Five
~Devina's POV~
After Sam left, I turned towards Mika and sent him an innocent smile.
"Let me guess, you have questions?" I nodded my head and pulled my legs up to my chest and wrapped my arms around them.
"How do you become a werewolf?"
"You're either born with it, like Zane and most of the other pack members or, you die with alpha blood in your system." My jaw dropped open. If I die anytime soon, I would come back as a werewolf. I tried not to think too much about this, and went on to my next question.
"Wait, so does that mean that changed werewolves are really dead?"
"No. The alpha blood acts like a charge of electricity and starts your heart back up.
It's really hard to purposefully change a werewolf because you have to inject the blood at a specific time and you can only inject a certain amount.
Most alpha's don't know much about it." I slowly chewed on this new information.
Every question I ask relates back to Zane and I can't get that image of his hurt expression out of my mind.
"Do they have, like, special powers?" I felt stupid asking such a question, but I want to know everything I can.
"Not really. They have heightened senses so they can hear even the slightest of sounds, see better in the dark, especially when in full wolf form, but its harder for them to control their emotions and body when in wolf form.
" I closed my eyes and pulled my knees away from my chest. "Now a lot of people get the whole wolf thing wrong.
A werewolf is just that, a half human half wolf.
The stories aren't true where every werewolf has a wolf. It's really just one person. Not two."
"I didn't believe Zane when he told me about the whole werewolf thing so he turned in front of me and lost control.
He pounced on me and started growling and honestly?
It scared the crap out of me." I took a deep breath and dryly laughed.
"I'm scared Mika. Just a few days ago, the only thing I was worried about was getting a good grade on my math test and trying to find a way to stay invisible.
Now I have to fix things with Zane, find out where my mom is, who by the way just tried to kill me a few hours ago and try to figure out what I'm going to do about school because half of the students were just killed by my mate's pack.
And I don't even know what a freaking mate is.
" Mika chuckled and took in a deep breath.
"Devina I've known Zane for a long time now.
Before you, he was ruthless. I'll admit that.
But now that you're here, he's changed and I know for a fact that he would never intentionally hurt you.
He just lost control." When I didn't answer, Mika continued.
"But your mom tried to...?" He trailed off.
I nodded and looked down at my hands. "Well, mate is short for a soulmate.
Every person has one, maybe even two, they just might never meet them.
For werewolves, the "mate pull" is greater than it is for humans.
" I gave him a questioning look and he continued.
"The mate pull is what you feel when you're around Zane.
You feel like telling him everything on your mind even though you might have just met.
When you touch him, you feel sparks and when you aren't around him, that's the only thing you can think about and you want him near you.
" That made sense. My attraction to Zane was because of the mating pull.
"So none of it is true love, it's just some magical pull." I meant to ask it as a question, but it came out more like a statement.
"It's not a magical pull, it's who God destined you to be with. Whoever he picked for you is a perfect match. God doesn't just reach inside of two crystal bowls to pick out a name like in the Hunger Games. So it is true love." I shook my head.
"Have you found your mate yet?" I asked and he shook his head.
"I'm not really the committing type." He laughed and I punched his arm.
"One day you'll find a beautiful woman who will change that."
"For a what, sixteen-year-old?" I nodded in response. "You're pretty wise." He laughed and got up. "Come on you're sleeping in my bed. I'll sleep out here."
"No I'm the guest, I'll sleep on the couch." I pulled my legs up and laid down. Mika sighed and scooped me up and brought me to his room.
"Nope, you're sleeping in here. Goodnight!
" He screamed and ran out of the room. I sighed.
"Wait, here." He came back in and went to his dresser.
Pulling out a really big T-shirt and he looked at it and looked back at me.
"I don't have any pants that would fit you.
..you're too small." He laughed and chucked the shirt at my face.
"Is that alright?" I nodded and picked up the shirt.
"Thank you, Mika." He nodded and walked out of his room, shutting the door behind him. I got off the bed and stripped out of my clothes. The shirt went down to my mid thighs. I jumped back into the bed and soon, I was dead asleep.
"Hey, Devie." I was pinched in the cheek and brought out of my sleep.
I opened my eyes and saw an amused Mika.
"My dad and I are heading off to work, there's breakfast on the counter and your stuff should be here in a few minutes.
" I wanted to ask who is bringing over my stuff, but Mika was already out the door.
