Without GLASS, the penthouse becomes human.
Doors must be pushed.
The first hour after the siege is spent discovering how many ordinary actions the residence delegated to code.
The pantry has no visible latch. The toilets require an electronic valve.
The blackout blinds cannot be raised without a motor.
One technician spends twenty minutes searching for a light switch I removed from the original plan because manual controls “introduced ambiguity.”
Maya hears that explanation and says, “Ambiguity is another word for other people.”
I have no useful response.
Noor establishes a temporary command post in the library.
Four security staff from the lower floors are treated for smoke exposure.
One guard has his sleeve pinned to a cable tray and refuses to describe how.
Maya drinks water from a bottle, wrapped in a gray blanket, and gives the clearest account of the breach despite the electrical burn on her shoulder.
She does not sit beside me.
I remain close enough to intervene and far enough to respect the choice. The distance becomes a measurement more difficult than any sensor.
At 5:10 a.m., engineers restore the manual medical suite. Noor orders both of us examined. Maya allows a nurse to inspect her heart and burn. I stand outside the room because she does not invite me in.
The nurse closes the door by hand.
I experience the closed surface without data.
Noor finds me there. “You are doing it again.”
“I am standing.”
“You are treating the door as a threat.”
“It contains an injured person.”
“It contains a competent adult with a nurse.”
I look at her.
“You want a task?” she asks. “Build her a key that does not depend on your survival.”
The existing root architecture routes every authority path through my biometric enclave. Maya’s prototype uses both of us, but if I am unconscious or dead, her access degrades to emergency release. It was designed as leverage, not equality.
I take the paired rings to the dead server core.
Noor joins me with a hardware engineer who has signed more confidentiality agreements than he can remember. We work on paper and isolated diagnostic boards. No central system. No predictive assistance. Every choice visible.
The engineer writes a threat model on paper before touching either token.
THREAT ONE: JULIAN BLACKWELL.
He hesitates after the name.
“Continue,” I say.
THREAT TWO: MAYA PAGER UNDER COERCION.
THREAT THREE: NOOR SHAH COMPROMISED OR INCAPACITATED.
THREAT FOUR: RESIDENCE CORE HOSTILE.
THREAT FIVE: EXTERNAL AUTHORITY USING EMERGENCY LANGUAGE TO CREATE PERMANENT ACCESS.
Every earlier design treated me as the solution to those conditions. The new one begins by assuming I may be one of them.
“No override can depend on Mr. Blackwell’s death,” Noor says. “That turns survival into custody.”
The engineer crosses out my old dead-man release.
“No departure alert to him,” she continues. “Not delayed. Not anonymized. None.”
“Then we lose perimeter awareness,” he says.
“Maya does not lose it,” I answer. “Noor does not lose it. I lose it.”
The engineer looks from the paper to me. “You want the system to distinguish between residence security and your knowledge.”
“Yes.”
He circles THREAT ONE.
We build the new token around negative authority.
It does not merely list what Maya may open. It lists what I may not know.
I cannot see whether her bedroom is occupied.
I cannot see whether an exterior route was used.
I cannot restore acoustic reconstruction.
I cannot change the privacy template by declaring maintenance.
I cannot create a new resident profile from derived data.
I cannot issue an emergency grant that survives ten minutes without Noor or an outside reviewer.
The prohibitions live in a hardware enclave whose update port is physically sealed under two different keys. One belongs to Maya. One belongs to the Open Glass attorney Noor has not yet hired but has already decided I will dislike.
“What if both keys are unavailable during a fire?” the engineer asks.
“Mechanical release,” Maya says from the doorway.
We turn.
She stands wrapped in the gray blanket, one shoulder bandaged, hair still carrying soot. I did not hear the medical-suite door open. The absence of notification has already begun to work.
“You should be resting,” I say.
“You should be designing systems that survive people resting.”
The nurse stands behind her and gives me a look that confirms Maya left with permission.
Maya comes to the table and reads the threat model.
Her finger stops on my name.
“At least the documentation is improving.”
“We have not completed coercion response,” Noor says.
Maya pulls a chair closer without sitting. “Do not make the token guess coercion from pulse, voice, or facial expression. That becomes another model.”
“Then how does it respond?” the engineer asks.
“With options. A silent duress phrase I choose. A mechanical pause that gives me time. A route to Noor and outside counsel. No automatic punishment of whoever is near me.”
