Thirty Nine

~Devina's POV~

I riddled off my address then hung up. I can't believe this is happening.

After months of wondering why he did what he did, I finally talked to him.

I talked to the boy I had once loved so much.

And still do. I slid down to the floor clutching Dylan's phone in my hand.

Things were finally getting better then he swoops in and stirs everything up.

I wanted to punch him. I wanted to push him down and kick him.

But I also wanted to see his muscular body again.

I wanted to look into his green eyes and forgive him.

I had forgiven my mother, could I do the same for Zane?

My biological mother never cheated on me though.

"Devin? Hey, what's wrong?" Oliver rushed over to me and wrapped his strong arms around my shoulders.

Oliver wasn't just my friend, we had decided to be more than that a few months ago.

Believe it or not, he's a vampire. When I first found out, I was mad at myself for getting involved with the supernatural world again but Oliver is so friendly.

"It's Zane," I whispered as I looked down at the phone. Oliver froze and pulled back.

"You said that was over. That he wasn't in your life anymore."

"He wasn't," I assured him but he still stayed a few feet away.

"Then what is he doing, wedging himself back into your life now? He cheated on you, Devin. Right in front of you." I closed my eyes and let my head fall down.

"I didn't forget. I probably won't ever forget. You don't need to remind me." I stood up and moved closer to Oliver.

"Then why are you thinking about forgiving him?

I can see it in your eyes." He tapped right under my blue eyes and I sighed.

Oliver doesn't know that Zane's my mate.

He only knows that he's a werewolf and that he was my boyfriend.

"Devin, I know you believe that there's good in everyone and I love that about you, but sometimes you can't just let people back in.

If he was able to hurt you so easily, then what's saying he won't do it again?

" He softly asked, pushing a stray lock of blonde hair back behind my ear.

"I don't know what's going to happen Oli." I sighed and bumped into his chest. He was quick to respond, putting his arms around my waist and kissing my head.

"I'll give you a pass for calling me that because you have a lot going on right now." He grumbled making me giggle.

"Hey remember our deal?" I joked, making him shake his head in shame.

~Flashback~

"Just let me call you Oli. It's cute." I giggled.

"Only on one occasion though." I tilted back and arched a brow.

"I'm not taking my shirt off for you." Oliver laughed and shook his head.

"Be my girlfriend." I pulled back even further and stared at him.

"Like, your girlfriend or your girlfriend?" I quizzed he tilted his head back, and laughed again.

"Like I'll take you on dates and cuddle you and kiss you. That kind of girlfriend. And I'll be your boyfriend." I tilted my head and pretended to think about it.

"Only if," He raised a perfectly shaped eyebrow and nodded for me to continue. "I can call you Oli." His brown eyes squinted. "Without you getting mad." I quickly added.

"Fine. But only when it's just me and you, okay? I can't have people thinking I'm weak." I giggled and nodded.

"Deal." I stuck out my hand for him to shake and he frowned.

"You want me to shake your hand because you agreed to be my girlfriend? If I let you call me that?" I nodded and inched my hand out further. "I'm not shaking our hand." He refused. "You're going to kiss me instead." I froze and looked up into his light brown eyes.

"Not yet okay? Let's just take things slow. There's no rush." Oliver nodded and stepped away from me a little.

"Okay. We only have forever." He smiled and winked making my heart twist for a different reason. Forever is a long time, especially to spend with someone. The only person I ever saw myself being with forever was Zane.

"For now, let's go finish our movie." Oliver nodded and interlaced his hand with mine leading us downstairs.

~Zane's POV~

On the way to L.A to see my girl again, I had a few of my men track her and Dylan down.

Dylan wasn't living with Devina and her adoptive mom, he lived by himself in an apartment a few miles away.

After what felt like a thousand years, the plane finally landed and I sped over to Devina's house.

Once I pulled up on the side of her street, there were butterflies in my chest. I got out of the car and walked up to the door.

After three knocks, some guy answered it.

"Can I help you?" I squinted my eyes and tried to look behind him but he blocked the view with his body. He wasn't unattractive, he had floppy dark blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes but he was a little scrawny.

"I'm looking for Devina." The boy froze and looked up into my eyes. Then it hit me. He's a vampire. Blood boiled in my veins as I smelled Devina all over him.

"Baby," He called over his shoulder. "There's some guy here for you.

" Some guy. I rolled my eyes and kept myself from punching the hell out of this dude.

After a few seconds, a small hand came around the guy's waist and pulled the door open further.

And there she stood. Looking even more beautiful than ever.

Her blonde hair had gotten even longer, probably down to her ass now.

Her eyes were the same though, bright blue.

She was a little bit more dressed up than usual, with a long, light purple dress and beautiful makeup.

"Babe who's this?" The guy asked and pulled her thin body even closer.

My eyes narrowed in on her waist. She looked way thinner than she did the last time I saw her.

Then I looked at his hands all over her and lunged for the guy.

Throwing punches left and right, the only thing I could think about is how he had touched what was mine. What else had they done?

