The Amulet's Naughty Gift
Chapter 1 The Legal Trap
The desk sergeant rapped once and stepped inside without waiting for permission. “Lieutenant, that consultant you wanted for the Summers case is here.”
Lieutenant Sofia Ramirez glanced up from her screen, her petite frame straightening in the crisp navy uniform.
Mid-thirties, mixed Latina heritage, short dark hair framing sharp cheekbones and warm brown eyes that missed nothing.
She carried herself with the quiet authority of someone who’d seen every flavor of human mess Denver could throw at her and still believed in untangling it.
“Thanks, Mike. Send her in.”
Dr. Elena Kellogg entered with effortless presence.
Six-foot-one in sensible flats, broad shoulders tapering to a narrow waist, square jaw softened by subtle makeup and warm hazel eyes.
She wore a tailored herringbone skirt suit that hit just below the knee—professional, elegant, quietly expensive.
Elena was a post-op trans woman whose reputation in gender-identity psychology was legendary.
She ran the most respected workshops for trans and non-binary clients across the Rockies, and her Denver practice drew clients nationwide.
Her own journey gave her an empathy that cut straight through bullshit.
Sofia stood and offered her hand. “Dr. Kellogg. Appreciate you coming on short notice. This one’s… unusual.”
Elena’s grip was firm, confident. “You mentioned it wasn’t the typical cross-dresser or drag situation. That’s what hooked me.”
Sofia slid a thick file across the desk. “Non-disclosure’s already on file with the department. Take a look. If you’re in, we move fast. The DA wants this kept quiet—no arraignment, no media circus.”
Elena settled into the visitor chair and opened the folder. Minutes passed in silence broken only by the soft rustle of pages. When she finally leaned back, her expression was equal parts fascination and concern.
“Prints match a missing male named Alex Summers. Multiple re-runs, same result. DNA too. But the person in holding is clearly female—five-seven, curvy as hell, lactating, and currently caring for an infant. If this is real…” She tapped the file. “We’re in uncharted territory.”
Sofia nodded. “That’s why I called you. The judge agreed to release her into your custody for evaluation. No institutional placement unless you sign off. We need someone who won’t freak out and someone who can actually listen.”
Elena studied the lieutenant. “You want her isolated from the rumor mill.”
“Exactly. She’s got a baby to care for. We’re not throwing her into general pop or psych lockdown if we can help it. I’m asking if you know anyone—someone from your circles—who can provide a safe, private place while you work. At least a month to start.”
Elena closed the file slowly. “I do. A former client who’s further along in her own transition.
Single, owns a big house in Boulder. She’s steady, discreet, and has the resources.
But Elena… this isn’t a weekend favor. If even half of what’s in here is true, we’re looking at weeks of intensive work. ”
“We can do a month,” Sofia said. “Judge Carter’s already signed off pending your agreement. You call the shots on care and security.”
Elena’s gaze drifted back to the file. “Do you believe her story?”
The lieutenant exhaled. “I don’t know what the hell to believe anymore. But I know the forensics don’t lie, and I know she’s terrified for that baby. That’s enough to keep me from throwing her in a cell.”
An hour later, paperwork signed and bureaucracy navigated, Sofia escorted Elena through the lower levels of Denver PD headquarters to a padded holding room. The air was cool and faintly antiseptic.
On a thin mattress in the corner sat a young woman in standard-issue pale green prison scrubs.
Long brown hair hung in tangled waves around a face that would have been striking with a little rest and care—high cheekbones, full lips, large expressive eyes currently red-rimmed from crying.
She was maybe five-seven, with a lush, generously curved figure that the loose dress did nothing to hide.
Full, heavy breasts strained the fabric.
Long, toned legs were tucked up protectively, bare feet delicate against the concrete.
The moment the door opened she flinched. “Get the fuck away from me, you creeps!” Her voice cracked, raw from hours of shouting and tears. “Why the hell am I wearing this girly bullshit?”
“Standard procedure,” Sofia replied evenly. “You’ve been told.”
“I don’t give a shit. I want my own clothes back.”
Sofia’s tone stayed calm. “Your sweats were trashed—filthy and torn. We had to dispose of them. But if you cooperate, we’re releasing you temporarily into Dr. Kellogg’s custody for evaluation.”
