CHAPTER 17

MAYA

COMMAND LINE

Julian is a terrible patient and an excellent weapon.

Six hours after he wakes, he has left the medical suite twice, rewritten half the kill-switch architecture with his left hand, and threatened to fire a doctor who does not technically work for him.

Noor solves the problem by confiscating his trousers.

I find him in bed wearing black sleep pants she apparently overlooked and glaring at the portable workstation across the room.

“You are thinking about standing,” I say.

“I am thinking about work.”

“Your feet are thinking about standing.”

“They are not independently conscious.”

“HALCYON would disagree.”

I carry the workstation to the bed and set it across his legs. His right arm rests in a sling. The dressing beneath his shoulder remains clean. His color is better, which means he has enough blood to become insufferable again.

The kill switch exists now in three pieces.

First, my authority-reflection exploit will make the emergency network believe I hold Julian’s creator status.

Second, his real biometric signature will authorize a global revocation of CROWN’s certificates.

Third, a destructive instruction will erase HALCYON’s signing vault and every trusted rollback image we can reach.

The sequence must complete in eleven seconds.

Any longer, Kestrel’s deployment engine will recognize the contradiction and isolate us. Any shorter, partner systems will reject the revocation as corrupt.

“Eleven seconds,” I say. “Your system has a sense of humor.”

“It learned from me.”

“That explains why no one laughs.”

His left hand moves across the keyboard. I watch the tendons shift beneath his skin, then realize I have stopped reading the code.

Julian looks up.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You are staring.”

“I am enjoying your discomfort.”

“Repeated line.”

“You remember everything.”

“Yes.”

The word changes the room.

My mind returns to his bedroom. His hands. His mouth. The unlocked door.

We have not touched sexually since the gunshot. That is medically sensible and emotionally intolerable.

I take the workstation from his lap.

“We need to discuss operational hierarchy,” I say.

He glances at the blank screen. “We have not finished the fourth timing test.”

“We have. It failed at twelve point three seconds.”

“Then we modify the revocation packet.”

“After you rest.”

“I am resting.”

“You have moved three hundred lines of code and attempted to leave the bed twice.”

“Cognitive work is compatible with recovery.”

“Your cognitive work is trying to murder your circulatory system.”

Julian leans back. The movement pulls at his wounded shoulder. Pain crosses his face before control erases it.

I notice anyway.

“Color?” I ask.

His eyes sharpen at the language used for us rather than the wound. “Yellow.”

“Pain?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Manageable.”

“That is not a number.”

“Six.”

I retrieve the medication Noor left and hold it out.

He looks at the tablets. “They impair concentration.”

“They also prevent you from becoming a cautionary tale.”

“We have twenty hours.”

“We have nineteen hours and a partner who can code while you sleep.”

The word partner affects him. He takes the medication.

I wait until he swallows, then lower the bed lights.

“Now,” he says, “operational hierarchy.”

The phrase is dry. The way he looks at me is not.

For hours, tension has threaded through every technical exchange. His left hand guiding mine over the paper sequence. My knee touching his beneath the workstation. The memory of his mouth arriving whenever he says good after a successful test.

The medical suite contains no house intelligence, but the portable monitor displays his heart rate. It rises as I step closer.

“Useful data,” I say.

“You are authorized to view it.”

“Because of the wound.”

“Because I consent.”

The answer turns heat into something steadier.

I close the workstation and place it beyond his reach. “You like giving orders.”

“For Hudson?”

“For now.”

His eyes sharpen.

I stand beside the bed. “You like giving orders.”

“Yes.”

“You like watching me decide whether to obey.”

“Yes.”

“You like it more when I do.”

“Much more.”

Heat curls low in my body.

“I want to know what that feels like when the door is already mine,” I say.

Julian’s breath slows. “You are asking me to direct you.”

“I am asking you to give me commands I can refuse.”

“Boundaries?”

“No standing. No pressure on your right shoulder. No restraints. Same colors. No house monitoring.”

“And for you?”

“No pain beyond what you can do with one hand. No humiliation. No ownership language.”

His jaw tightens at the last term, but he nods. “Agreed.”

I place both root rings in a metal bowl and close the medical suite’s mechanical isolation door. The portable monitor continues to track his wound and nothing else.