I sighed and sat up, then the doorbell rang.
I quickly got up and made my way downstairs.
The doorbell rang again and I grunted and flung the door open.
My breath caught in my throat as I saw a certain brown haired boy standing there.
"I didn't know what to bring so-" Zane started then looked down at my clothes. He grabbed the door and stomped in. "Where is he?" He growled and started looking around the house.
"Who?" I tried to stop him from moving but he just pushed past me.
"Mika!" He yelled and jogged upstairs. "You slept in his bed too!?" He shouted at me once he saw Mika's unmade bed.
"Yeah. What is your problem Zane!?" I stepped in front of him and crossed my arms over my chest.
"This!" He motioned to my clothes and the bedroom. My eyes widened then I took a step back.
"Is that really what you think of me? You think I just sleep around with everyone I see? How many people have you slept with? Huh?" I flung my arms around and yelled.
"That doesn't matter. And no that's not what I think of you, but you smell like him, Devina. You smell like his hands were wrapped around you all night. And dammit look at what you're wearing! You're wearing his shirt!" I narrowed my eyes in anger.
"Because I didn't have any other clothes. Because you just dropped me off here, turned into a wolf, attacked me and left! And he was nice enough to give me his bed while he slept on the couch." He tried to take a step forward but I matched his movements, instead, moving back.
"Look I'm sorry for losing control. You were rejecting me and I freaked out.
It's harder for me to control myself when I'm in wolf form.
Hell, it's hard for me to control myself at all when I'm around you.
" He took another cautious step forward and this time I didn't move back.
Then he took his shirt off and handed it to me.
"If you're going to wear a guys shirt, then wear mine.
" I looked away from the shirt. "Devina please say something. "
"I know what a mate is. I know the whole attraction is just some magical pull. It's not real." Another expression of hurt crossed Zane's beautiful features and he stepped closer to me.
"Is that what Mika told you?" I shook my head and played with the soft fabric of Zane's shirt. "Well, it's not true. God makes the matches but if you're attracted to me, then that's all you." He smirked and my face heated up.
"I never said I was attracted to you!" I defended and threw the shirt at him.
"Yes, you did. But it's okay because I'm attracted to you too." He took another step closer so that our noses were almost touching. "Now either put on your clothes or put my shirt on." I quickly nodded and hurried up the stairs, into Mika's room, with Zane trailing closely behind me.
"I'll just change back into my old clothes." He nodded but stayed in the same position.
"Can I..?" He held his arms open and I practically ran into them.
"God I'm so sorry Devina. I'll never lose control again.
" I nodded my head and laid my head against his chest. I wrapped my arms around his waist and we stayed like that for a few minutes.
"Do you forgive me?" I wasn't quite ready for that yet so I just shrugged.
"I'm sorry. I just I- you really scared me back there. It didn't seem like you anymore." I honestly replied.
"It was me. No one else. Just me. I swear I didn't mean to hurt you." I nodded my head but stayed quiet. "Let's go get your stuff shall we?" I nodded my head and chuckled.
"Wait, what about my mom?" I pulled away from Zane's chest and grabbed my clothes.
"You don't have to worry about her anymore." Zane picked up his shirt and put it on. "She's in the jail down in our pack territory."
"Okay. But I need to um-" I motioned to my clothes and Zane's green orbs widened. He nodded and turned around. "Really? Just leave the room!" I whined and he shook his head.
"I'm not leaving you alone again." He shortly replied and I quickly slid my jeans on.
Just as I peeled my-or Mika's- shirt off, Zane turned around.
"Are you done-" He looked down at my chest and for once in my life, I was thankful that I was wearing a bra.
I quickly looked around for my shirt but couldn't find it.
Great. I froze in place with Mika's shirt in my hand.
"I- um, I thought you were done." He stuttered but didn't turn back around, his eyes were too busy roaming over my body.
He was probably disgusted. I frantically looked around, I would be thankful for anything to cover me up right now.
"I don't know where my sweatshirt is." My face flushed.
"I'll help you look." We locked eyes and he smiled walking closer to me. My heart started racing as he got closer and closer. "Where did you see it last?" He asked as soon as he was just a few inches away from me.
"I-I um I'm n-not sure?" I tried to form a normal sentence but I couldn't with him standing this close to me while being half naked.
"Do I make you nervous?" I bit my lip and shook my head.
