Morning Ambush

Aurora POV

I woke up from the deepest sleep I had experienced in ages.

My senses returned slowly, anchored first by the decadent softness beneath me and the heavy warmth pressing securely against my spine. I inhaled deeply. My nose was flooded with the intoxicating, grounding scent of dark pine, cedar, and rain storm.

It smelled absolutely amazing.

Still half-asleep, I let out a soft, contented sigh and instinctively nuzzled into the softness. A low, vibrating rumble resonated against my back in response.

I fluttered my eyes open, blinking away the lingering heavy sleep.

I turned my head slightly and found myself staring directly into a thick expanse of midnight-black fur.

Kieran hadn’t just come to me. He had shifted into his massive wolf form, curling his body against my smaller white frame to create a secure nest.

My inner wolf let out a deep, rumbling purr of absolute bliss. For years, I had slept with one ear swiveled toward the wind, constantly bracing for an attack in the ash. Now, wrapped in the protective embrace of my mate, I felt a profound, unshakeable safety.

‘Good morning, little wolf,’ Kieran’s voice vibrated through our private mind link. It was thick, warm, and way too enticing. ‘How are you feeling?’

I shifted slightly, testing my muscles.

‘I feel surprisingly alright,’ I projected back, stretching my front paws out until my claws caught the thick blankets. ‘I think I just needed to rest properly.’

Kieran shifted his head, his eyes cracking open to look at me with overwhelming fondness. ‘I am very glad to hear that. Lyra has been awake since dawn preparing. Are you still up for a brunch party with our Vanguard?’

At the mention of the sub-pack and the promise of food, my ears immediately perked up. My tail gave an involuntary, excited thump against the mattress. ‘Absolutely. I am starving.’

Kieran let out a soft, huffing laugh in my mind, a sound that made my chest flutter.

I looked at him, taking in the relaxed, unguarded expression on his face.

A sudden, bright spark of mischief flared to life within me.

I felt completely safe, entirely healed, and overflowing with a sudden burst of playful, morning energy.

I needed him to know I was truly okay, and words simply weren’t enough.

Without a single second of warning, I twisted my body around, kicking my back legs off the mattress and launching my white fluffy self directly at him.

‘Ambush!’ I projected brightly through our bond, my tail whipping back and forth in pure delight.

I managed to catch him off guard for exactly half a second. My front paws hit his broad shoulders, sending us both toppling sideways into a pile of heavy pillows. I let out a playful, challenging growl, snapping my jaws harmlessly toward his ear.

Kieran let out a rumbling huff of surprise that quickly morphed into a deep, vibrating chuckle in my mind. ‘Oh, so the patient has her teeth back already?’

Before I could press my advantage, Kieran reacted with the power of the Alpha King he is. He completely shifted his center of gravity, dragging me with him. The world spun in a chaotic, dizzying blur of black and white fur, tangled velvet blankets, and playful snarls.

I used my smaller size and agility to twist out from under his heavy paws, squirming out of his hold to press my back against the heavy wooden headboard. With the limited space between us, I immediately batted my front paw against his wet nose. A classic, cheeky invitation to skirmish.

Kieran’s eyes narrowed with bright, predatory amusement. ‘You are going to regret that, my love.’

’You have to catch me first!′ I retorted, ducking beneath his chin as he lunged.

Because the mattress gave us limited room to maneuver, the skirmish instantly became a tight, chaotic grapple.

He was way too fast for someone his size, but he was also holding back, his movements deliberately pulled to ensure he didn’t accidentally hurt me.

I took full, unapologetic advantage of his hesitation.

We rolled into a messy pile of heavy blankets and snapping jaws.

I managed to sneak under his guard, playfully nipping at the thick ruff of black fur at his throat, while his massive paws gently boxed me in against the pillows to keep me at bay.

’Is this the best the powerful King of Valdora can do?′ I teased through the link, panting happily as I wriggled just enough to nip at his front leg.

‘I am actively trying not to break my mate, you impossible woman,’ he growled back playfully, though his mental voice was absolutely dripping with deep affection. ‘But if you insist...’

The dynamic shifted instantly. Kieran stopped holding back. When I lunged for his ear again, he met me halfway, using my own momentum against me with flawless grace. He shifted his body, trapping my back legs in the tangled velvet blankets and rolling his weight over mine.

In the blink of an eye, the skirmish was over.

I found myself flat on my back, pressed firmly into the softness of the mattress.

