Chapter 21

Wes did not, when she sat down beside him on the bench, take her hand.
He had decided, on the long climb up the concrete stair when he had heard her flat ankle boots come into the lobby, that the next thing was not, in his hands.
The next thing was in hers. He had spent ninety minutes waiting for her on a bench in the dark and he could wait another minute.
He could wait several minutes. He was, by this point in his life, the kind of man who could wait.
She sat.
She wrapped both hands around the cold paper cup and did not drink it.
She set it down on the bench between them.
She did not, for one whole minute, speak.
He waited.
He looked, while he waited, at the dim of the mezzanine.
The rink floor below was being cleared by Bridget Halligan’s cousins in catering blacks.
Marin Pell had gone. Pete had gone. Joanna had gone — Joanna had walked out of the rink at five past ten with the bridge agreement in a manila envelope in her tote bag, and she had not, in walking out, looked at any human being in the building, because Joanna had decided, at the table, that she was going to make it to her own kitchen before she let herself feel any further thing, and Joanna had made it.
Theo had gone. Theo had been in the back of the room for the speech.
Theo had clapped, briefly, with his hands together at chest height.
Theo had not, after the speech, come to Wes.
Theo had not come to Ada. Theo had eaten the chowder.
Theo had nodded once to Frenchie. Theo had put on his coat at nine-thirty and walked out into the parking lot, and Wes had not, that night, seen him again.
The string trio was packing up.
The string of small white lights along the boards was at its lowest setting.
The mezzanine corner was, for the first time in three hours, quiet.
Ada, after a long beat, said, “The tea is cold.”
“Yes.”
“Why did you make it.”
“Because I made it before I knew whether I was staying,” he said. “And then I was ashamed of it. A man should not set a table he has not been invited to. I have been doing that, in this building, for a year and a half. I told myself this week I was going to stop.”
“Wes.”
“Yes.”
She turned, slightly, on the bench, to face him.
She did not, in turning, take his hand. She did not, in turning, lean toward him. She turned on the bench like a person who was about to say a thing to another person in a room, and she did the saying carefully, in her own speaking voice, the voice she used in the lobby at six-forty-five.
“You are invited,” she said. “That is the first thing. Here is the second. Wes — I am in love with you.”
He did not, for one half-second, do anything.
Then he said, very quietly, “Ada.”
“Yes.”
“I — I am — I am going to need you to give me one beat.”
“Yes.”
He gave himself the beat.
He did not, in the beat, hide his face. He let his face do what it was going to do.
His face, in the dim of the mezzanine, did a thing that was — that was very close to the thing it had done in the booth at the Penalty Box on Wednesday morning, which was the small careful holding of a face that was about to spill in public.
The mezzanine, this time, was not public.
The mezzanine was — the mezzanine was them.
He let his face spill.
He let it for a count of about six.
Then he took a long breath in, and let it out, and said, “Ada. I think I started falling for you about fifteen months ago. I did not — I did not have the word for it at the time. I have the word now.”
“Wes.”
“There was a Wednesday morning in November, the year before last. You taught a class of six-year-olds how to fall like soft potatoes, with the bright clean face you always teach in. At the end of the class Mira’s father said the thing he sometimes says — that some kids are just slow.
And you turned to him and said, very softly, Mira is not slow, Steve.
Mira is paying attention. She pays more attention to her own body in one hour than I did in my whole third year of training.
You can be proud of her without comparing her.
He went quiet. He never said it again in my hearing.
I stood in the equipment closet after that class, and I put the word on the thing I had been feeling for six months.
The word was love. I have not said it out loud about you to a single person since.
I am saying it for the first time now, in this corner, to you.
“I love you, Ada. I am — I am very glad to be saying it.”
She did not answer.
She did not answer because her hand, in her lap, had risen very slowly and gone to her own mouth, and her eyes had gone very bright in the dim, and her shoulders had, in the dim, very slightly trembled.
She did not, in the mezzanine, cry.
She had paid the night everything it was owed already.
She let her hand come down from her mouth.
She said, very quietly, “Wes. I love you on the bench. I love you in the booth at the Penalty Box. I love you in a car with a defrost that does not work. I love you because you are the man who asks. The word is just love. I love you.”
She had, in the speaking, not looked away from his face.
She did not, now, look away.
He did not, this time, take a beat.
He said, very low, “Ada. Come here.”
She came.
She did not, in coming, perform any motion she had performed for any camera. She put her hands on his face, in the dim of the mezzanine, and she let her forehead, very gently, come to rest on his forehead, and she kissed him.
It was a long kiss, unhurried and warm, with a future in it.
It left both of them, on the bench, breathing slightly out of rhythm, and a little embarrassed about the breathing, and not at all embarrassed about the kissing.
He pulled back.
He kept her hands.
He pressed his forehead against hers, again, the way he had on Thursday, and this time the pressing was not the careful tenderness of two people who had just done a forbidden thing. This time the pressing was the rest of his life.
