The Art Of Loving A Millionaire Savage #2

“ I have something that works wonders for that nausea and vomiting,” DaVinci’s nurse, Monica, told me as she breezed into his suite while I hovered over the toilet.
Between DaVinci, River, and my mother being shot and this pregnancy, hugging the toilet bowl had become my favorite pastime. The thought of losing any of them always made me want to vomit. On top of that, our baby didn’t like shit that I put in my body so keeping food down was impossible. I thought it was so crazy that before DaVinci ended up in a coma, I could eat whatever I wanted. It was as if our baby knew something was wrong with their daddy and was throwing a fit about it.
“At this point, I’ll try anything,” I groaned, standing all the way up and walking back into the room.
“I have these ginger candies that my granny used to give me when I was pregnant with my little one. Knocked that nausea right out,” she scribbled on her clipboard after checking on Vin’s vitals.
Nodding, I sat in the chair that was next to his bed. “I’ll try them. This baby is kicking my ass.”
“I’ll bring some by when I come back on the next shift,” she gave my shoulder a comforting squeeze. “Hang in there, sweetheart.”
“Thanks,” I faintly smiled at her before returning my attention to DaVinci after she walked out.
The sound of the machine breathing for him had become my favorite sound. To me, it signified hope . Every time it beeped, and his chest rose and fell, it was a sweet reminder that my husband was still in there. That he was still fighting. My eyes were fixed on his now unnatural facial features, hoping to see any type of movement. I was missing his smile, the way he would frown his face at me if I said something he didn’t like, the mischievous look he would get right before he did something playful. I missed him . I hated that he had to spend his 30 th birthday in the damn hospital, but there wasn’t shit I could do about that.
Three weeks ago when he was brought in, the doctor tried to tell me to prepare for the worst and be realistic about things. That doctor didn’t know my husband the way I did. He didn’t know how much of a fighter he was. How strong he was. How stubborn he was. DaVinci could be dramatic, but he wasn’t die on me dramatic. He would never leave me to go through my pregnancy alone. He just wouldn’t do it. He wouldn’t leave this world without meeting his child. Not my husband.
The doctor was persistent that DaVinci nor River would survive their comas. Acting in their best interest, I got that doctor off both of their treatment teams and found the best doctor in the state of Virginia. Since money wasn’t an object, I had River and DaVinci moved to their own private suites in the hospital where they were both heavily guarded by security. Without knowing who was behind this senseless act, I’d rather be safe than sorry.
My initial thought was that Tonya was behind that shit, but I didn’t think she could be so evil that she’d try to kill her own kids. She seemed to be really broken up about them being shot, so I convinced myself that it wasn’t her. For the last few days, she had been suggesting we pull the plug on them since there had been no progress. I would shoot that bitch between the eyes before I let her pull the plug on my husband or my sister-in-law.
Even though River’s and my relationship is still fairly new, I loved her just as much as I love my twin. There was no way I was allowing Tonya to kill them, mother or not. Besides, I had power of attorney over DaVinci, so I was the only one responsible for any medical decisions where he was concerned. Lake had power of attorney over River by default since DaVinci was unable to fulfill that role. I prayed daily that Tonya wouldn’t be able to convince Lake to pull the plug on his sister.
“Any updates?”
Turning slightly, I saw Tonya walking in wearing all black like she had been doing since her kids were admitted to the hospital. She had been acting at least halfway decent since the shooting. I still didn’t fuck with her like that though. I kept it cute for the sake of DaVinci and his healing. His new doctor, who was amazing, told me that he can still hear everything. I didn’t want him to hear me and his momma arguing while his body was trying to heal itself.
“No,” I turned back around, rubbing my man’s cheek. “He’s still fighting.”
She walked deeper into the room, stopping at the foot of his bed. “Mm. Clover, I know you don’t want to hear this, but they’re not going to wake up. This is no life for my kids to be living, laying up in hospital beds while the world is passing them by.”
“Mmhmm,” I hummed, feeling my anger starting to brew.
“Mmhm what? Use your words, darling. Clearly, I have no power when it comes to DaVinci, but I’m telling you the best thing for him is to take him off the machines and let his body do the rest. Maybe he will breathe on his own,” she pushed the issue.
“No, he won’t. His doctor already said that his body needs to heal after the trauma of the gunshots. He needs the machines to keep his breathing regulated. Why are you in such a rush to take him and River off life support?” I glared at her, trying to fight back a round of tears.
I wasn’t on the verge of tears because I was sad. I simply wanted to beat her ass every single time she mentioned taking either of them off the machines. Knowing I couldn’t, made me want to cry.
“It’s been nearly a month. How much longer do you want to keep him like this?”
“Until he fuckin’ wakes up,” I bit out angrily. “I don’t care how many times you come in here with that bullshit. I’m not taking him off life support,” I rubbed his hand while staring at his face. “My baby is a fighter. He will pull through this.”
“I don’t want to have to get the lawyers involved but—”
“Do whatever the fuck you want! I said what I said!” I snapped without even looking at her.
I listened as she scoffed and then her high heels clicked against the ground, exiting the room. Wiping the tears that fell from my eyes, I did my best to pull it together. I didn’t want DaVinci to hear me crying.
“Bae, I know you can hear me. Ima slap the fuck out of yo momma as soon as I have this baby. She keep playing on yo top like you not coming out of this stronger and better than ever,” standing up, I leaned over and kissed his cheek a few times. “I love you so much, and I can’t wait to see your pretty eyes again. I’m gonna go sit with your sister for a little while, but I’ll be back to see you before I go home for the night.”
Kissing his cheek a few more times, I squeezed his hand and walked out of the room. Security was everywhere, just how I liked to see it. Speaking to the few night shift nurses that were allowed in this part of the hospital, I went across the hall to River’s room. Tonya was nowhere to be found, letting me know she either checked on River first or she hadn’t stopped in to see her at all.
“Hey, pretty girl,” I kissed her cheek next and then took a seat. “Let me catch you up on this week’s episode of Real Housewives of Potomac .”
I held her hand as I filled her in on the drama with the cast. After spending an hour with her, I stood up to leave just as Lake came into the room. I knew he was the very reason the murder rate had shot up in the city. He was hurting tremendously and taking it out on anyone he even thought had a vendetta against their family.
“Wassup, sis?” He hugged me and then nodded towards River. “How she doing?”
“Still fighting,” I assured him with a warm smile. “I’m gonna say my see you laters to Vin and then I’m headed home.”
He nodded, occupying the chair that I previously had. “Be safe, sis.”
“You too, Lake. I mean it.”
Walking back out, I stepped back over to Vinny’s room before Jason and D escorted me to my house. Since the shooting, I had been staying at my own place again. Vinny’s house was way too big for me to stay there without him. Plus, going there and knowing that he wasn’t gonna be in the same bed as me broke my heart. His security detail had now become mine until we got to the bottom of the shooting.
