Chapter 6- The Alpha's Claim
The entire camp changed in seconds.
Emily felt it like a shockwave.
One moment Blackridge had been moving through its evening routines-wolves gathering for dinner, warriors returning from patrol, laughter drifting from the main hall. The next, everything shifted into sharp, controlled motion.
Boots hit the ground.
Voices lowered.
Every wolf nearby straightened as if pulled by the same invisible thread.
Warriors appeared from every direction, some already halfway through shifting their focus from casual conversation to full alert. The training grounds emptied. Patrol runners moved toward the Alpha instinctively.
And through it all, Jay stood perfectly still.
Emily had seen him calm before.
She had seen him dangerous.
But this was something else entirely.
This was Alpha Jay Carter.
The warmth that had softened his face only minutes earlier vanished beneath cold authority. His posture changed in a subtle but unmistakable way, shoulders squaring as every instinct inside him sharpened toward the threat.
The warrior who had run from the northern border bent slightly, catching his breath.
"Alpha," he repeated. "We picked up Bloodfang scent along the outer ridge."
A low ripple moved through the wolves nearby.
Emily didn't know much about Bloodfang yet, but the reaction alone told her enough.
This wasn't a small problem.
Jay's voice came out steady.
"How many?"
"Three confirmed. Maybe more beyond the ridge."
Jay nodded once, already thinking several steps ahead. "Did they cross?"
"No."
"Did they challenge?"
The warrior hesitated. "No... but they didn't hide either."
Emily saw the moment the answer clicked in Jay's mind.
"They want to be noticed," he said quietly.
The runner nodded grimly.
Jay turned toward the nearest group of warriors. "Get the northern patrol ready. Rotate fresh runners along the east line. I want eyes on every border path."
The commands rolled out of him effortlessly.
Within seconds, wolves were moving again-this time with purpose.
Emily stood frozen near the washbasin, trying to absorb the sudden change in atmosphere.
The bond between her and Jay pulsed sharply now, reacting to his focus, his tension, the faint edge of aggression beneath his calm.
Her wolf stirred in response.
Not fearfully.
Alert.
Jay turned back toward her.
For a split second the Alpha disappeared again, replaced by the man who had been speaking softly to her only moments ago.
"Inside," he said.
Emily shook her head automatically.
"No."
Jay's brow furrowed.
"This isn't a discussion."
"I know," she said quietly, "but I'm not hiding in a cabin while everyone else prepares."
His eyes searched her face.
The bond hummed between them, a strange blend of concern and reluctant admiration.
"You don't even know what Bloodfang is capable of," he said.
"That's exactly why I should learn."
Jay studied her for a long moment.
Behind him, wolves were already gathering near the northern path, preparing for patrol.
Finally, he exhaled.
"You stay with me," he said.
Emily blinked. "That wasn't the compromise I expected."
"It wasn't a compromise."
Despite the tension filling the camp, Emily almost smiled.
Within minutes, the center of Blackridge Territory had transformed into something closer to a war council.
The main clearing filled with warriors, betas, scouts, and elders. Torches were lit along the edges of the space as the sun dipped lower behind the trees, turning the forest dark and shadowed.
Emily stood near the edge at first, unsure where she belonged in the sudden rush of strategy and preparation.
Jay stood near the center.
Even surrounded by dozens of wolves, it was obvious who the Alpha was. Every voice quieted when he spoke. Every question came to him first. His presence seemed to anchor the entire pack.
Emily watched the shift in him with quiet fascination.
Earlier, she had seen glimpses of this side of him-the commanding Alpha beneath the calm exterior-but now it was fully visible.
He wasn't just powerful.
He was trusted.
That realization settled into her chest in a way she hadn't expected.
"Emily."
She turned.
Owen was approaching from the edge of the clearing, Liam right behind him.
"What happened?" Owen asked.
"Bloodfang near the border," Emily said.
Liam's expression darkened immediately.
"That's not good."
"No," Emily agreed softly.
Before either brother could ask more questions, a ripple moved through the crowd.
Jay had stepped onto the large stone platform at the center of the clearing.
Every wolf turned toward him.
Emily felt the shift instantly.
The moment an Alpha addressed their pack.
Jay's gaze swept across the gathered wolves.
"Bloodfang scouts have been seen near our northern ridge," he said.
His voice carried easily through the clearing.
"They have not crossed into our territory."
A murmur moved through the pack.
Jay raised one hand slightly.
