's not allowed within five hundred feet of me, my home, or my place of business.
" She let out a breath. "Which means exactly nothing, if he finds me.
Five hundred feet is a number on a piece of paper.
It doesn't build a wall or lock a door. It tells the police what to charge him with after. "
She finally looked up.
Yegor's expression had not changed, exactly. But something underneath it had. His eyes had gone from boardroom-gray to something colder, harder and older. The bruise on his jaw stood out against a face that had gone perfectly, dangerously still.
"He sent the text this morning," she said.
"I went dark for a year and a half. New routines.
No internet. No photos. Cash only. I built a whole life out of being invisible.
And then I let two glasses of champagne turn into six, and I let a man in a pink tuxedo put a microphone in my hand, and now my face is on three million screens, and Dorian knows exactly where to start looking. "
