I looked for Cecilia and found her where I expected to find her: standing near the far archway, half in shadow, half in light, watching the room with the serene attentiveness of a woman observing the effects of her own work.

She had not spoken to Penelope. She had not confronted her, had not accused her, had not even glanced in her direction, as far as I could tell.

She had merely released information, and the information was doing its work without her assistance, spreading through the room like a stain through silk, invisible at first and then, suddenly, undeniable.

I moved closer to a cluster of women near the refreshment table and listened. The conversation was, at first, the usual social noise: compliments, complaints about the heat, speculation about the guest list. And then, like a current surfacing in still water, a new thread appeared.

"I heard the most extraordinary thing about Lord Ashford's finances," said Mrs. Fanshawe, with the particular tone of a woman who is not gossiping but merely sharing information that she finds personally alarming.

"Apparently there have been difficulties.

Quite serious difficulties. Something about mortgages on the Suffolk property.

And debts to moneylenders, if you can imagine such a thing. "

There was a pause. The pause was the most powerful weapon in the social arsenal, more devastating than any accusation, because it invited the listener to fill the silence with their own imagination, and what the listener imagined was always worse than anything that could be stated aloud.

"I had heard something of the same," said the Marchioness of Tavistock, and her voice carried the weight of a woman whose every word was invested with the authority of her position.

"Not the details, you understand. Merely a suggestion that all was not well.

One does hate to speak of such things, but in the present climate, I suppose one must be cautious about one's associations. "

The present climate. The phrase was elegant in its ambiguity.

It could mean the economic climate, the political climate, the moral climate.

What it actually meant was the climate created by Penelope's accusation: a climate in which association with the Ashfords had suddenly become a liability, because a woman who accused a countess of murder without evidence was either dangerously reckless or dangerously well-informed, and either way, she was dangerous, and the people around her were at risk of contamination.

"And young Mr. Ashford," continued Mrs. Fanshawe, lowering her voice with the elaborate discretion of someone who is about to say something indiscreet and wants to be seen to be reluctant about it.

"I am told his gambling has become quite beyond the pale.

Thousands of pounds. At Crockford's, if you please.

The kind of debts that cannot be managed, if you take my meaning.

The kind that lead to very unfortunate consequences. "

Another pause. Longer this time. The women exchanged glances, and the glances contained a shared understanding that was older than language, the understanding that certain families were sound and certain families were not, and that the Ashfords, who had been teetering on the edge of respectability for a decade, had just been pushed over it by their own matriarch's recklessness.

I moved through the room, listening. The same themes recurred in every conversation I overheard.

Lord Ashford's financial embarrassments.

Young Mr. Ashford's gambling debts. The suggestion that the Ashford name was not what it had been, that the family's position in society rested on foundations that were far less solid than anyone had previously supposed.

The information was not, in itself, scandalous.

Financial difficulties were common enough among the aristocracy; half the families in London were leveraged to within an inch of their lives, and gambling debts were as endemic among young men as colds in winter.

What was scandalous was not the information but its dissemination.

These were private matters. They were the kind of matters that everyone knew about and no one discussed, because the social contract required that such things remain within the family, sealed behind the polite fiction that everyone was prosperous and everything was well.

By releasing them into the public sphere, Cecilia had not merely damaged Penelope's reputation; she had signalled that the seal of protection that had surrounded the Ashford name was broken, and that breaking it was permissible, and that anyone who wished to discuss the Ashfords' private affairs could now do so without consequence.

In society, privacy is power. The woman whose private affairs are known to everyone is a woman without defences, and a woman without defences is a woman who can be approached, questioned, pressed, and ultimately abandoned, because no one will risk their own position to protect a person whose protection has been publicly withdrawn.

Penelope's accusation had been an attempt to break Cecilia's privacy, to expose her secrets to the light.

Cecilia's response had been to break Penelope's privacy first, and more thoroughly, and with a precision that made Penelope's clumsy insinuations look like the work of an amateur.

I found Penelope at a quarter to eleven.

She was standing in the anteroom outside the ballroom, alone, holding a fan that she was not using, and her face had the particular quality of a woman who has just realised, in slow and terrible stages, that the ground beneath her feet is not solid.

Her cheeks were flushed, not with the warmth of the room but with something closer to distress, and her eyes, which had been bright and aggressive at the beginning of the evening, were now glassy and unfocused, as though she were seeing the room through a veil that had not been there an hour ago.

She saw me looking at her and stiffened.

She did not know who I was, precisely, though she had seen me at enough social functions to recognise me as someone connected to Cecilia's orbit, and the recognition made her straighten her spine and lift her chin in the posture of defiance that I had observed in her at the Duchess of Malfort's gathering three days ago.

But the defiance was hollow. I could see it in the tension of her jaw, which was set too tightly, and in the whiteness of her knuckles around the fan, which was clasped with a force that suggested she was holding on to something, and the something was not the fan.

"Lady Ashford," I said, because I was near enough to acknowledge her and because not acknowledging her would have been a statement of its own.

"Inspector." She knew my name. Of course she knew my name.

In the three days since her accusation, every society woman in London had made it her business to discover the identity of the detective who had been asking questions about the Blackwood marriages, and Penelope, who had gambled her social standing on that accusation, would have made it her particular business to know everything about me. "Are you enjoying the evening?"

"I am observing it," I said, and the word "observing" was deliberate, because I wanted her to understand that I was not a guest in the way that the other guests were guests, and that my observations were professional rather than social.

She flushed. The flush deepened. "I suppose you are here to watch her work," she said, and her voice had the raw edge of a woman who has been drinking, or who wished she had been drinking, or who was operating in a state of emotional extremity that made alcohol irrelevant.

"I am here because I was invited," I said.

"Yes. Invited. We are all invited. And we all come, and we all smile, and we all pretend that nothing is happening while she destroys everything she touches.

" Penelope's voice rose, and then she caught herself, pressing her lips together and looking past me toward the ballroom, where the music was playing and the dancers were turning and the candles were burning as though nothing at all was wrong.

"I made a mistake," she said, and the admission was so unexpected, so raw, that I was momentarily disarmed by it.

"What kind of mistake?"

"The kind that cannot be unmade. I spoke, Inspector. I spoke in a drawing room full of women, and I said what everyone was thinking, and I believed that the truth would be enough." She laughed, and the laugh was bitter and brief. "The truth is never enough. Not in this world. Not against her."

I said nothing. I had no sympathy to offer and no counsel to give, and even if I had, Penelope Ashford was not a woman I wished to help.

Her accusation had been motivated by jealousy and spite, not by justice, and the damage she had hoped to inflict upon Cecilia was damage I wanted to inflict myself, through different means and for different reasons.

But watching her standing there, alone in the anteroom with her fan and her flushed cheeks and her dawning comprehension of the magnitude of her error, I felt something that was not quite sympathy and not quite satisfaction but something adjacent to both, the recognition of a fellow combatant who had underestimated the enemy and was now paying the price.

Penelope straightened her spine again, but the gesture was weaker this time, the reflexive response of a woman who has spent fifty years maintaining her posture through sheer force of will and who is discovering, for the first time, that will is not always enough.

"You are watching her," she said. "You have been watching her for months. You know what she is."

"I know what I suspect," I said.
