Chapter 18 #2

"And then, true to your predictable, lore-obsessed nature," Evander sighed, smoothing a non-existent wrinkle from his pristine sleeve, "you ran exactly where I knew you would run.

You found the abandoned Aether-Gate. You provided the biometric spark.

And you walked directly into my sterilization chamber, perfectly aged and ready for extraction. "

The guilt crushed Drystan with the weight of a collapsing mountain.

He slowly turned his head to look at Nymeria.

The Shadow-Weaver was broken. Her beautiful, cynical resilience had been ground into dust. Her dusky twilight skin was burned and blistering.

Her appealing, gothic uniform was a shredded, filthy ruin.

She had trusted him. She had believed he was a Valedictorian of the dark, a monster capable of dethroning the gods.

Instead, he was just a rat that had successfully navigated the maze to find the poison cheese.

"She has nothing to do with this," Drystan wheezed. The words tore his throat apart, but he forced them out, driven by a desperate, agonizing need to salvage a single fraction of his shredded humanity. "Let her go."

Evander laughed. It was a bright, flawless sound that contained no joy, only a chilling, clinical superiority.

"She is an outcast of the Umbral caste. Her existence is an affront to the Light-Weave," Evander stated, finally looking down at the trembling girl draped over Drystan’s legs.

"But she is... aesthetically unique. The localized juxtaposition of her twilight resonance and her rather excessive physical proportions is an interesting anomaly in itself. "

Evander crouched down, his projected face hovering just inches above Nymeria’s. She flinched violently, squeezing her amber eyes shut.

"I am a generous architect," Evander murmured. He looked back to Drystan. "I will offer you a choice, anomaly."

The golden gargoyle standing in the corner of the room suddenly shifted. Its heavy marble wings scraped against the iron wall. It took a single, silent step forward, the liquid gold veins pulsing with renewed, lethal intent.

"Your Glitched Weave-Interface is fused to your necrotic left arm," Evander explained, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "I can have the gargoyle rip it from your shoulder. But forced extraction damages the biological integrity of the code. The aether-threads degrade under physical trauma."

Evander stood up, towering over them in his pristine, flawless glory.

"Or, you can surrender it willingly."

Drystan stared up at the projection. His right hand twitched, the shredded, blood-crusted palm scraping uselessly against the scorching iron floor.

"Transfer the primary rights of your interface to my signature," Evander demanded. "Relinquish the corrupted code without resistance. Let the system rewrite your glitch into my marrow smoothly."

"And if I do?" Drystan coughed, another surge of hot blood spilling over his chin.

"If you do, I will ensure your death is instantaneous.

I will deactivate the localized pain receptors in your cortex before I drain you," Evander offered smoothly.

"And I will spare the Shadow-Weaver. I will keep her in the Apex Spire.

She will make a fascinating localized trophy.

A living, breathing monument to the day I broke the level cap. "

Evander’s summer-sky eyes narrowed, the clinical mask slipping just a fraction to reveal the terrifying, absolute sadism underneath.

"But if you resist," Evander whispered, his voice dropping into a deadly, vibrating cadence.

"If you make me take it by force... I will have the gargoyle start with her.

I will make you watch as it slowly crushes her skull against the iron plates.

I will let you listen to her scream while your punctured lung slowly fills with your own blood. "

The ultimatum hung in the superheated air.

It was a perfectly constructed, inescapable checkmate. The corporate accountant’s logic could not find a flaw. There was no hidden passage. There was no unexpected cache of mana-resin. There was no kinetic blast left in his ruined, dead arm.

He was out of pieces.

Drystan Harrow looked at Nymeria. She opened her glowing amber eyes. They were filled with tears, her face a canvas of soot, burns, and absolute despair. She slowly shook her head, a microscopic, desperate plea. Don't give it to him.

But the valedictorian knew the truth. They were dead either way. At least surrender offered her breath. At least surrender offered her a chance to live, even as a prisoner in a golden cage.

Drystan closed his eyes. The rage that had fueled him through the Caldera, the icy, sociopathic defiance that had allowed him to drop a mountain on an army, evaporated entirely. It was replaced by a cold, hollow vacuum of total defeat.

He had tried to fight the Script, and the Script had broken his spine.

"I..." Drystan started, his voice a pathetic, gurgling rasp.

He forced his bleeding right hand up. He didn't reach for a weapon. He reached blindly toward the empty, scorching air, a gesture of absolute capitulation.

"I surrender."

The words tasted like bile. They were the most cowardly, humiliating syllables he had ever uttered, vastly worse than anything he had felt in his previous life. He was submitting to the slaughterhouse.

"Excellent," Evander smiled, a bright, chilling flash of white teeth.

The hologram flickered.

"The Vanguard will arrive to collect you shortly. Try not to bleed out before I get there. The code requires a living host."

The hard-light projection of Evander Cross violently collapsed, dissolving back into the superheated white fog of the sterilization chamber.

Drystan’s right hand fell back to the iron floor with a heavy, wet slap.

He lay there, his breath rattling in his ruined chest, his icy gray eyes staring blankly into the blinding white mist. The golden gargoyle remained completely motionless in the corner, a silent, marble warden ensuring the livestock didn't spoil before the butcher arrived.

The Doomed Mid-Boss had lost, and the darkness finally claimed his vision.
