Silent Vow
Kieran POV
I hit the second Dragon like a battering ram of solid steel, my claws tearing through the suffocating wave of heat radiating off its scales.
Kaelen, Vane, Lukan, and Rhyon hit it a fraction of a second later, a synchronized four-point strike targeting the joints of its massive wings. The dragon shrieked, a deafening sound of twisting metal, and snapped its jaws toward Lukan.
'Drop, Lukan!' I barked through the Pack Link.
The Alpha of Stormwatch instantly flattened his massive body against the dirt, the dragon's corrosive teeth clipping nothing but the air above his ears.
I used the opening to vault off a shattered tree trunk, sinking my fangs into the thick armor plating behind the monster's horned skull.
The taste of ash and dark magic flooded my senses, but I anchored my weight, dragging its head down.
'First target neutralized, my King!' Torrance’s voice suddenly thundered through the mental network, thick with bloodlust and triumph. 'The ice magic the Luna hit it with earlier had shattered parts of its armor! We tore right through it! We are on your six!'
I risked a split-second glance across the clearing.
The first dragon lay motionless in a pool of its own dark, sizzling ichor, its defenses having been severely compromised by Aurora's initial attacks.
Torrance, Silas, and the remaining warriors didn't pause to catch their breath.
They surged across the pulverized earth as a unified wave of destruction, throwing themselves entirely into our fray.
With this many of Valdora’s most lethal warriors now focusing their absolute, terrifying might on a single target, the tide of the battle turned violently.
But the dragon had realized it too.
Cornered, bleeding, and stripped of its aerial advantage, the second Dragon abandoned all instinct for self-preservation and completely enraged. It became a writhing maelstrom of barbed tail, rending claws, and searing heat.
I pushed the royal Pack Link to its absolute limits, my tactical mind working at a dizzying, frantic pace to keep my men alive. It was a brutal, bloody game of inches.
'Silas, left flank is collapsing, reinforce! Kaelen, Rhyon, pull your Betas back, its tail is sweeping! Vane, blind its right eye!'
My commands fired through the network in rapid, icy succession.
The Vanguard responded with flawless military precision.
Every time the dragon reared to crush a wolf, another would land an attack to send it off balance.
Every time it opened its maw to snap, three more would tear into its flanks to draw its aggro.
We were bleeding it out, death by a thousand synchronized cuts, and despite the sheer, chaotic violence of the beast's rampage, not a single Valdoran wolf took a lethal hit.
Then, the dragon stopped thrashing.
It planted its massive, heavily armored front claws deep into the dirt and reared its head back, ignoring the dozen wolves currently tearing at its hind legs. A horrific, sickening sound of suction echoed through the clearing as it drew in a massive breath.
Deep within its chest, an agonizingly bright, orange-black light ignited, glowing visibly through the gaps in its scales. The heat in the clearing instantly spiked to a suffocating, blistering degree.
It wasn't aiming for a single wolf. It was preparing to blanket the entire center of our formation in a concentrated, inescapable wave of corrosive fire.
'SCATTER!' I roared through the link, abandoning my grip on its neck to shove a younger guard out of the immediate blast radius. 'Get out of the way! NOW!'
But the beast had timed it perfectly. There were too many wolves tangled in its legs, too many massive bodies packed together. We weren't going to clear the radius in time.
The dragon unhinged its massive jaw, the blinding, acidic fire bubbling in the back of its throat.
Suddenly, the ambient temperature in the clearing plummeted to absolute zero.
A blinding streak of luminescent blue-white magic erupted from the tree line. It wasn't a barrage of small shards this time. It was a single, massive javelin of ice, spinning through the air with the aerodynamic perfection of a ballista bolt.
It shot cleanly between my shoulder and Kaelen's head, rocketing directly into the Dragon's open, glowing maw.
The impact was cataclysmic.
The spear detonated inside the beast's throat.
The explosive release of freezing ice magic instantly neutralized the bubbling, corrosive fire, crystallizing the horrific heat into brittle, blackened frost.
The dragon’s eyes bulged, a strangled, gurgling wheeze escaping its ruined throat as the agonizing cold paralyzed its vocal cords and locked its jaw open.
Through our mate bond, a breathless purr vibrated against my mind. 'Did you really think I was just going to lay there and let you have all the fun?'
Aurora.
I didn't need to look back to know my mate was back on her feet, hurt but unbroken, wielding her magic to protect my pack. Our pack.
The dragon staggered, completely incapacitated by the internal freeze.
"NOW!" I bellowed aloud, the sound tearing through the clearing like a literal thunderclap.
I launched myself off the dirt, ascending in a massive, physics-defying leap. Silas, Torrance, and Kaelen surged with me, a synchronized execution squad of Alpha power. We hit the beast's throat simultaneously.
My jaws clamped down on its frost-brittle windpipe. But the exact second my fangs pierced the monster’s flesh, something seemingly impossible happened.