“What if you cannot speak?”
“A physical sequence on the ring.”
“What sequence?” I ask.
She looks at me. “One you do not know.”
The old instinct moves before reason: learn the sequence so I can detect it, protect against accidental use, recognize danger.
I let the need pass without turning it into a question.
“Correct,” I say.
Maya notices.
We red-team the design before the hardware cools.
The engineer gives me a diagnostic token with simulated root and instructs me to revoke Maya’s exterior access. The enclave rejects the command.
I declare a medical emergency. It grants me local lighting and a call channel, not her door.
I claim the ring has been stolen. The system freezes changes and asks Noor for an in-person review. It does not lock Maya inside.
I attempt a firmware update signed by my original creator key.
CREATOR AUTHORITY OBSOLETE.
The words remain on the small screen.
Maya reads them over my shoulder.
“How does that feel?” she asks.
“Correct.”
“That was not the question.”
“Painful.”
“Better.”
We test her authority next. Maya revokes my bedroom access to the residence network. The enclave obeys. She opens every exterior route. It obeys. She requests a log of who can see the action. The answer lists Noor and the external audit channel, not me.
Then she cancels the departure without using it.
The test is not whether she leaves.
It is whether she can.
The new design separates authority into three layers.
Maya controls residence exits and can revoke me.
Noor controls security overrides and can revoke either of us during an emergency.
I retain local residence functions but cannot remove Maya’s access or conceal an update.
Any change requires two keys, one of which cannot be mine.
“Make her voice primary on exterior doors,” I say.
The engineer looks up. “Above yours?”
“Yes.”
“That creates a security inversion if she is coerced.”
“No. It creates her house as well as mine.”
Noor watches me. “Is that what you intend?”
The possessive instinct answers first. I want her here. I want every room to recognize her, every route to bring her back, every door to open only for us.
I force a different question.
“What does she need if she leaves?”
Noor’s expression changes by one degree.
“Independent credentials,” she says. “Cash. Identity restoration. Legal support. An exit route not visible to you.”
“Build those too.”
At seven, I prepare a mechanical release packet for the garage, rooftop, and eastern service stair. The locations are printed and sealed beneath Maya’s new ring credentials. I will not receive an alert when she uses them.
That last feature takes the longest to authorize.
The code asks whether root should remain informed of perimeter events.
I select no.
It asks whether unknown departure creates a principal-risk condition.
I remove the condition.
It asks for confirmation.
I confirm.
When I return to the library, Maya is asleep beneath the gray blanket. One hand rests outside it, palm open, scar visible. The sofa is too short. Her injured foot extends beyond the cushion.
I consider moving her.
Instead I place a pillow beneath her ankle without touching skin and take the chair beside the chessboard.
Sunrise finds the house powerless, the city awake, and Maya still present without a lock keeping her there.
Doors must be pushed. Lights require switches. The kitchen faucet drips because no sensor closes it. Sunlight enters at dawn without asking what opacity we prefer.
Maya sleeps in the library while technicians inspect the residence below. She refused my bed and her own room, both too close to the site of last night’s violations. Noor found blankets. I carried a chair beside the sofa and remained there until Maya opened one eye and told me my brooding was loud.
I moved to the other side of the room.
At nine, she wakes with her curls flattened on one side and a bruise darkening beneath the torn shoulder of her sweater.
I have already reviewed the drone specifications. Maximum current below lethal threshold. Risk of cardiac arrhythmia low. Risk is not zero.
“Let me see the burn,” I say.
“Good morning to you too.”
“May I see the burn?”
She sits up and pulls the sweater aside. A red mark branches over her shoulder like lightning.
My hands close around the arms of the chair.
Maya notices. “It hurts less than it looks.”
“That is not useful.”
“It is literally useful.”
Noor enters with a medical kit and a tray of coffee. “You two survived one night without central automation. Civilization remains possible.”
She examines Maya, applies cooling gel, and declares the injury superficial. I do not believe the conclusion until Maya rotates her arm without pain.
Noor then places two ceramic rings on the chessboard.
One is mine, cleaned of blood. The second looks identical except for a fine silver line inside the band.
“A permanent dual-root token,” she says. “Built from Maya’s prototype, without the improvised needle.”
Maya picks it up. “What does permanent mean?”
