The invitations were dispatched on the morning of the twenty-second of May.
The paper was my personal stationery, the heavy cream stock with the Blackwood crest embossed at the top, and the ink was the particular shade of blue-black that I favoured for formal correspondence.
Each invitation was handwritten, not engraved, because handwriting communicates a personal investment that engraving does not, and the personal investment was part of the strategy, a signal to each recipient that the invitation was not a generic social obligation but a specific honour, extended by a specific person, and that declining it would constitute not merely a social slight but a personal rejection.
Sebastian's invitation was delivered by hand, by Dorothea, who was instructed to wait for a response.
The waiting was a power play, a demonstration that the invitation was not a casual matter but a summons, and the summons was, in its own way, a statement of confidence: I was inviting the detective who was investigating me to my home, to my table, to the most intimate social setting that Victorian society provided, and I was doing so with the confidence of a person who knew that the invitation could not be refused, because refusing it would reveal a weakness — the inability to face me on my own territory — that Sebastian could not afford to reveal.
Lord and Lady Pemberton accepted immediately, as I had anticipated.
The Marchioness of Tavistock accepted with the particular grace of a woman who understands that acceptance is a social obligation and that obligations exist to be fulfilled.
The other guests accepted, and the acceptances were noted in my engagement book, and the shape of the evening began to solidify from the fluid uncertainty of possibility into the fixed geometry of a plan.
The seating arrangement was the next consideration.
In a Victorian dinner party, the seating arrangement is a map of social relationships, a diagram of alliances and animosities, a statement of who matters and who does not, and I approached the arrangement with the same precision I brought to every other element of the operation.
I would sit at the head of the table, as hostess.
The government official — assuming he accepted the invitation, which I had not yet confirmed — would sit to my right, the position of honour, because honouring a potential adversary is a gesture of confidence that communicates, more effectively than any verbal statement, the message that one is not threatened.
Sebastian would sit across from me, at the opposite end of the table, where I could observe him without obvious attention and where his own observations would be limited by the distance and the intervening guests.
Lord Pemberton would sit beside the official, providing social ballast and a buffer against direct interrogation.
Lady Pemberton would sit beside Sebastian, performing the same function from the opposite direction.
The remaining seats would be filled according to the dynamics of social compatibility and strategic utility.
The menu was the next element. Food, in a dinner party of this kind, is not merely sustenance; it is communication, and the menu I planned was designed to communicate a specific set of messages.
The first course — a clear consommé, followed by a delicate fish preparation — would establish the tone of the evening: refined, unhurried, and controlled.
The second course — a saddle of lamb with the appropriate accompaniments — would signal substance and competence, the mark of a household that functions with efficiency and attention to detail.
The third course — a syllabub of cream and sherry and lemon rind — would introduce a note of lightness, a reminder that the evening, despite its underlying tensions, was a social occasion and not an interrogation.
The wines would be selected with the same precision: a dry sherry for the reception, a white Burgundy with the fish, a claret with the lamb, a champagne with the ices, and a port for the gentlemen's withdrawal, each wine chosen not for its quality alone but for its capacity to facilitate conversation, to loosen tongues, and to create the particular atmosphere of relaxed formality that is the most productive environment for the extraction of information.
The arrangements consumed three days. Three days of correspondence, of consultation with the cook and the butler, of adjustments to the seating plan and the menu and the timing of each course.
Three days in which I also sat beside Edmund's bed for several hours each morning, holding his hand, reading to him, watching him draw, and allowing myself, in the privacy of his room, to experience the particular quality of calm that his presence produced in me, a calm that was not the calm of calculation but the calm of proximity to the one thing in the world that I did not need to manage.
Edmund was improving. The fracture was healing.
The concussion had produced no lasting effects.
He was still confined to his room, still on a restricted diet, still under the care of Dr. Hale, who had been persuaded, through a combination of financial incentive and professional flattery, to attend Edmund personally rather than sending his assistant.
But his spirits were good, and his drawings were, as always, remarkable in their own way — not remarkable for their technical skill, which was limited, but for their quality of unselfconscious observation, the way they captured the essence of a thing — a dog, a tree, the view from his window — without the interference of ego or intention.
I watched him draw, and I thought, not for the first time, that Edmund's mind, in its simplicity, was closer to truth than my own, because it did not edit, did not calculate, did not transform the world into a reflection of its own strategies, but merely received it, as a mirror receives light, and reflected it back with a fidelity that my more sophisticated mind could never achieve.
On the evening of the twenty-third, the day before the dinner party, I was in my study, reviewing the final arrangements, when Dorothea brought me a note.
The note was from Sebastian, delivered by a messenger, and it was brief: "I shall attend.
" Three words, written in the direct, unadorned hand that characterised all his correspondence.
No pleasantries. No conditions. No expressions of pleasure or reluctance.
Just the statement of his intention to be present, communicated with the economical precision of a man who uses words only when they are necessary and discards them as soon as they have served their purpose.
I placed the note on my desk and looked at it, and the three words — I shall attend — were, I understood, not merely a response to an invitation but a declaration of intent.
Sebastian was coming to my house. He was coming to my table.
