False Trails
T he Manchester shipping offices occupied a narrow building on a street behind the Commercial Road, a thoroughfare I would not have known existed had Cecilia Blackwood not placed it before me like a breadcrumb on a forest path.
I had not found the breadcrumb. The breadcrumb had found me, deposited with exquisite subtlety during our second interview at Blackwood House, when she had spoken of the Earl's business dealings in the particular tone of a woman revealing painful truths she would rather keep private.
The specific name she had mentioned, Candover and Sons, textile importers, had lodged in my notebook like a splinter, and for three days in early January I had pursued it with the tenacity of a man who believed he was following evidence rather than being led by the nose.
The office was cold. The single fireplace in the waiting room had been lit that morning but had already burned to embers, and the clerk who interviewed me wore his overcoat indoors and cupped his hands around a mug of something that smelled of tea and rum.
His name was Phelps, and he had been with Candover and Sons for eleven years, and he knew nothing whatsoever that was of any use to me.
"The Earl?" Phelps frowned, rifling through a ledger that was thicker than my arm.
"There was some difficulty with a shipment in eighty-seven.
Contractual matter. The Earl believed Candover had overcharged on the duty for a consignment of French silk.
It was resolved. I recall a letter from the Earl's solicitor. Quite civil, under the circumstances."
"You have the letter?"
"The Earl's solicitor would have it. We simply filed the acknowledgment."
"How severe was the dispute?"
Phelps looked at me as though I had asked him to adjudicate a border conflict. "It was a matter of eighteen pounds, Inspector. The Earl was entitled to his position, but the amount was hardly the sort of thing that provokes violence between gentlemen."
Eighteen pounds. I wrote the figure in my notebook and underlined it twice, not because the amount was significant but because the insignificance of it was significant.
A dispute over eighteen pounds was not a motive for murder.
It was barely a motive for correspondence.
Eighteen pounds would not cover the cost of a decent dinner at the Criterion.
It would not buy a lady's opera ticket. It was the kind of sum that men like the Earl forgot about before the ink was dry on the settlement, and yet I had travelled two hundred miles to investigate it, because Cecilia Blackwood had placed it before me with the subtle precision of a woman who understands that a detective starved for evidence will chase any crumb, however meagre, however obviously worthless.
And yet Cecilia had presented it as a potential avenue of inquiry, a thread worth pulling, a suggestion so gently offered that I had not recognised it for what it was until I was standing in this freezing office, two hundred miles from London, talking to a clerk about a sum of money that would not cover a month's rent in a decent Mayfair townhouse.
I thanked Phelps and left. Outside, the January air hit me like a wall of wet iron.
Manchester in winter is a study in grey: grey sky, grey stone, grey smoke from the mill chimneys, grey water in the canal.
I stood on the pavement and watched a cart laden with cotton bales rumble past, the horse's breath rising in clouds, and I thought about the walk from the railway station to this office, and the interview I had conducted yesterday with a Mr. Harwick at the Manchester constabulary, and the hours I had spent in the public records office reviewing shipping manifests, and the hotel room I had booked for two nights at the Midland, and all of it, every hour and every mile, had been a waste of time, because the lead was not a lead. It was a decoy.
The realisation did not come all at once.
It came in stages, like the onset of a fever, beginning as a general malaise and sharpening into a specific pain.
I walked back toward the railway station through streets crowded with workers leaving the mills, their faces grey with cotton dust, and I reviewed the other leads Cecilia had provided.
The gambling debts. These were real. I had traced them myself at White's, the St. James's club where Viscount Pendleton had been a member for thirty years.
The club's secretary, a punctilious man named Featherstonehaugh, had produced the records with the reluctance of a man who views the exposure of a gentleman's financial affairs as a moral failing only slightly less grave than murder itself.
The Viscount had owed substantial sums at the faro table throughout the 1860s and 1870s, before his marriage to Cecilia.
He had cleared the debts in 1879, the year before the wedding, using funds from the sale of a property in Dorset.
After the marriage, his gambling had ceased entirely.
His wife, Featherstonehaugh noted with some surprise, had taken a firm hand with the household finances.
This was not evidence of murder. This was evidence of a woman who had reformed a husband's habits.
The debts predated the marriage by a decade.
They had no bearing on his death from heart failure three years later.
And yet I had spent two full days at White's and another day tracking down the Dorset property sale, and all of it had been another dead end, another false trail laid with the precision of a woman who understood exactly how far a determined man would chase a lead before recognising it as nothing.
And then there was Crutchley.
The name had come from Cecilia's mention of Henry Ravenscroft's business associates, specifically a man who had been involved in a dispute with Ravenscroft over a contract for the supply of railway ties.
I had traced Crutchley through three different addresses before finding him in a public house in Limehouse, a barrel-chested man with broken veins in his nose and a manner that oscillated between belligerence and self-pity depending on how full his glass was.
"Ravenscroft?" Crutchley had said, wiping foam from his moustache. "He was a bastard. But then they're all bastards in the railway business. Wouldn't trust any of them further than I could throw a locomotive."
"Did Ravenscroft have enemies?"
"Enemies?" Crutchley had laughed, a wet, phlegmy sound. "He had competitors, Inspector. That's not the same thing. Though I'll grant you the distinction is sometimes lost in the heat of commerce."
"Can you name them?"
"I can name a dozen men who'd have cheerfully seen Ravenscroft fail.
That's business. That's not murder." He had studied me over the rim of his glass with the bloodshot shrewdness of the chronically drunk.
"You're not from the railway people. You're from Scotland Yard.
What's a Yard man doing asking about Henry Ravenscroft? He's been dead three years."
I had not answered the question. Crutchley had not pressed it.
He had finished his beer, ordered another, and volunteered nothing more of value.
I had left the Limehouse public house with the smell of stale tobacco and cheap gin in my clothes and the certain knowledge that the Ravenscroft angle, like the Candover angle and the gambling angle before it, led precisely nowhere.
I had been fed. That was the word for it.
Fed, the way one feeds an animal in a maze, placing morsels of food at strategic intervals to keep it moving in the desired direction while never allowing it to reach the centre.
And the animal, in this case, was me. I thought of the laboratories I had read about at the British Museum, the experiments in which rats were placed in boxes with levers and rewards, and I wondered whether Cecilia had read the same studies, whether she understood that the principles of behavioural conditioning applied as neatly to detectives as they did to rodents.
The comparison was not flattering, but accuracy is more important than dignity, and the accuracy was damning.
I stopped at a coffee stall on Deansgate, where a vendor with a face like a weathered map sold cups of something hot and bitter that he assured me was coffee but which tasted primarily of chicory and regret.
He was an old man, his hands stained from years of handling coffee grounds, and he looked at me with the assessing gaze of a man who has spent his life watching people pass and has learned to read their moods from the speed of their walking and the set of their shoulders.
I drank it standing in the street, watching the traffic pass: drays and omnibuses and private carriages, the commerce of a city that did not pause for the frustrations of detectives from London.
A woman passed with two children in tow, their faces pinched with cold, and I thought about the money I was spending on this investigation, the railway fares and hotel bills and the hours away from my desk that my superiors would eventually notice and question.
Superintendent Graves had already warned me, before Christmas, that the Ashworth case was officially closed.
The Earl's death had been ruled natural causes.
I was pursuing it on my own time, using my own judgment, and the pursuit was consuming my career the way a river consumes a bridge: slowly, invisibly, until the moment of collapse.
