23 Franco

Iheaded back from the farm when I noticed Kit was on edge again. She kept looking over her shoulder without paying attention to anything in front of her. After letting her rest with me last night, I wanted to check on her again. We parted ways once she woke up, and I hated being away from her.

Getting in her path, I could tell she needed to talk, but I still wasn’t someone she probably wanted to talk to. Almost being near my room, any of the others would be right inside if I needed to holler for them.

“Are you alright?” My question stopped her in her tracks as she realized she completely forgot the world around her.

Her eyes went wide with wonder, contemplating how she was going to respond because she knew I’d be able to tell if she was lying.

Her lemon scent was strong, and it made my nose twitch because it wasn’t like her Alpha’s scent I normally got when I took a sniff of her.

That was odd because typically, you could no longer smell an Omega’s scent unless it was between their legs after being marked.

I could tell this didn’t come from having sex because she didn’t smell of an orgasm.

“Just a really long day,” she told me a half truth.

“You look like you’re being hunted.” Narrowing my eyes on her, she knew she couldn’t avoid it when I brought it up.

Rolling her eyes, she only did that in annoyance of what I said.

She then relented just a little with a sigh because she knew I wasn’t going anywhere until I got a little from her to placate my need for an answer.

“I’ve just felt off. It’s almost like feeling someone watching me constantly from behind, but I never see their face.

It’s putting me on edge to not have the answers that would help it. ”

I was surprised she confessed to me so easily, but I also knew she needed help.

Whether she wanted to admit it to me or not, I could tell she said it from a place of needing protection by people she trusted.

A vise squeezed my heart because if she felt that way, it meant something dark was looming near us.

I could tell she had been through some shit, so I knew better than to deny what she felt.

“What would make you feel better?”

The corner of her mouth kicked up when she finally met my gaze. “Saul’s head served on a silver platter.”

Snorting, we finally knew all the truths about that bastard.

Why she wanted him dead, and it came with learning of his betrayal to our family.

Shaking my head just a bit, I reached out my hand for her to follow me.

“Why don’t you come back to our room for a bit?

The boys have been doing a poker tournament while we’re stuck in here.

I know they wouldn’t mind if you joined. You used to drain our pockets dry.”

“That sounds like a lot of fun, but I have a lot to do around here. The others have been breaking their backs to keep things going in my absence, so it wouldn’t be fair to leave it to Raphael to deal with this problem by himself.

He’s been the one doing the hard work for the compound as I’ve been running around with my head cut off to get answers. ”

“You know, I think he’d understand if you took a little bit of a break to have some fun.” She knew I wasn’t going to budge on this, so she checked her watch.

She made a few faces and looked like she was swishing something in her mouth before she finally relented again. “I can come for a few minutes, but only to watch.”

Slipping her dainty hand in mine, it sent a trickle of fire up my arm, right to my heart.

She felt so right to have next to me, and that was unnerving me in other ways.

Kit remained the only woman any of us had ever loved, and those feelings weren’t going anywhere soon.

She was still the same woman we had all fallen in love with over a decade ago.

She just had a harder exterior to protect herself, but I couldn’t say I minded it.

Once we got into the room, the others were laughing but silenced when they saw her with me. She gave them a small wave before hooking her thumb in my direction. “Franco offered for me to come say hi for a minute, but I can go if you don’t want me here.”

What surprised all of us the most was when Jericho jumped from his chair and ran to her with his arms open to hug her. “Kit! I’ve missed you, but Anika has been doing a great job.”

Kit returned the hug, shocking us because we didn’t know when they became friends.

It was a small relief, though, because we all still loved the woman that he had his arms around.

If they were already this cozy, it might be easier for us to be as well.

“Sorry about the switch, but I’ve been needed for other things in the compound.

It’s hard playing hostess to so many packs while still maintaining my own. ”

“Don’t worry about a thing,” he promised something between them that none of us were clued in on. Well, except Turner. He smirked as though he knew exactly what they were talking about.

Dragging her to the table, he made sure to give her a seat while taking his own.

It didn’t take long for everyone to start talking and laughing while they enjoyed her company.

As I stood on the side, I just delighted in all of us finally getting along again.

Two weeks, and I finally got her to come into our home to spend time with us.

While we had been a family without her, something had always been missing.

It was Kit the whole time. This felt complete, but I knew it didn’t feel quite real because she didn’t belong to us.

Keeping my dark thoughts to myself, I knew to just enjoy it while it lasted.

This joy wouldn’t come around a third time, but I knew this would have to end at some point.

My heart hated that. The logic of it all kept trying to crash down over top of me because I knew she belonged to someone else.

It wasn’t long before her phone buzzed, so she looked at it. Her face morphed from peaceful to troubled almost instantly.

“I have to get going but thank you for letting me come say hi for a minute.” She stood from the table and made her way to the door.

“You’re welcome in here anytime,” Ryatt communicated to her. With our kind, honesty could be heard, especially when an Alpha nearly commanded it.

“I appreciate that, thank you.” Leaving us to our game, I wasn’t the only one to find it odd with how she interacted at the end.

“Everyone saw her face, right?” Kashmir fretted.

“That text had something bad on it,” Kayos nearly growled.

“More reason to keep watch over her to make sure she stays safe, and we need to listen closely to make sure something else isn’t at work right now.” Ryatt let his eyes take in the closed door, knowing this was only the beginning of something else.