"No." He chuckled and looked down at my lips.
"You sure?" I shook my head again.
"No."
"It's right here." I furrowed my brows and watched as the pulled the hoodie out from behind his back.
"Lift your arms up." I widened my eyes and came to my senses.
I grabbed the shirt from his hands and pushed him out of the room.
"What are you doing?" He tried to protest but I shut the door in his face.
What you and I both want. I thought. Covering up.
"I'm not that kind of girl," I shouted and pulled the hoodie over my head. Running over to the bedside table, I picked up my phone and shoved it in my back pocket.
"I know. I didn't," Zane paused, trying the figure out his next words then continued. "I didn't mean it like that. I know you aren't like that. I'm sorry." I opened the door and pushed past him.
"Let's just go. I want to see Mr. Freddles." Zane grabbed my arm and gently pulled me back.
"Hey what's wrong?" I wiggled out of his grasp and hurried outside.
~Zane's POV~
I followed Devina outside and to my new car. The way she reacted when I saw her half naked made me believe that she didn't want me to see her like that at all. She stopped walking as she realized what kind of car it is. An Audi R8. In blue. She scoffed and stomped over to me.
"You think you can just buy me!?" She yelled and pushed at my chest. "Huh!?" Her sudden mood changes were really giving me whiplash. One minute we were laughing and smiling and the next she's yelling.
"What's your problem!?" I matched her voice and sprawled my arms up before dropping them back at my sides.
"What's my problem? My problem is that just a few days ago you showed up in my life and changed everything.
My problem is that you act like a possessive boyfriend.
My problem is that my mom just tried to kill me and I have to go back there.
" She stopped pushing me and I could tell she was fighting back her tears.
I never once stopped to think about how all this might be affecting her.
"I'm so confused Zane. My head is all fogged up," She pulled at her hair but I held her hands to stop her from hurting herself.
"I don't know what to think anymore." Then I pulled her into my chest and rested my chin on her head.
"I know. Shh. She's never going to hurt you again.
No one's ever going to hurt you. I can't imagine how hard and confusing everything must be for you but I do know that you're the best thing that has ever happened to me and I will do anything to make you feel better.
" I felt her smile against my chest and she pulled away.
"Even letting me drive your car?" She gave me a dazzling smile and I nodded, throwing her the keys.
"You have your licenses right?" She stopped walking and shyly turned around. Shit.
"No. My mom never signed me up for drivers ed." I clenched my fist and took a deep breath. What else had her mom done to her?
"As soon as we get to the pack house I'm signing you up." I simply replied and got into the passenger side of the car.
"The pack house? I thought we were going back to my house?" She followed me into the car and started it up.
"We are. But you're not staying here. That was just temporary." She frowned and shook her head.
"No. I want to stay there." With Mika. I couldn't help but feel hurt that she'd choose Mika over me, her mate. "I like staying with them, Zane. Please." I nodded my head and looked out the window.
"If you feel safe and happy there then you can stay, but you have to keep in contact with me, okay?" She nodded and pulled out of Sam's driveway.
Once we got to her house, she stopped the car and just looked up at it. I had a few people clean up the broken glass from the window and replace it but the memories couldn't be as easily wiped away.
"You don't have to do this you know." I reminded her and she just shook her head.
"Yeah, I do." And with that, she got out of the car and walked inside. "Do we have boxes?" She asked and I nodded my head. "Do I get to take everything or just the stuff in my room? I mean how does this work?" She grabbed a box from the garage and I did the same.
"I think you can just take whatever you want. But if you need to buy anything, money isn't a problem within our pack."
"I'm not taking your money." She shortly replied which got on my nerves. I want to provide for her, I want to spoil her with cars and expensive restaurants. I want to see her smile when I gift her something new. I want the best for her.
"Well, technically it would be our money," I muttered and followed her back into the house. "Do you want anything in here?" She shook her head as I motioned towards the kitchen. Then she thought of something and ran upstairs to her room.
"Mr. Freddles!" She screamed and opened her door.
Her fish was turning in circles like he was happy to see her.
The fuck? It kinda hurt that she likes a fish more than me.
"Hey, buddy. How are you?" She opened a little container of fish food and fed him a few.
"Don't worry I won't leave without you again.
" She set the box down on her bed and began filling it with tons of books from her bookshelves.