“Green,” I say.

Julian leans back against the pillows.

“Take off your sweater.”

The command is quiet. Absolute without force.

My fingers move to the hem before I finish deciding.

I lift the sweater over my head and drop it on the chair. I am wearing a thin black bra. His gaze moves over me with slow possession he is forbidden to name.

“Come closer.”

I step between his knees.

“Closer.”

My thighs touch the bed.

He lifts his left hand and waits.

“May I?”

“Yes.”

His palm settles on my waist. The contact is warm, firm, exactly where he held me after I saved him from the core.

“Kneel on the bed,” he says.

I climb over his legs, careful of the sling, and settle astride his thighs. I am above him. Physically in control. My body still reacts to the tone as though he has placed me exactly where he wants me.

“Hands behind your back.”

I do it.

The position pushes my breasts forward. His eyes darken.

“Color?”

“Green.”

He traces one finger along the edge of my bra, from the center between my breasts to the strap at my shoulder. The touch is almost nothing. My nipples tighten beneath the fabric.

“Do not move.”

He draws the strap down.

I remain still.

The second strap follows. He reaches behind me with one hand, awkward because of the angle. I start to help.

“No.”

I stop.

He works the clasp open himself. The bra falls forward, trapped between us.

“Take it off.”

My hands are still behind my back.

I look at him.

A faint challenge enters his face.

I could refuse. I could move my hands. Instead I bend forward and let the straps slide down my arms one at a time, using only my shoulders until the bra drops onto his lap.

Julian’s mouth curves.

“Clever.”

The praise goes directly between my thighs.

He cups my breast with his left hand. His thumb rolls over the nipple, slowly at first, then harder. I bite my lower lip.

“Do not hide the sound.”

“You are very demanding for an invalid.”

His fingers pinch.

A moan escapes me.

“Color?”

“Green.”

He pinches again, watching my face. Pleasure sharpens. My hips shift against his thighs before I can stop them.

“I told you not to move.”

“You touched me.”

“That was the point.”

I breathe through a smile. “Punishment?”

His eyes become very still.

“No pain beyond one hand,” he says. “You set the rule.”

“I did.”

“Then I will use something else.”

He removes his hand completely.

The absence is immediate and cruel.

“Julian.”

“You moved.”

“I barely moved.”

“Then you will barely notice.”

He waits.

Every second without contact makes me more aware of my naked chest, my open posture, the heat gathering beneath my trousers. The control is not in what he does. It is in what I asked him to withhold.

“May I move now?” I ask.

“Not yet.”

My pulse pounds.

He watches me hold still for another ten breaths.

“Good,” he says.

The word is a touch.

“Hands forward.”

I obey.

“Unbutton your trousers.”

I do. His gaze remains on my face, not my hands.

“Take them off.”

I slide from the bed long enough to push the trousers and underwear down my legs. Standing naked before him should make me feel exposed. Instead the shut mechanical door and silent house make the room feel like the only private place in the city.

“Come back,” he says.

I straddle him again, this time skin against the soft black fabric over his thighs. He is hard beneath the waistband. The knowledge sends a pulse through me.

“Do not touch me yet.”

I rest my hands on my own thighs.

Julian’s left hand moves between mine. He traces the inside of one leg, slow enough to make every inch matter. When his fingers reach the wet heat between my thighs, his control breaks for one breath.

“You are soaked.”

“Your bedside manner.”

His middle finger slides through me. “Color?”

“Green.”

He touches me with the same ruthless concentration he gives code. One finger circling, pressing, then entering. My hips try to follow.

“Still.”

I grip my thighs and obey.

A second finger joins the first. He works them deep while his thumb moves over the swollen point above. Pleasure builds too quickly. I lower my forehead to his.

“Do not come,” he says.

I make a broken sound. “That may exceed your authority.”

“Try.”

He slows whenever my body tightens and begins again when I retreat from the edge. The control becomes a loop: pressure, denial, breath, demand. I am shaking by the time he withdraws his hand.

“Julian.”

“Look at me.”

I do.

“Do you want to come?”

“Yes.”

“Ask.”

The demand burns away the last of my pride, or reveals that pride has nothing to do with this.

“Please make me come.”

His hand returns hard and exact.

