17. Brynn
brYNN
The mark on my skin still glows when I wake.
Not bright. Just a faint silver shimmer along my collarbone, like moonlight caught under glass. Half-finished. Raw. A vow nobody spoke out loud.
I lie still and watch the ceiling of the Obsidian Suite and try to remember how I got here. The chamber. The gray figures. Leo tearing them apart. His hands were shaking when he carried me up.
Then nothing.
I turn my head.
He’s in the chair by the bed. Not sleeping. Sitting forward, elbows on his knees, watching the door like it might open and try to take me again.
“Leo.”
He’s across the room before I finish the word.
“Don’t move.” His hand hovers over my shoulder, not quite touching. “You were drained. Your magic crashed. You’ve been out for hours.”
“How many hours?”
“Eleven.” His jaw is tight. “I counted.”
I look at him properly now. The shadows under his eyes are bruise-dark. He’s still in last night’s shirt, collar torn, dried blood at the cuff that isn’t his.
“You didn’t sleep,” I say.
“No.”
“Leo.”
“Don’t.” His voice is rough. “Don’t make it a thing. I wasn’t going to close my eyes while you were like that.”
I make him sit on the bed.
It takes some doing. He fights me the whole way, insisting he’s fine, that Blood Shifters don’t need rest the way I do, that he’ll sleep when the threat is gone.
The threat is never gone. That’s the problem with him.
“Sit,” I say again. “Or I’ll have an episode out of pure spite and then you’ll have to deal with that too.”
That gets him. He sits.
I pull his torn cuff back and start working at the dried blood with a damp cloth from the nightstand. His skin is warm under my fingers. Too warm. Blood Shifter heat.
“You don’t have to do that,” he says.
“Somebody does. You won’t.”
He goes quiet while I work. The big terrifying Alpha who emptied a ritual chamber last night, sitting still as a statue, letting me clean his hands like he doesn’t quite know what to do with being taken care of.
He probably doesn’t.
“Nobody does this for you,” I say. It isn’t a question.
“I do it for them. The brothers. My mother. The staff.” A pause. “That’s the arrangement.”
“That’s a terrible arrangement.”
“It’s the only one I’ve got.”
I look up. He’s watching me with those blue eyes gone soft at the edges, and something in my chest pulls tight enough to ache.
“I should be scared of you,” I say.
The cloth goes still on his wrist.
“Last night. What you turned into. The teeth. The claws.” I make myself keep going. “I watched you tear three people apart and I should be packing my bags.”
“But?”
“But I wasn’t scared. Not once.” I set the cloth down. “When that portal took me, the only thing I could think was, ‘he’ll come’. Like it was a law of physics. Even though I knew you were mad.”
His breath catches.
“That should terrify me more than the claws,” I say. “Trusting someone like that. I don’t usually trust people like that.”
“Brynn.”
“I felt safe with you while my own magic was trying to kill me. That’s insane. You know that’s insane.”
“It isn’t the bond,” he says.
I blink. “What?”
“That’s what I sat here all night deciding.
” He turns his hand over, catches mine, holds it.
“I kept waiting to feel the bond and nothing else. Some magic pulling the strings. But it’s not the bond making me unable to breathe right now.
It’s you.” His thumb moves over my knuckles.
“The bond just told me where to look. It didn’t make any of this up. ”
The words land somewhere deep and dangerous.
“It feels real,” he says. “Because it is.”
The storm comes back like it heard us.
The dome groans overhead, that sound I’ve stopped being able to ignore, and the wards flicker. The lights in the suite dim, surge, dim again. Outside the windows the lunar storm slams down a second front, lightning crawling sideways across the sealed sky.
A chime sounds. The resort’s voice, thin and crackling through failing magic.
“Lunar surge. All guests are confined to quarters. Wards reinforcing.”
The suite doors seal themselves with a soft, final click.
“Well,” I say. “Trapped again.”
“Eclipse has terrible timing.”
“Or perfect timing.” I’m still holding his hand. I notice I haven’t let go. “Depends who you ask.”
He looks at me. The air between us changes the way it does right before the magic detonates, except this time there’s no chandelier to flare, no candles to blow out. Just us. Just heat with nowhere left to go.
“Brynn.” My name in his mouth, low and careful. “I’m running out of reasons to stop.”
“Good,” I breathe. “Because, I was running out of patience.”
He kisses me and the world tips.
It’s not the dining table and it’s not the balcony. Those were storms. This is the thing the storms were building toward. Slow at first, like he’s making sure, his hand sliding into my hair and tilting my face up to his, and then I make a sound against his mouth and slow burns clean away.
I pull him down onto the bed.
He comes willingly, bracing himself over me, careful even now, even gone, and I drag at his torn shirt until the buttons give.
“You’re ruining my shirt,” he says, not stopping me.