Silence returned instantly.
"That does not mean they won't."
Emily noticed how calm he sounded.
Not dismissive.
Not afraid.
Just... certain.
"We will not provoke a fight tonight," Jay continued. "But we will not ignore their presence either."
He gestured toward several warriors.
"Patrol rotations double along the north and east lines. No one moves beyond the main territory without reporting to a Beta first."
The wolves nodded.
Orders accepted.
Emily felt a strange warmth in her chest watching the exchange.
The pack trusted him completely.
Then Jay said something that made the entire clearing go silent.
"There is something else you need to understand."
His gaze shifted.
Directly to Emily.
Every wolf followed it.
Emily froze.
Oh no.
Jay stepped down from the platform.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
The crowd parted as he walked toward her.
Emily felt her heartbeat climbing rapidly with each step he took.
What is he doing?
He stopped directly in front of her.
The entire clearing watched.
Jay turned to face the pack again.
"This woman," he said, placing a steady hand on Emily's shoulder, "is my mate."
The words rang through the clearing like a declaration.
No one spoke.
But Emily could feel dozens of eyes on her.
Some curious.
Some cautious.
Some openly skeptical.
Jay continued.
"And because I know how wolves talk..."
A faint edge entered his voice.
"...let me make something clear."
The air felt electric now.
Emily's wolf stirred restlessly in her chest.
Jay's hand remained steady on her shoulder.
"She is not temporary."
Several wolves straightened.
"She is not fragile."
Emily felt heat rush to her cheeks.
"And she is not someone you question simply because she arrived yesterday."
His gaze swept the clearing.
Stopping briefly-very deliberately-on Serena.
"If anyone in this pack has a problem with my mate..."
His voice dropped lower.
"...you bring that problem to me."
The message landed like a hammer.
No one spoke.
No one moved.
Emily felt the moment the pack understood exactly what Jay had done.
This wasn't just a protective gesture.
It was a claim.
Not the physical kind wolves sometimes spoke about in hushed tones.
A public one.
A leadership one.
Jay had just tied her place in Blackridge directly to his authority.
Emily's pulse thundered.
The bond between them flared warmly.
Then something unexpected happened.
One of the older warriors stepped forward.
Gray-haired. Scarred. Clearly someone who had been part of Blackridge long before Jay became Alpha.
He bowed his head slightly.
"Welcome to Blackridge, Luna."
The word echoed through the clearing.
Emily froze.
Then another wolf nodded.
And another.
Not everyone.
Some wolves remained stiff and silent.
Serena's face was like carved ice.
But the shift had begun.
Emily looked up at Jay.
"You didn't warn me," she whispered.
His lips moved slightly near her ear.
"You looked like you were about to run."
"I still might."
"That's fine," he murmured. "Just don't run far."
Despite everything, Emily laughed softly.
But the moment didn't last.
Another runner burst into the clearing.
This one looked worse.
Sweat covered his face.
"Alpha," he said breathlessly.
Jay turned instantly.
"They crossed the ridge."
The entire clearing went silent.
"How many?" Jay asked.
The warrior swallowed.
"Five... maybe six."
Emily felt the shift in Jay immediately.
The warmth vanished.
The Alpha returned.
Jay's voice turned razor sharp.
"Warriors with me."
Wolves began moving instantly.
Weapons grabbed.
Patrols forming.
The tension in the air became something darker now.
Real danger.
Jay turned back to Emily.
For a second, the Alpha disappeared again.
"You stay in the main hall," he said.
Emily shook her head.
"Jay-"
"No."
The single word carried Alpha command.
Her wolf responded instantly.
But Emily held his gaze anyway.
"You said I'm not fragile."
Jay's jaw tightened.
"This isn't the same thing."
Emily stepped closer.
"I'm not asking to fight."
"Good."
"I'm asking not to be treated like a liability."
Silence stretched between them.
The bond pulsed harder.
Finally, Jay exhaled slowly.
"You stay with the Betas," he said.
Emily blinked.
"That was easier than I expected."
Jay's eyes darkened slightly.
"It's not easy."
Then he leaned closer, voice dropping low enough that only she could hear.
"If Bloodfang came this close the same day my mate appears..."
Emily felt a chill run down her spine.
"They may not be here for the territory," Jay finished.
Her wolf stirred sharply.
Because suddenly...
Emily had the terrifying feeling that Bloodfang might already know about her.
And that made her far more dangerous to this pack than Serena ever could.
