ELOWEN
The power moves through me like a tide that forgot it was supposed to stop at the shore.
That's the closest I can get to describing it.
Not painful, which is almost worse, because pain has edges and this doesn't. It's total and directional and it knows exactly where it's going, which is through me and into the world, and the only thing standing between the Forest God's full manifestation and the completion of that journey is whatever I can hold together at the center of myself while everything around that center gets pressed very hard from all directions simultaneously.
I've been braced for this since the ritual activated.
Braced is the wrong word. Braced implies resistance and Maris's voice is in my head from a session two weeks ago, specific and clear.
Don't brace against a current that size.
You'll exhaust yourself and it will move you anyway.
Find the lateral. She was talking about a ward that was larger than I could hold frontally.
The principle is the same. I find the lateral.
The suppression circle collapsed when the ritual hit full activation, the anchor points redirected into the ritual's own structure, which means my full magical capacity is back and the power moving through me is now moving through that full capacity rather than the reduced version the circle was managing.
It should make this harder. Instead it gives me more to work with, more of myself present in the space the power is trying to occupy.
I don't fight it out.
I fight it inward.
The distinction is everything. My grandmother's documentation on the vessels who survived comes back to me.
They met the power as participants. They didn't reject it and they didn't surrender to it.
They found the place where their own will and the god's power could occupy the same space without one consuming the other.
The place where that is possible, I discovered in the early morning sessions I ran without telling anyone, is the mark itself.
The mark is the interface. It was designed as a channel for the god's power to move through, but a channel has two directions, and the direction the ritual is using is outward, god through vessel into world.
What the ritual didn't account for, what Cyris's two hundred years of preparation didn't account for, is a vessel who spent three weeks learning to move through that channel in both directions.
My grandmother left me a roadmap.
I start using it.
The power is enormous and the inward redirection is like trying to turn a river with my hands, not impossible but requiring every piece of my attention and more strength than I've used for anything.
The mark blazes up my entire arm and past my shoulder and I can feel it at the base of my skull and I hold the direction of it, inward, inward, binding rather than releasing, and the ritual structure around me begins to register the discrepancy between what it's designed to do and what is actually happening.
The ley line under the shrine spikes.
Then Kaedric is at the hollow's edge.
I see him through the chaos of the ritual's light and the battle happening at the shrine's outer ring, and what moves through the mate bond when our eyes meet is not a word and not a feeling exactly. It's a signal. Specific and clear. I'm here. I see you. I'm not leaving.
It doesn't break my concentration. It deepens it.
This is the thing about the mate bond that I've been turning over since the night on the creek path when I first understood what it was.
It doesn't pull me toward him the way the mark pulls toward the shrine or the ritual pulls toward manifestation.
It doesn't override. It anchors. There's a difference between a thing that pulls you and a thing that holds you in place, and what the mate bond does, what it has been doing since the night of the patrol ambush when it settled into something real between us, is hold me exactly where I am.
I use it. I let it do what it does.
The redirection deepens.
The power is still moving through me, still vast and still old and still larger than anything I've worked with.
The Forest God is not being invited into the world.
It's being invited to stay in me, in the mark, in the specific space between the power and the person that my grandmother spent seven generations of careful bloodline work creating.
The ritual structure begins to fracture.
Not explosively. The fracture is internal, the designed outcome and the actual outcome diverging past the point where the ritual's construction can hold them both, and I can feel the moment approaching where I'm going to have to commit completely to the redirection, no partial measures, no pulling back, all of myself into the channel and the direction I've chosen and the outcome I'm refusing to give up.
It's going to be the hardest thing I've ever done.
I know that with the same certainty I know the mark on my wrist and the ground under my feet and the signal moving through the mate bond from the edge of the hollow where Kaedric is fighting his way toward me.
I take one breath that is entirely mine.
I stop resisting and I start.