“You have forty of them.”
“Thirty-eight.”
“Of course you counted.”
“I count everything.” His mouth drops to my jaw. “You’ll get used to it.”
And then it’s off, and there’s so much warm skin under my hands I forget how to think.
“You’re shaking,” he says against my throat.
“So are you.”
“I know.” His mouth moves lower. “I can’t make it stop.”
The mark on my collarbone flares brighter when his lips find it. He freezes. I feel it. Then he makes a low, wrecked sound and kisses it like he wants to finish what the bond started.
My dress is gone somewhere. I don’t remember it leaving. His hands are everywhere and mine are everywhere and the heat between us climbs and climbs with no wall left anywhere to hide behind.
“Brynn.” A growl now, that one that isn’t human. “If we do this now, it’s done. The bond. Me. All of it. There’s no taking it back.”
“I know.” I pull his face up to mine. “I’m not asking to take it back.”
His control snaps. I feel it go, feel the moment the careful, contained Ice King burns away and leaves only this, only us, his weight settling over me and his mouth claiming mine and the bond pouring white-hot through both of us until I can’t tell where I end and he starts.
He kisses my body like he’s got nowhere else to be. Throat. Collarbone, where the mark flares hotter under his mouth. Lower. His hands push my knees apart and he settles between them like he belongs there.
“Leo.” My voice cracks. “What are you...”
“Hush.” He looks up the length of me, eyes silver, mouth already at the inside of my thigh. “Let me taste you.”
His first lick through my folds steals the air out of me.
He takes his time. The man who counts hours and notices how I take my coffee is not going to rush this. His mouth works slow and deliberate, his tongue finding the spot that makes me gasp and then staying there, licking over and over, until my hips lift off the bed on their own.
“That’s it,” he breathes against me. “I can feel what it does to you. Through the bond.”
“Then stop talking and…”
He closes his mouth around my clit and sucks, and whatever I was going to say dies in my throat.
I grab the sheets. The headboard. His hair. Anything. His tongue circles and flicks and his mouth pulls and the heat coils tight and low and unbearable, and through it all the bond is feeding it back to me doubled, his hunger pouring into mine until I can’t tell whose pleasure this even is.
He slides one finger into me.
“You’re so wet,” he whispers. Then he slides the second one inside.
I make a sound I’ve never made in my life.
“There.” His voice is a wreck. “Right there. You feel so good.”
His fingers curl inside me and stroke and his mouth never stops licking and sucking and the whole thing builds so fast it amazes me.
The symbols on the walls pulse in time with my heartbeat.
The mark on my collarbone burns. I’m climbing toward something with no brakes and no floor and he knows it, he can feel every inch of it through the thread between us, and he chases it harder.
“Leo. Leo, I’m going to...”
“I know.” His fingers drive deeper. “Let go. I’ve got you.”
I break apart.
My climax tears through me, sharp and endless, my back arching off the bed and his name ripping out of me and the bond catching fire with it.
“Ahhhh, Leo. I’m coming!”
White light floods behind my eyes. My magic rolls out of me and every candle in the suite that survived the storm explodes into silver flame at once.
He works me through all of it. Slow now. Gentle. Until I’m shaking and boneless and gasping his name like it’s the only word I know.
“You are so beautiful,” he says against my hip. “You have no idea.”
I’m still trembling when he kisses his way back up my body. Still half-gone. I reach for him, greedy, ready to drag him over me and finish this, the bond howling at me to finish this.
And then, the floor screams.
It isn’t a sound, not really. It’s a feeling, a pressure that slams up through the foundations of the resort and into my bones, behind my teeth, that ancient patient thing I’ve felt humming under everything since the first storm.
Except now it’s not humming.
Now it’s awake.
Leo goes rigid above me. His head snaps up. His eyes flood silver.
“What the hell was that?” he says.
The mark on my collarbone is blazing. So bright it throws light across his face.
And the symbols, my symbols, the ones that burned across the villa walls and the greenhouse and the gardens, they’re surfacing again.
On the floor. The ceiling. Crawling up the walls of the Obsidian Suite in lines of silver fire, faster than I’ve ever seen them move, all of them pointing down.
Down. Toward the thing beneath us.
“Brynn.” Leo’s voice has gone very quiet. “Your eyes.”
“What about my eyes?”
“They’re glowing.”
The pressure builds. The whole suite trembles. Somewhere far below, deeper than the tunnels, deeper than the vaults, something enormous shifts its weight and the entire resort groans around it like a ship in a storm.
And in a voice that is every voice and no voice, the same voice that named our bond on the very first night, something speaks. Not through the mirrors this time. Through me. Through my own mouth, in a language I shouldn’t know.
The words come out of me before I can stop them.
“Seven hundred years. The throne has been waiting for me.”