"Stop!" A familiar voice screamed. I froze and stood up, analyzing her tear stained face.

"Who the hell do you think you are, man!?" The guy yelled at my face, trying to pull me away from Devina but I firmly stayed planted.

"Oli." Devina warned, standing her ground.

"You want to know who I am?" I asked, taking a sly stepped closer to Devina. "I'm Devina's mate." Oliver froze and looked over at Devina.

"I-I was going to tell you." Devina started. "I didn't want you to think I was on the rebound or something. I didn't want to lose you." Oliver stepped away from both of us and looked up.

"You weren't going to tell me. I should go though, let you guys-" He looked over at me and rolled his eyes. "Catch up."

"Oli please," She reached for his arm but he pulled it back and walked away. Once he was gone Devina turned towards me and smacked me.

"I deserved that." I clenched my jaw and spoke.

"I deserve everything you give me. I definitely don't deserve you.

But I'm selfish. I don't care." Devina grabbed my arm and pulled us towards my car, next to all the other cars, it looked pretty nice.

It was just a Corvette though. She hopped into the driver's seat and started the car.

She must have passed drivers education. Last year, I tried signing her up, but she refused.

What else had I missed? Once I got in she sped off and left me in silence to think.

I wanted to know everything I missed. Is she happy now?

I know the mate bond is different for humans, but is it possible to just move on like that?

Move on with a bloodsucking idiot?

So many questions were flooding my mind.

Had they gone farther than just kissing?

Did he do things to her that only I should?

After a few minutes of driving, we arrived at the beach and she lead us towards the water.

Sitting down on the sand, just far enough away from the water so we wouldn't get wet, she pulled her knees up to her chest and rested her head on top.

I sat down next to her and softly smiled. She's so beautiful.

"Explain." And that's what I did. I explained when April and I met. I explained what it felt like when she came back, how I wasn't in control. I explained everything. "Zane, I-You didn't fight for me. You didn't protest." I ran my hands through my hair and sighed.

"I did fight for you. I fought for you, but not enough. You mean the world to me. As soon as I snapped out of it, I killed April then called Dylan to find you. I knew you'd go to him." She tilted her head so she was looking at me.

"It doesn't help that you just up and killed her either, Zane." I sighed, knowing she's right.

"Devina," She shook her head.

"It's Devin." I took a deep breath.

"Devina," She rolled her eyes and looked away.

"It's been a year. A fucking year since I last saw you and I miss you.

I miss kissing you and talking to you. I miss your eyes and how much they sparkle when you're happy.

I'm sorry I didn't fight for you as much as I should have but I'm fighting for you now.

I love you. So much. You don't have to say anything back.

" She turned her head back towards me and frowned.

"Why haven't you rejected me yet? I thought you were going to reject me."

"Reject you?" It wasn't ever even an idea.

"No. You're mine. You're my mate. Not anyone else's.

I'm not letting you go." A tear escaped her cheek but I stopped it from traveling any further with my rough thumb.

I slowly started to lean in as she picked her head up.

We were inches apart before she pulled back.

"I-I can't. Oliver's my boyfriend. I can't cheat on him." I clenched my jaw and looked at the sea. I was livid.

"You never officially broke up with me until today. You were dating him while we were still dating?" Devina flinched back and furrowed her perfect eyebrows.

"You cheated on me, Zane! You were with that witch for a year!" I closed my eyes.

"I know. I know. I'm sorry. I just need to get used to all this.

"I got into USC." She softly spoke after a few minutes of comfortable silence.

"Dylan told me. Congratulations." I grinned. "I'm proud of you."

"I also got adopted by Gwen. She's amazing she got me a car last Wednesday. She's not rich, you know, but she always finds money to spend on me in some way. She's a wonderful woman. I wish one day I'll be like her."

"You're amazing too. You're beautiful." I tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ears and for once she didn't push me away.

"She got me a beta fish too." She laughed and leaned into my touch. "His names Tank." I grinned as she talked about her life. It sounded perfect.

"You- you look thin." I finally spoke. Her shoulders tensed as if the words froze her whole entire body. "You've been eating right? You're healthy?"

"I-" She paused, trying to find the right words to say. "I've been pretty busy lately. With school and colleges and everything like that. And with my job too. A lot of stress." She spoke, not entirely telling me she had been eating and not saying that she hasn't.

"Devina you have to eat." She looked away.

"You know April came to visit me a few months after I-I left.

" Now it was my turn to be tense. "She basically told me I wasn't ever going to be good enough for you.

She's right. I'm just a boring human. I'm not special.

That's why you should just reject me right now.

" She turned towards me and stood up. I frowned and I stood up too.

"I'm not going-" She stopped me and shook her head.

"Just do it, Zane!" She screamed, probably thankful for the lack of people on this beach right now.

"No! No. Because I love you, Devina. I can't imagine even living without you."

"I hate you! I hate you, Zane!" She sobbed while weakly punching my chest. "I hate you so much." She cried as I pulled her into my chest. If this is all I could ever get, I'd be happy with it.
