Chapter 2- The Alpha's Protection
The clearing fell into a silence so thick Emily could almost feel it pressing against her skin.
Every wolf present had heard the woman's voice. Every wolf now waited to see how Alpha Jay Carter would respond.
Emily's heart was still racing from the shock of the mate bond snapping into place, but now another emotion crept into her chest-fear.
Not fear of Jay.
Fear of what his claim meant.
Across the clearing, wolves shifted uneasily. Some avoided looking directly at Jay. Others stared openly at Emily, curiosity burning in their eyes. The whispers had already started spreading like wildfire.
The Alpha found his mate.
But who is she?
That girl?
Emily wished the ground would open and swallow her.
Jay, however, did not look embarrassed.
He looked furious.
Slowly, he turned his head toward the woman who had spoken.
The firelight revealed her clearly now.
Tall. Blonde. Beautiful in a sharp, intimidating way. Her arms were crossed over her chest, and the smirk on her lips made it clear she had no intention of apologizing.
Serena.
Emily did not know her personally, but she could instantly recognize the type. Every pack had wolves like Serena-confident, ambitious, and used to being admired.
And judging by the tension around them, Serena had clearly expected something from Jay.
Something Emily had just ruined.
Jay released Emily's hand slowly, though the bond between them still pulsed warmly through her chest. He stepped forward, his movements calm and controlled, but there was something dangerous in the way the muscles in his shoulders tightened.
"Repeat what you just said," Jay told her.
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
The kind of quiet that made the strongest warriors in the clearing instinctively take a step back.
Serena's smirk faltered slightly, but she recovered quickly.
"I just said what everyone else here is thinking," she replied. "That girl is your mate?"
Her gaze swept over Emily in a way that made her skin crawl.
"She barely looks like she belongs in a pack meeting."
A ripple of tension moved through the crowd.
Emily's cheeks burned. She stared at the ground, wishing desperately that she could disappear. This was exactly why she hated being noticed.
But before Serena could continue, a deep growl rolled across the clearing.
Jay.
The sound vibrated through Emily's chest like thunder.
Every wolf froze instantly.
Jay stepped closer to Serena, his golden eyes blazing with warning.
"You will watch how you speak about my mate," he said.
The words were simple.
But the possessiveness in his tone made Emily's heart skip.
My mate.
The phrase echoed in her mind again and again.
Serena scoffed lightly. "Your mate?" she repeated. "You barely even know her."
Jay's gaze darkened.
"I know enough."
Serena tilted her head slightly, studying Emily again with thinly veiled disgust.
"She's weak."
That word snapped something inside Jay.
The growl that left him this time was louder. More feral.
Several wolves near them instinctively backed away.
"Careful," Jay warned.
Serena raised an eyebrow.
"Or what?"
For a moment, Emily thought Jay might actually attack her.
His wolf was clearly very close to the surface. His eyes glowed brighter, and the air around him seemed charged with energy.
But then Jay did something unexpected.
He turned away from Serena entirely.
And walked straight back to Emily.
The movement was so sudden that it took everyone by surprise.
Emily looked up just as he reached her.
Up close, his expression had softened again.
Not completely.
But enough that the terrifying Alpha from seconds ago seemed like a different person.
"Come with me," he said quietly.
Emily blinked.
"What?"
Jay offered his hand again.
"I want to talk somewhere quieter."
The entire clearing watched them.
Emily's nerves screamed at her to refuse.
This was too much attention.
Too many eyes.
Too many expectations.
But the bond between them tugged gently at her chest, warm and steady.
Her wolf nudged forward.
Mate.
Emily hesitated only a moment before placing her hand in his again.
Jay's fingers closed around hers.
The contact sent another pulse of warmth through her body.
And then he led her away from the fire.
Behind them, the clearing exploded with whispers.
The forest was quieter away from the gathering.
Moonlight filtered through the tall pines, painting the ground in silver patterns. The cool night air brushed against Emily's skin, helping calm the storm of emotions racing inside her.
Jay didn't speak immediately.
He walked slowly, guiding her along a narrow path that led toward the edge of the territory. After a few minutes, they reached a small clearing overlooking a river.
The water glimmered under the moonlight.
Only then did he stop.
Emily released a shaky breath.
"That was... intense," she said softly.
Jay huffed out a quiet laugh.
"That's one way to describe it."
For a moment neither of them spoke.
Emily stared at the river, trying to organize the chaotic thoughts in her mind.
Finally she said, "You didn't have to defend me like that."
Jay turned toward her.
His expression shifted instantly.
"Didn't have to?"
Emily shrugged awkwardly.
"I'm used to comments like that."
Jay went very still.
Something dangerous flickered in his eyes again.
"From who?"
Emily immediately regretted saying anything.
"No one important."
Jay stepped closer.
The movement made her heart start racing again.
"Emily."
His voice was gentle, but there was an edge of command beneath it.
"Who?"
She looked down.
"Some wolves in Moonfall," she admitted quietly. "They think I'm... too quiet. Too weak."
Jay's jaw tightened.
"You're not weak."
Emily gave a small, nervous laugh.
"You just met me."
"I don't need years to recognize strength."
Emily looked up at him.
His golden eyes held hers with unwavering certainty.
"The bond doesn't lie," Jay continued. "My wolf chose you for a reason."
Her chest warmed at his words.
No one had ever spoken about her like that before.
Jay took another step closer.
Now they were standing only inches apart.
Emily could feel the heat of his body. The steady rhythm of his breathing. The faint scent of pine and smoke that clung to his clothes.
Her wolf purred softly inside her chest.
"You're shaking," Jay murmured.
Emily swallowed.
"That tends to happen when a powerful Alpha suddenly claims me in front of fifty wolves."
Jay's lips twitched.
"You're not just any wolf."
He reached up slowly and brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
The gentle touch made her breath hitch.
"You're my mate."
The words were softer this time.
More intimate.
Emily's heart pounded so loudly she was certain he could hear it.
"Does that scare you?" Jay asked quietly.
She hesitated.
"Maybe a little."
Jay nodded.
"That's fair."
Emily studied him carefully.
"You're surprisingly calm about all of this."
Jay gave a short laugh.
"Trust me. My wolf is not calm."
Emily's lips curved into a small smile.
"I think I noticed."
Jay looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said something that made her heart skip again.
"You don't have to be afraid here."
Emily tilted her head.
"Why not?"
Jay's voice dropped lower.
"Because anyone who hurts you answers to me."
The promise in his tone was absolute.
Emily felt something shift inside her chest.
For the first time in years...
She felt safe.
But neither of them noticed the pair of glowing eyes watching from the tree line.
Serena had followed them.
And the anger burning in her chest was only just beginning.