“Ada,” he said.
“Yes.”
“You are going to be tired for the next week. I am going to be at the lobby door at six-thirty, and I am going to ask you, every morning, what you would like the day to be. That is the whole plan. I will ask.”
“Wes.”
“Yes.”
“I am going to take my notebook to Joanna in March. I am going to ask you to be in some of the meetings with me when I do.”
“I am going to be in the meetings,” he said. “The campaign is over. The team is not.”
“One more thing. I almost said something on the stage tonight, before I lost my nerve. I almost said Wes Berglund is the way I know the building is alive. I did not say it, because it was the wrong sentence, and I have the right one now.
“You are not the building, Wes. You are not the bucket, or the door, or the thermostat. You are the person I look for after all of that. The building took me back. You are the person I am choosing. I love the building. I am in love with you. The man. Not the function. The man.”
He held her hands.
He did not speak.
He did not need to.
He breathed.
She breathed.
Below them the catering crew had killed the floor lights, and the mezzanine had gone darker still, down to the harbor-glow off the small high window and the red blink of the exit sign over the stair.
The building had stopped performing for the night.
What was left was the tick of the cooling compressor and the wind on the storm glass and, under it, the two of them not in a hurry.
Wes said, after a long count, very quietly, “Ada.”
“Yes.”
“Will you come home with me. Not for that. For tea on my couch, in my apartment over Frank Nakamura’s hardware store, with the heater on and the harbor turning the color of pencil lead through the window.
I would like to take you home tonight, the way a person takes a person home.
I would not like to send you back to Pillsbury Street alone after the speech you gave.
You can leave whenever. You can stay. You can decide.
I am only asking, Ada. I am asking you to come home with me. ”
“Wes.”
“Yes.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“Wes.”
“Yes.”
“Walk me down the stair. Slowly. My right hip has been a project for three hours.”
“Yes.”
He stood.
He held out his hand.
She took it.
He walked her, very slowly, down the long concrete stair from the mezzanine corner to the lobby below.
She held his hand at the rail with one hand and his elbow with the other, and she descended at her own pace, and he matched her, and he did not, all the way down, say a single word about her hip, because she had not, in the moment, asked him to.
In the lobby Bridget Halligan was holding their coats.
Bridget did not say a single thing.
Bridget handed Ada her coat. Bridget handed Wes his coat. Bridget gave them, between the two coats, a single small flat look that was as close as Bridget Halligan, in her entire life, was ever going to come to I told you so.
“Bridget,” Wes said.
“Wessie.”
“Goodnight, Bridge.”
“Goodnight, Wes. Goodnight, Ada.”
“Goodnight, Bridge.”
They walked out into the parking lot, in their coats.
The night was — the night was the same cold dry winter night the night had been when they had walked out of the rec center a week ago, but the air, tonight, had a different shape inside Ada’s chest. The cold was, tonight, simply cold. The cold was the thing the world did in February.
He held her hand.
She held his.
They got into his truck. He turned the heater up to its highest setting. The defrost worked, this time, because the truck was a goalie’s truck and was, in its own quiet way, more reliable than any rental sedan Bree at the counter had ever issued him.
They drove the four blocks to Frank Nakamura’s hardware store.
They went up the back stairs.
He unlocked his apartment door.
He held the door for her.
She came inside, in her dress the color of a winter sky, into a small clean apartment with one good window facing the harbor, and a couch the color of a paper bag, and a kitchen counter with a kettle on it.
He put the kettle on.
He brought her tea.
They drank it on the couch.
The harbor turned, slowly, the color of pencil lead.
They sat together with their feet up on the small wooden trunk Wes used as a coffee table, and they did not, that night, talk much.
They watched the lights of the late ferry pull out toward Tidewater Island.
They drank two cups of tea each. He put on, after the second cup, a record on the small record player his mother had given him for his last birthday, and the record was an old recording of a piano and a single soft cello, and Ada laughed once into her cup, and Wes did not, this time, pretend not to have known he was doing it.
She stayed on the couch.
He, very deliberately, set her up with a folded blanket and a pillow on the couch, and brought her a glass of water for the night, and showed her where the bathroom was.
He kissed her, once, on the forehead at the doorway of his bedroom — slow and warm and entirely closed-door — and said, very quietly, goodnight, Halloran, and went to bed in his own room with the door closed.
She slept on his couch for nine hours.
She dreamed once.
In the morning he was at the kitchen counter in a worn-out sweatshirt with a coffee, and the harbor outside the good window was the color of weak tea, and she sat up on the couch in her dress, with her hair a small soft mess, and she said, in the lobby voice she had been using all her life, good morning, Berglund.
He said, good morning, Halloran.
He poured a second cup.
He lifted it slightly in her direction.
“Halloran. Still allowed?”
She smiled into the blanket.
“Berglund. This one is grandfathered in.”
He brought it to the couch.
It was — of course it was — oat milk, two sugars, hot.
She drank it.