Kieran stood directly over me, his massive front paws planted securely on either side of my shoulders, effectively pinning me down.

He was incredibly careful not to put his full weight on me, keeping his chest hovering just an inch above mine, but his physical dominance was absolute and entirely thrilling.

His golden eyes gleamed down at me, triumphant and burning with a possessive heat. ‘You are truly testing your luck this morning, my love.’

I let out a breathless, happy whine, my tail wagging furiously against the ruined sheets in total surrender. ′I think I proved my point. I’m completely fine.′

‘You proved you are a menace,’ he corrected fondly. “But I would not have you any other way”

Kieran lowered his head, entirely bypassing my playful, snapping jaws, and buried his warm snout into the soft, thick fur of my neck. He inhaled deeply, nuzzling affectionately against my mark, sending a rush of pure, possessive warmth straight down our mate bond that made my toes curl.

Kieran POV

The vibrating hum of her happy whine reverberated against my snout, sending a secondary tremor of pure, unadulterated contentment straight through my chest.

I kept my body carefully suspended over her, my nose buried deep in the thick, snow-white fur of her neck. I drank in the crisp, clean scent of my lovely mate, letting it settle the last lingering edges of yesterday’s terror.

Watching her take that dragon’s tail had nearly shattered my sanity. Yet here she was, less than twenty-four hours later, bright, vibrant, and tackling my head like a feral pup. The sheer relief of it made my wolf want to howl until the stone foundations of the palace cracked.

I had never slept in my shifted form before.

But last night, when Silas and Elara had left, my human skin had felt entirely too restrictive.

My wolf had demanded to be the one to hold her, to wrap myself around her and guard her while she rested.

And it had been the most profoundly grounding sleep of my entire life.

Waking up to the soft rhythm of her breathing, feeling the warmth of her white coat tangled with my dark one, had felt like a piece of my soul clicking perfectly into place.

It was a first for me, but as I felt her tail continue to rhythmically thump against the mattress beneath us, I swore to the Goddess it would absolutely not be the last.

‘You are entirely too pleased with yourself,’ I rumbled through our bond, giving her neck one last, affectionate drag of my nose before pulling back just enough to look down into her striking, mismatched eyes.

‘I survived a dragon and successfully ambushed an Alpha King before breakfast,’ she projected back, her mental voice bright and laced with a deeply infectious arrogance. ‘I think I’ve earned the right to be a little smug.’

I let out a soft, huffing laugh, my eyes scanning her sleek form one last time to ensure our roughhousing hadn’t aggravated her injuries. But she was practically glowing with energy.

‘You have,’ I conceded warmly, gently bumping my snout against hers.

I meant to pull back so we could slowly get ready for the brunch. But of course Aurora had other plans.

Instead of relaxing into the mattress, she shifted beneath me. The movement was slow, deliberate, and entirely wicked. She arched her spine, pressing the sleek, warm lines of her body flush against my chest. Her eyes darkened, the bright playfulness melting into an intoxicating wave of desire.

‘The sun has barely risen, Kai,’ she projected, her mental voice dropping into a low, breathless purr that sent a shockwave of raw desire straight through my body.

She playfully snapped her teeth just millimeters from my jaw, a clear, unmistakable challenge.

‘Are you going to let me go that easily? I am not entirely convinced you have properly asserted your dominance, Alpha.’

The last fragile tether of my restraint snapped completely.

My wolf reacted instantly, roaring its absolute approval at her defiance. A deep, chest-rattling growl vibrated through my ribs as I shifted my weight, pinning her more firmly against the ruined sheets. ‘You are playing a very dangerous game.’

‘Then play with me,’ she countered fiercely. She twisted her head just enough to drag her soft tongue along the sensitive edge of my jaw, sending a violent jolt of electricity straight down my spine.

Our mate bond ignited into an inferno of desire.

I abandoned any thought of the outside world, lowering my head to drag my snout along the curve of her throat.

I inhaled the intoxicating scent of my beautiful mate before my fangs gently, possessively scraped against her mating mark. Aurora let out a sharp, needy whine.

The playful skirmish dissolved entirely into a primal dance.

The heavy, intoxicating pull of our wolves took absolute control, demanding to claim, to mate, to completely devour the distance between us.

The brunch, the council, and the rest of Valdora ceased to exist as I buried myself in our shared desire, surrendering to the wild, consuming fire of our bond.
