CHAPTER 27 #2

His focus shifts immediately. “My last screening was three weeks ago. Results negative. No partners since you.”

“Same. I have condoms. I am not using hormonal contraception.”

“Understood.”

“Your shoulder?”

“Cleared for ordinary activity. Not cleared for impact or full load above ninety degrees.”

“Then ordinary is about to receive an unusual definition.”

Heat enters his eyes.

“Any emotional stop conditions?” he asks.

The question is new.

“If I freeze, you stop even if I do not say a color. If either of us starts using sex to avoid the hearing, we stop. If you need reassurance that I will remain afterward, ask directly. Do not command it out of me.”

His throat moves. “Agreed.”

“And yours?”

“If you use leaving as a threat during the scene, I stop. You retain the right to leave. I cannot eroticize it.”

“Agreed.”

Only then do I say, “Yes.”

“Yes.”

His hands settle at my waist.

The contact is familiar enough to hurt and new enough to make me shake. He notices but does not ask the house. The house is not listening.

“Color?”

“Green.”

He kisses me.

Six months disappear and remain at once. His mouth is careful for one breath, then hunger breaks through. I grip his shirt and pull him closer. His hands tighten, not enough to control, enough to tell me he wants to.

I step back.

He releases me immediately.

“Bedroom,” I say.

His eyes darken. “Yours or mine?”

“The room is mine now.”

A pulse moves in his jaw.

I take his hand and lead him west.

The mechanical lock on the primary bedroom responds to my key. Inside, the photograph of Elise stands upright again. The room has changed: softer light, a second chair, books on both nightstands, one absurdly bright blanket Lena sent as a hostile housewarming gift.

The door remains open.

On the dresser, I place my mechanical key, my phone powered off, and a folded card with Noor’s number. Julian watches each item without impatience.

“Independent exit remains available,” I say.

“Yes.”

“I know where the monitor receiver is.”

“Yes.”

“I know the federal guard is two floors below.”

“Yes.”

“This is not because I believe you cannot hurt me.”

His gaze holds mine. “It is because you believe you can stop me.”

“And that you will stop yourself.”

“Yes.”

I place my overnight bag on the chair.

Julian stands near the bed, waiting.

“I want what we had,” I say. “The commands. The control. I want to choose it without wondering whether you calculated the answer.”

“I have no model.”

“I know.”

“No sensors.”

“I know.”

“No locked doors.”

“I know.”

His voice roughens. “Boundaries?”

“Red, yellow, green. No restraints tonight. No marks above the collar. No ownership language except one phrase I approve.”

“What phrase?”

I step closer and speak against his mouth. “My choice.”

His eyes close for half a second.

“Green?” he asks.

“Green.”

He turns me and places my back against the wall.

The movement is fast, controlled, and exactly what I asked for. One hand closes around both my wrists above my head, holding without trapping. His body presses along mine. Heat moves through me so sharply my knees weaken.

“Tell me who came here,” he says.

“I did.”

“Tell me who opened the door.”

“I did.”

“Tell me whose choice this is.”

“Mine.”

“Good.”

His mouth takes mine.

The kiss is demanding now. His free hand moves under my sweater, over my ribs, up to my breast. He cups me through the bra, thumb pressing the sensitive peak until I arch against him.

“Do not move your hands,” he says.

I keep them above my head even after he releases my wrists.

The voluntary obedience makes his breath catch.

He steps back far enough to look at me.

“You are not performing safety for me,” he says.

“No.”

“You do not owe me proof.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because I want to watch you understand the difference.”

His control fractures just enough to show hunger underneath.

“I understand,” he says.

“Show me.”

He removes my sweater and bra without allowing my arms to lower. Cool air touches my skin. His mouth follows, lips closing around one nipple, teeth catching lightly.

A breathless sound slips free.

“Color?”

“Green.”

He bites harder.

I gasp and press my thighs together.

Julian kneels.

The court monitor shows beneath the hem of his trousers, an absurd gray band around his ankle while the most controlled man I know looks up at me from between my legs.

I laugh.

His eyebrow lifts. “Something amusing?”

“Your jewelry.”

He slides my skirt down my hips. “I will make you forget it.”

“That sounds like an unsupported claim.”

He puts his mouth over me through my underwear.

The laugh becomes a moan.

“Hands remain up,” he says.