"Do you like to read a lot?" I asked as I helped her safely put the books in the boxes.
"Yeah." She smiled, with passion leaking out. "I do."
After we were done with the bookshelves, we moved onto the dresser. I opened the top drawer and immediately blushed. She had lace bras and plain underwear neatly folded inside along with socks.
"I can um do that drawer if you want." She spoke as she saw which drawer I was working on.
"No it's fine I don't mind." Her cheeks reddened but she didn't stop me.
When we finished packing her room, we had over twenty boxes of stuff.
"I called a moving truck to come and get the boxes.
" She nodded her head and looked around the now plain room.
The only thing left were scratches on the hardwood floor and holes in the wall from various wall art.
"You know pretty much everyone from the pack lives in the pack house, you could too.
Or I could get you a house to live in. You could have a roommate to keep you company, or you could, you know, live with me.
" I looked down at my hands and played with my fingers.
"Honestly, I don't know what I want to do anymore. All I know is that I do want to go back to school as soon as possible." I nodded my head and looked back up to her.
"There's a really good high school in the pack city. But you'd have to live near it." She thought about this and nodded. I tried not to get my hopes up about her moving in with me but it was useless, my heart was racing.
"Is everyone a..." She trailed off and I slightly nodded my head.
"Almost. I could go back with you if you want. I wouldn't mind brushing up on my geometry." I laughed and she did the same.
"You don't have to go back to high school just for me."
"I know I don't have to but who else would tell those hormonal teenage boys to stay away from you?
" She stopped laughing and slowly looked towards me.
I set the box down that I was holding and took another step closer to her.
"Wouldn't want them trying to make a move," I whispered as our faces were just inches apart.
"Like you're trying to do now?" She arched a brow and I smirked.
"I'm not trying. I am." She pulled away before I could catch her lips with mine and smirked.
"No, you tried." She then picked up an empty box and walked to the bathroom across the hall. "And you failed!" She laughed over her shoulder as I followed her into the bathroom.
"Don't worry. I'll keep trying." She giggled and started putting makeup and other feminine products in the box.
"I'll do it." She said which caused me to furrow my brows.
"Do what?"
"I'll move to the pack city. Or whatever it's called." I grinned and stopped myself from jumping up and down with excitement. Damn, I was turning into such a girl.
"Where at? With me or..." I tried to nonchalantly ask but she just giggled.
"With," She started and trailed off, trying to tease me. Game on Devina.
"I mean I don't think my girlfriend would mind if you moved in with us..." She widened her eyes and I could hear her heartbeat quicken.
"I was thinking about moving in with my boyfriend." My heart dropped and so did my smirk. Boyfriend? Then Why is she flirting with me? I thought. She was flirting with me, right? I started to panic.
"No. Hell no. That's not happening." I don't like the idea of her living with her boyfriend. Or having a boyfriend for that matter.
"If you live with your girlfriend I can live with my boyfriend." She calmly stated and sealed up the box she was working on.
"I don't have a girlfriend. I was kidding." She smiled to herself and handed me the box.
"So was I." She whispered before leaving the bathroom and jogging down the stairs. I followed after her and put the box down in the living room.
"About the boyfriend or living with him?" I continued and she just rolled her eyes.
"Why do you care? It's not like we're going to be anything." I growled at her and she jumped.
"We are something, Devina." She took a step back, not sure what was going to happen. "You're my mate. Mine." Her face hardened and she took a step forward.
"I'm not anyone's property you can't just claim me!" She yelled.
"Yes, I can. I can claim anything I want." She took another step closer and smacked me.
"Not me. You may be used to girls throwing themselves at you and begging you to call them yours but that's not me. I've basically lived my whole life alone, with the exception of Mr. Freddles so I don't need you. I don't need anyone." She tried to walk past me but I grabbed her arm.
"What if I told you that I need you?"
"Then I'd tell you that I don't believe you. You don't need me. You need someone else. Someone stronger." I tightened my grip on her wrist and lowered my head so that I was looking straight into her crystal blue eyes.
"Don't ever say that again. You are strong. You are the strongest girl I've ever met." She shook her head and tried to free her arm. "Why do you think that? Why do you always think you aren't good enough?" I yelled but this didn't change her mind, I could tell.
"Let go, Zane!" She matched my tone and tried to get free again. I shook my head.
"I won't let go. Ever."