The woman’s head snapped up. For the first time she really looked at Elena—tall, commanding, unmistakably trans. Suspicion warred with desperate hope in those bloodshot eyes.
“Psych, right? Why the fuck would you believe anything I say when even I can barely believe it?”
Before Elena could answer, a female guard appeared at the door with a bundled blanket in her arms. “Lieutenant, the infant needs feeding.”
The bundle was placed carefully in the woman’s arms. Her entire demeanor shifted.
The fury drained into something softer, more exhausted.
With practiced, if reluctant, movements she unbuttoned the top of the green dress, tugged it aside to reveal a plain white nursing bra, unhooked the flap, and guided the tiny baby—barely a few weeks old—to one full, engorged breast.
The moment the infant latched, a visible tremor ran through the woman’s body.
Her head fell back against the padded wall.
A low, involuntary sound escaped her throat—half sigh, half groan—as the pressure in her heavy breast eased.
Milk let down in a warm, tingling rush. The baby suckled greedily, tiny hands kneading the soft flesh, and the woman’s free hand came up to cradle the small head with surprising gentleness.
Elena watched every micro-expression. The tight line of the woman’s jaw.
The way her free hand fisted in the blanket even as her body relaxed into the rhythm of nursing.
The flicker of something like reluctant pleasure beneath layers of resentment and confusion.
This wasn’t simple postpartum bonding. This was something far stranger.
The woman—Alex Hale, according to the file—kept her eyes closed, but a single tear slipped down her cheek and vanished into the collar of the dress.
Sofia spoke quietly. “Her name’s Alex. The baby’s Jordan. Alex insists Jordan is… was… her wife.”
Elena didn’t react outwardly, but inside her mind was already cataloging details, cross-referencing with every case she’d ever worked. Body dysphoria this profound. The prints. The lactation. The fierce, terrified protectiveness over the infant.
“Alex,” Elena said gently once the baby had settled into a contented rhythm. “I’m Dr. Elena Kellogg. I specialize in cases involving gender identity and transition—both voluntary and… not. Lieutenant Ramirez believes you might benefit from someone who won’t immediately dismiss what you’re saying.”
Alex’s eyes opened. They were guarded, exhausted, but sharp. “You’re gonna tell me I’m crazy like everyone else.”
“I’m going to listen,” Elena replied. “Really listen. And I’m going to help you figure out what happens next—for you and for Jordan.”
A bitter laugh escaped Alex. “Good luck with that. I’ve been trying to figure it out since the medallion turned my entire life inside out.”
The baby made a small contented sound against her breast. Alex’s free hand stroked the tiny back almost unconsciously.
His—her—body had betrayed her in every possible way: lush, heavy swells that ached and leaked and responded to an infant’s hunger with a warm, pulsing relief that sent unwanted sparks of something dangerously close to pleasure through her nerves.
Yet she held the child like it was the only real thing left in the world.
Elena saw it all. The conflict. The fear. The unwilling adaptation.
Sofia cleared her throat. “We can have you out of here tonight if Dr. Kellogg agrees to take custody. Her contact has a secure home in Boulder. Private. No cameras. No press. You’ll have space to breathe—and someone who actually knows how to navigate this kind of situation.”
Alex looked between them, suspicion still thick but cracking under sheer exhaustion. “And if I say no?”
“Then you stay here,” Sofia said simply. “And Jordan goes into the system until we sort the legal mess. Your call.”
Alex’s arms tightened around the baby. The motion pressed her full breast more firmly against the suckling mouth; another warm ripple of let-down made her breath hitch.
She hated how good it felt. Hated that her body was already learning this new rhythm while her mind screamed that none of this should be happening.
“Fine,” she muttered. “Whatever. Just… get us out of here.”
Elena nodded once, decisive. “Then we’ll make it happen.”
As they prepared the release paperwork, Elena watched Alex finish feeding Jordan, then carefully burp the tiny girl against her shoulder.
Every movement spoke of someone who had never wanted this body, never wanted these generous, milk-heavy breasts or this involuntary intimacy, yet was already protecting the infant with everything she had.
The prints didn’t lie. The DNA didn’t lie. And the raw, conflicted tenderness on Alex Hale’s face as she rocked her “wife” told Elena one undeniable truth:
Whatever had happened to these two, it was real.
And it was only the beginning.