He was entering my territory, not as an investigator pursuing a suspect, but as a guest accepting the hospitality of his hostess, and the shift in the dynamic was significant, because it placed me in the position of power that I had occupied in every previous encounter and that I intended to occupy in this one.
But the shift was also dangerous, because the dinner party was not, as Sebastian would certainly recognise, a social event.
It was a battleground, and the battle that would be fought on it would determine the outcome of the war that had been waged between us for five months.
The government official, if he came, would bring with him the authority of the state, an authority that exceeded anything I could counter through social manipulation or strategic positioning.
Sebastian would bring his evidence, his certainty, and the moral authority of a man who had been right all along and who was about to have his rightness validated by the highest levels of government.
And I would bring — what? The same tools I had always brought: composure, control, the capacity to read a room and direct its conversations, the ability to perform with a precision that no one in my experience could match.
The tools had served me well. Three marriages, three deaths, an earldom, a fortune, and the destruction of everyone who had opposed me: the tools had produced all of this, and they would, I was confident, produce whatever outcome the dinner party required.
But beneath the confidence, in the mental compartment where I kept the things I did not wish to examine, there was a crack, a fissure, a small but persistent awareness that the dinner party was different from every previous engagement, because the stakes were not merely strategic but existential.
If I failed — if the government official possessed evidence that could not be managed, if Sebastian had provided him with information that exceeded what I knew he had, if the institutional machinery of the state proved more powerful than the social machinery I had mastered — the consequences would not be social embarrassment or professional inconvenience but the destruction of everything I had built.
I put Sebastian's note in the drawer of my desk and turned off the lamp and went to Edmund's room.
He was awake, propped against his pillows with his drawing board on his lap, working on a picture of the garden as seen from his window.
The drawing was, as always, precise in its observation and charming in its simplicity, and I sat beside his bed and watched him work, and the watching was, as it always was, the only activity in my life that did not serve a strategic purpose, and the absence of strategic purpose was, I understood with a clarity that I did not welcome, the closest thing my mind could produce to peace.
"Cecilia," he said, without looking up from his drawing. "There is going to be a dinner."
"Yes, Edmund. Tomorrow evening."
"Will you be there?"
"I will be there. I am the hostess."
"Good." He added a line to his drawing, a line that represented, I think, the branch of the lilac tree outside his window. "I do not like it when you are not here."
The statement was simple, direct, and utterly without complexity, and it was, I recognised, the most honest thing that anyone had said to me in the five months since Sebastian Aldric had first appeared at my door with his questions about my husband's death.
Edmund did not perform. Edmund did not calculate.
Edmund did not say things because they served a purpose or produced a strategic advantage.
He said things because they were true, and the truth was a quality so foreign to my experience that each encounter with it produced in me a sensation that I could not classify, a sensation that was not discomfort and not pleasure but something adjacent to both, something that existed in the space between the emotions I could perform and the emotions I could not feel.
"I will be here for you," I said, and the words were not a performance, because Edmund was the one person for whom I did not perform, and the absence of performance was, in its own way, the most intimate act of which I was capable.
He smiled. His smile was the smile of a person who trusts completely and who has no reason to doubt that the trust will be honoured, and the smile was, I knew, the thing that I would carry with me into the dinner party, the image that I would hold in my mind when the conversation turned to evidence and accusation and the machinery of the state, and the image would be my anchor, my reminder of what I was fighting for, not because I loved Edmund — I did not, could not, had never been capable of that particular emotion — but because he was mine, and what was mine I would protect with every resource at my command, including, if necessary, the performance of a lifetime.
I kissed his forehead and turned down the lamp and left his room, and I walked through the darkened house to my study, and I opened the drawer and took out Sebastian's note and read it again, the three words in the dark, and I thought about the dinner party and the guests and the seating arrangement and the menu and the wines, and I thought about the government official whose name I did not know and whose intentions I could not predict, and I thought about Sebastian, who would sit across the table from me with his dark eyes and his scarred jaw and his terrible, inconvenient certainty, and I thought about the thing I had said to him in the drawing room, the thing that was the most honest statement I had ever made, and I thought about the fact that the honesty had been a mistake, because honesty, in my experience, was never strategic, and a statement that was not strategic was a statement that could be used against me, and the using was, I was quite certain, exactly what Sebastian intended to do with it.
I put the note back in the drawer and turned off the lamp and went to my bedroom and stood at the window and looked out at the square, where the gas lamps were burning and the trees were dark against the lightening sky, and I understood, with the precision that was the one faculty that had never failed me, that the dinner party was not merely the next engagement in a long campaign.
It was the engagement. The one that would determine everything.
The one that would either confirm my mastery of the machinery of society or demonstrate, in the most public and irreversible way, that the machinery had, at last, been turned against me.
And I was ready. Or I was not ready. And the not-knowing was the most dangerous variable in the equation, because readiness, in the kind of confrontation I was facing, was not a matter of preparation but of character, and character was, I had always understood, the one thing that could not be performed.
I closed the curtains and went to bed and lay in the dark and listened to the house settle around me, the creaking of floorboards and the ticking of clocks and the distant sounds of the city beyond the walls, and I did not sleep, because sleep was a luxury that I could not afford on the night before the most important engagement of my life, and I planned, and planned, and planned, and somewhere in the planning, the night passed, and the morning came, and the dinner party was today.
