Chapter 13- The Night They Came

The doors to the main hall slammed shut with a thunderous boom.

For half a second, the entire building seemed to hold its breath.

Then everything exploded into motion.

Warriors rushed across the hall, boots pounding against the wooden floor as Rowan barked orders from the center of the room.

Several wolves moved instantly to brace the doors with thick iron bars built into the frame for exactly this kind of emergency.

Others ran toward the windows along the side walls, peering out through the narrow openings that overlooked the torchlit clearing.

Outside, horns continued to echo across the territory.

Emily stood frozen near the center of the hall.

Her pulse hammered so loudly in her ears that she could barely hear the voices around her.

They're here.

Bloodfang.

Jay had expected them eventually.

But not tonight.

Not this fast.

Jay released her wrist only long enough to turn toward Rowan.

"Report."

The Beta moved quickly across the hall, his expression grim.

"Multiple scents along the tree line," Rowan said. "Scouts say at least eight. Possibly more hiding beyond the outer ridge."

Jay's eyes hardened.

"They're probing."

"Looks that way."

Emily's wolf surged again, restless and sharp beneath her skin. Every instinct inside her was screaming that the danger outside those walls was real.

Close.

Closer than it had ever been.

Jay turned toward the nearest window.

For a moment he simply stood there, scanning the darkness beyond the clearing.

Emily followed his gaze.

Blackridge's central courtyard lay under a scattering of torches, their flames flickering in the growing wind. Beyond them stretched the thick forest that bordered the territory.

And somewhere inside those trees...

Bloodfang wolves were watching.

Hunting.

Waiting.

"They're not rushing the gates," Rowan said.

"No," Jay agreed quietly.

Emily felt the realization drop into her chest.

"They're waiting for me."

Jay didn't respond.

But the silence said enough.

Across the hall, several Blackridge warriors were already shifting partially-eyes glowing, claws extending, wolves pressing close to the surface in preparation for a fight.

Emily forced herself to breathe.

This was real.

Bloodfang had come into Blackridge territory.

For her.

Jay turned back toward her.

"You stay here."

Emily blinked.

"What?"

"The inner hall will be guarded."

Her wolf immediately bristled.

"I'm not hiding."

Jay stepped closer.

"You're not hiding," he said evenly. "You're not walking directly into the trap they came to set."

Emily's jaw tightened.

"Jay-"

"No."

The word carried Alpha command.

Emily felt it ripple through her body instantly, her wolf instinctively responding to the authority in his voice.

But she forced herself to hold his gaze anyway.

"They're here because of me."

"Yes."

"Then let me fight."

The words hung between them.

Jay's eyes darkened.

"Do you think this is about proving something?"

Emily shook her head sharply.

"No. I think it's about not letting them drag this war through two packs while I sit behind locked doors."

For a moment the tension between them flared dangerously.

The bond surged.

Anger.

Fear.

Protectiveness.

Jay lowered his voice.

"If they get close enough to take you-"

"They won't."

"You don't know that."

Emily stepped closer.

"I know you won't let them."

Silence fell between them.

The hall around them continued moving-warriors preparing weapons, patrol wolves rushing in with updates-but the world seemed to narrow for one strange moment.

Jay looked at her like he was trying to decide something impossible.

Then Rowan's voice cut through the tension.

"Alpha."

Jay turned.

"Movement along the east line," Rowan said. "Three wolves pushing toward the clearing."

Jay's expression hardened instantly.

"They're trying to pull our fighters forward."

"Should we engage?"

Jay thought for only a second.

"Yes. But keep half the warriors inside the perimeter."

Rowan nodded and began shouting instructions immediately.

Several wolves sprinted toward the doors.

Emily watched them go.

Her wolf paced beneath her ribs.

They were close.

Too close.

Jay looked back at her again.

"Emily-"

Before he could finish, a crash echoed from somewhere above them.

Everyone in the hall froze.

The sound had come from the roof.

Wood splintering.

Claws scraping.

Jay's head snapped upward.

"They're not all outside," he said.

A second later, something slammed against the upper beams again.

The hall erupted into motion.

"Roof breach!" Rowan shouted.

Two warriors shifted instantly, bones cracking as fur spread across their bodies.

Emily's heart jumped into her throat.

Bloodfang had split their attack.

Some wolves had approached the clearing to distract the pack...

While others had climbed onto the roof.

Jay grabbed her arm again.

"Now you stay behind me."

Emily didn't argue this time.

Another loud crack split the air overhead.

A section of the wooden ceiling splintered.

And suddenly a Bloodfang wolf crashed through.

The massive gray wolf hit the floor hard, rolling once before snapping to its feet with a vicious snarl.

Gasps erupted across the hall.

The wolf's eyes glowed bright yellow as it scanned the room.

Searching.

Looking for her.

Jay stepped forward instantly.

His wolf surged to the surface.

A deep growl shook the hall.

"Wrong territory," Jay said coldly.

The Bloodfang wolf bared its teeth.

Then it lunged.

Jay shifted mid-motion.

The transformation was violent and fast-bones cracking, fur exploding across his body as the massive black wolf that was Jay's true form collided with the intruder.

The impact shook the floor.

Growls filled the hall.

Emily stumbled back as two enormous wolves slammed into a nearby table, splintering the wood beneath their weight.

Warriors rushed forward.

Another section of the roof shattered.

Two more Bloodfang wolves dropped into the hall.

Chaos erupted.

Claws.

Fur.

Teeth.

The air filled with snarls and the metallic scent of blood.

Emily's wolf surged violently.

Every instinct inside her screamed to join the fight.

But Jay's command still echoed faintly through her mind.

Stay behind me.

Across the hall, Rowan and two warriors tackled one of the invading wolves.

The second leapt toward the door.

Toward the exit.

Toward her.

Emily froze.

The wolf's yellow eyes locked onto her instantly.

Recognition flashed there.

Found her.

The predator crouched, muscles bunching as it prepared to lunge.

Emily's wolf exploded forward.

Heat rushed through her body.

Faster.

Hotter.

Stronger than before.

Her vision sharpened.

The wolf sprang.

Emily moved.

Not backward.

Forward.

The silver energy beneath her skin surged.

For a split second, the world seemed to slow.

She saw the wolf's claws coming.

Saw the flash of its teeth.

And then-

Her hand shot out.

The moment her palm hit the wolf's chest, the strange silver glow burst across her skin.

The impact threw the massive wolf sideways.

It slammed into a wooden pillar with a sickening crack.

The hall went silent.

Even the fighting wolves paused for half a second.

Emily stood there breathing hard.

Her hand still glowing faintly.

Across the room, Jay had pinned the first Bloodfang wolf beneath his massive black form.

But now his golden eyes were fixed on her.

Shock flashed through the bond.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Because whatever had just happened...

Was far stronger than what she had shown in the ring.

And the Bloodfang wolves had seen it too.

One of them let out a low, satisfied growl.

"Silver."

The word echoed through the hall like a curse.

And suddenly Emily understood.

This wasn't just an attack.

It was confirmation.

Bloodfang had come tonight to see if the rumors were true.

Now they had their answer.

And the war had truly begun.