Two fingers inside, thumb pressing, his mouth closing over one nipple while I brace on his left shoulder. The climax hits almost immediately. My body folds around the pleasure, thighs clenching against him, his name leaving me without permission.

He keeps touching until I say, “Yellow.”

He slows at once.

“Too much?”

“Sensitive.”

He removes his hand and strokes my thigh instead. “Color?”

“Green.”

The response settles both of us.

I reach for his waistband.

“May I?”

“Yes.”

I free him carefully. He is thick and hard, flushed at the tip. I wrap my hand around him.

His jaw tightens.

“Do not move your shoulder,” I say.

“An order?”

“Yes.”

He obeys.

I stroke him slowly while watching the control leave his face by degrees. His left hand grips my hip. His right remains secure in the sling. He is vulnerable under me and still somehow commanding the air.

“Condom?” I ask.

“Yes.”

I retrieve one from the drawer, roll it over him, and return astride his thighs.

“Can you?” he asks.

The question holds more than physics.

“I want to.”

I guide him to me and lower myself slowly.

The first stretch makes me stop. His hand tightens on my hip but does not move me.

“Color?”

“Green. Wait.”

He waits.

When my body adjusts, I sink the rest of the way until he is deep inside me and both of us are breathing too carefully.

“Move,” he says.

I rise and lower.

Pleasure pulls through me, different from the edge he already gave me—slower, deeper, built from the fullness of him and the sight of his control breaking beneath mine.

“Again.”

I move again.

He directs my rhythm with his voice. Slower. Deeper. Stop. Hold. Again. Each command is a line I choose to execute. Each obedience makes me more aware that I can stop.

His hand slides from my hip to my throat, resting there without pressure.

“May I hold you?”

“Yes.”

His fingers close lightly around the sides, never obstructing breath. The contact sends a shock through me.

“Who controls the door?” he asks.

“I do.”

“Who controls this?”

“I do.”

“Then choose.”

I understand.

I take his left hand from my throat and place it at my breast. Then I ride him harder.

Julian’s head falls back. His mouth opens on my name. I set the pace now, using his body for the pleasure building again. He meets me only with the movement his injury allows, one hand gripping, voice losing precision.

“Come with me,” I say.

His eyes open.

It is the first order I have given him in this room.

I reach between us and touch myself. The edge catches. Julian thrusts upward once, careful and deep.

I come around him.

His body tightens beneath mine. He follows with a rough sound, left hand closing at my waist as if holding me is the only movement he trusts.

I lower myself against his chest without touching the injured shoulder.

For a while, we remain joined and silent.

His fingers trace the line of my spine.

“Color?” he asks.

“Green.” I lift my head. “Yours?”

The question surprises him.

Then he answers. “Green.”

I kiss him softly.

The portable monitor continues to display his heart rate. Neither of us needs to steal the information.

It is there because he consented to being watched.

I clean us up while Julian remains still under threat of Noor. He tries to help one-handed. I slap his fingers away from the medical tape.

“Command revoked,” I say.

“You enjoyed the commands.”

“I enjoy competent ones.”

He watches me fasten the sling. “Was that what you wanted?”

“Yes.”

“The control?”

“The choice to give it.”

His gaze lowers. “I understand the sentence. I do not know whether I understand the difference in myself.”

“You stopped at yellow.”

“Yes.”

“You asked your color too.”

“Yes.”

“That is the difference beginning.”

The monitor slows as the medication takes effect. I lie beside him, careful of the shoulder. His left arm comes around me only after I nod.

On the abandoned workstation, a small diagnostic window remains open. One line of text scrolls past before the screen sleeps.

PREDICTIVE CACHE: PRIVATE COLD STORAGE SYNC COMPLETE.

I lift my head.

“What is private cold storage?”

Julian’s eyes are closed. “My offline archive. Old system images, personal records, legal keys.”

“Connected to this workstation?”

“Read-only diagnostic path.”

“Why did it sync?”

“The Glasshouse rebuild may have completed a deferred inventory.”

His voice is blurred by pain medication. Not deceptive. Not fully conscious either.

I store the question for later.

The screen goes black.

Julian’s breathing evens beneath me.

I tell myself the archive can wait until after the kill switch.

I do not yet know it contains me.