A violent, crackling surge of raw energy erupted from deep within my chest, rushing through my blood and straight into my jaws. Lightning. Blinding, jagged arcs of pure, blue-white electricity exploded from my fangs, injecting a massive, lethal voltage directly into the dragon's nervous system.
I hadn't summoned it. I hadn't even known I was capable of it.
The sharp, metallic scent of burning flesh instantly overpowered anything else, and my wolf recoiled in sheer, internal shock as the elemental magic surged.
It was the mating mark. Claiming Aurora, blending her blood with mine, must have awakened an elemental affinity within me that I never knew I possessed.
Fueled by the staggering surge of this newfound power, I didn't just bite; I utilized the sheer, crushing momentum of my fall and violently twisted my weight.
With a sickening, deafening CRACK that echoed for miles, the Dragon's neck finally snapped.
The glowing crimson light in its eyes flickered, dimmed, and completely died. The colossal nightmare collapsed to the forest floor like a felled mountain, sending a final, massive cloud of dust and ash billowing into the canopy.
Dead silence fell over the Vanguard, save for the heavy, ragged sound of massive wolves gasping for air, and the lingering, electric crackle of lightning fading from my fangs.

Aurora POV
The second the ice javelin left my control, the blinding adrenaline that had been holding me together completely evaporated, leaving nothing but a vast, hollow ache in its wake.
I hadn't actually fully healed myself. When the dragon's tail had connected, it had done devastating damage.
I had used my magic to mend my ribs and knit the punctured lung to stop the internal bleeding so I wouldn't bleed out.
But that was it. I had forcefully gathered every single remaining drop of my magic and condensed it into that single, hyper-lethal spear to help my mate.
The micro fractures and the agonizing bruising were just going to have to heal the old-fashioned werewolf way: with time, food, and a ridiculous amount of sleep.
I didn't even try to catch myself as I slumped, fully expecting to eat the dirt. But I didn't fall.
A thick, heavily muscled shoulder slid seamlessly beneath my neck.
Alpha Garrick let out a soft, rumbling huff, gently adjusting his massive russet bulk to act as a living, breathing brace.
He supported my frame with surprising tenderness for a warrior, carefully angling himself to ensure absolutely no pressure was put on my injured side as I sank to the ground.
The earth shuddered. I forced my heavy eyelids open just in time to see Kieran’s jaws lock onto the second dragon’s throat.
But before he even twisted his weight, a blinding, jagged flash of blue-white lightning erupted directly from his fangs.
The sharp, metallic tang of ozone instantly cut through the suffocating smell of ash.
I felt the staggering surge of raw elemental power echo down our bond, a dormant affinity awakened by the blending of our bloodlines when we marked each other.
With a cataclysmic crack of thunder and breaking bone, he snapped the paralyzed beast's neck, the colossal body hitting the earth with a thud that echoed through the trees. I let out a ragged, exhausted breath.
A fraction of a second later, a towering shadow eclipsed the sun.
Kieran practically tore through the space between the fallen dragons and me, his massive black wolf sliding into the dirt right beside Garrick.
His chest was heaving, his dark coat coated in dust and black ichor, and the crackling scent of lightning still clung heavily to his fur.
His golden eyes were completely, devastatingly frantic.
He pressed his large, warm snout directly against my neck, inhaling my scent in deep, desperate drags as his paws practically wrapped around my smaller white frame.
'Aurora,' his voice shuddered down our mate bond, completely stripped of its icy, Kingly authority. He sounded like a man who had just barely survived watching his entire world end. 'Aurora, please. Talk to me. Tell me where it hurts.'
I leaned my head against his cheek, seeking the grounding, steady thrum of his heartbeat.
‘I’m okay, Kieran,’ I murmured in his mind. Even my mental voice felt slurred, weighed down by a bone-deep fatigue. ‘I promise. The worst is healed. I just... my magic is completely tapped out. I’m so tired.’
Kieran let out a sound that was half-sob, half-growl, pressing his forehead firmly against mine.
'You terrified me,' he breathed, a possessive, trembling wave of relief washing down the bond to soothe my aching muscles.
'You beautiful, reckless, impossible woman. I've got you. I've got you, my love.'
‘I’m really alright,’ I assured him once more, my words barely a whisper in his head. Surrendering to the exhaustion, I let myself rest in the safe, warm cocoon between my mate and the Ironwood Alpha, and finally allowed the tension to bleed from my spine.
A rustle of dead leaves pulled me back from the edge of sleep.
It was the young Beta. The one who had almost gotten seriously injured in the crossfire. He came toward us, his grey coat ruined with ash and dirt, favoring his left paw. Yet his gaze never wavered from my face.
Kieran lifted his head, his eyes flashing a protective warning.
The wolf stopped a few feet away. He didn't whimper or speak.
He simply let his legs give out, sinking down until his chest met the dirt, and pressed his snout between his paws.
It was the deepest submission any wolf could offer.
He wasn't bowing to his Alpha's crown. He was silently swearing his life to me.
This was a vow. A life, laid willingly at my feet…
The same life I had just paid for with my own blood.