I brace them against the wall.

He removes the last fabric slowly, then lifts one of my thighs over his shoulder. The position opens me to him. His mouth finds me with no hesitation.

Six months of restraint become precision. He remembers what I like without a database. Tongue broad, then pointed. Pressure building and retreating. One finger entering me, then two, bending exactly where my body tightens.

“Julian.”

“Hands.”

I force them back to the wall.

The command sends me closer.

He keeps me on the edge until my legs tremble. Every time I begin to fall, he slows. Every time I breathe, he begins again.

“Please,” I say.

“Please what?”

“Let me come.”

“Whose choice?”

“Mine.”

“Choose.”

I lower one hand and grip his hair.

“Now.”

He obeys.

The climax hits hard enough that the wall becomes the only stable thing in the room. I cry out, hips moving against his mouth while he holds my thigh and keeps the pressure until I pull him away.

“Yellow,” I gasp.

He stops at once and kisses the inside of my knee.

“Color?”

“Green. Sensitive.”

He rises.

I open his shirt. He lets me, watching. The scars are the same. The healed gunshot adds a new one near his shoulder.

I touch it.

“Pain?”

“No.”

“Liar?”

“Minimal.”

“Yellow for your shoulder.”

He nods.

We undress each other without hurry. When he is naked, I run my hand down his chest and wrap my fingers around him. His control tightens visibly.

“Bed,” he says.

I go.

He follows and turns me onto my stomach, then pauses.

“May I?” His hand rests at my hip.

“Yes.”

He lifts me onto my knees and strokes one palm down my spine. The position feels exposed, dominant, and safe because the door is open behind us and my key is within reach.

A condom package opens.

Julian enters me slowly from behind.

The stretch steals my breath. He stops halfway.

“Color?”

“Green. More.”

He pushes deeper until his body meets mine.

His left hand closes around my hip. His right braces beside my shoulder, protecting the old injury. He begins with controlled thrusts, each one deep and deliberate.

I grip the sheets.

“Tell me,” he says.

“Harder.”

He gives it to me.

The bed moves beneath us. His hand slides up my body and closes at the base of my throat, holding without pressure.

“Whose choice?”

“Mine.”

“Who can stop me?”

“I can.”

“Do you want me to stop?”

“No.”

The final answer breaks his restraint.

He drives into me with the force I remember and the trust we did not have then. Pleasure builds around the full drag of him. I push back, meeting every thrust, taking what I chose and asking with my body for more.

His free hand reaches beneath me and finds the sensitive point already swollen from his mouth.

“Come,” he orders.

I do.

My body clenches around him. He holds me through it, rhythm losing precision until he follows with my name broken against my shoulder.

We collapse onto the bed carefully, his arm around my waist.

He reaches for the blanket, then stops. “May I cover you?”

The question is so ordinary it breaks something open in me.

“Yes.”

He draws the bright, hostile blanket over both of us. I laugh into the pillow.

“Lena selected this?”

“She said the room needed evidence that joy can survive good taste.”

“She remains dangerous.”

“You remain under court order not to retaliate.”

His hand moves slowly along my hip. “Tragic.”

We lie without speaking until our breathing separates from the rhythm of sex.

“Are you staying?” he asks at last.

Not tell me. Not promise. Not stay.

“I brought a bag.”

“That is evidence of preparation, not intent.”

I turn to face him. “Yes. Tonight.”

Relief crosses his face.

“Tomorrow?”

“I decide tomorrow.”

“Understood.”

“And Julian?”

“Yes?”

“I may never live here full time.”

Pain flickers. He lets it remain visible.

“Then we build whatever life you choose elsewhere.”

“Together?”

“If invited.”

I kiss the scar beneath his ribs, then the new one at his shoulder.

“Good answer.”

The open door frames the dark hall.

No lock engages.

No sensor records our breathing.

After a while, Julian says, “Color?”

I turn in his arms and look at the man who once needed a machine to tell him whether I would remain.

“Green.”

Then I close the door by my own hand.

The key stays on my side of the room.

Julian falls asleep before I do, one hand open on the sheet between us.

At three in the morning, a delivery truck backfires in the street. He wakes hard, reaching toward a control panel that no longer exists.

His fingers close on air.

I place my hand in them.

He does not tighten his grip until I do first.

In the morning, I open the door.

Then I make coffee and remain.
