Chapter Twenty-Two – Holly

The air crackled and popped as the bear disappeared, replaced instantly by Daniel, fully clothed and standing before her in the snow. Holly blinked, her mind struggling to process what she had just witnessed, yet her heart had no such hesitation.

“It’s really you,” she whispered, her voice catching on the words.

Daniel stood perfectly still, his eyes never leaving hers. The mountain wind swept between them, carrying snowflakes that caught in his hair, on his shoulders, melting from the warmth of him.

Holly didn’t step back. Instead, she moved closer, her boots sinking in the snow as she crossed the small distance between them. Her gloved hand reached up to touch his face, tracing the line of his jaw that moments ago had been covered in thick fur.

“You’re not afraid?” Daniel’s voice was rough, barely audible over the wind.

“No,” Holly said, and she meant it. “I could never be afraid of you.”

Daniel’s expression changed, the tension melting away. He covered her hand with his own, pressing it more firmly against his cheek, his eyes closing briefly as if memorizing her touch.

“I thought when you saw...” he began.

“That I’d run?” Holly shook her head. “I’m done running.”

A shiver ran through her that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with the cold seeping through her boots. Daniel noticed immediately, his arm wrapping around her shoulders.

“You’re freezing,” he said, glancing at the darkening sky. “Let’s get out of the cold.”

Holly nodded, suddenly aware of the snow coming heavier now. She took his hand, their fingers intertwining naturally as she led him toward her car.

“My car has better heating,” she explained, fumbling with the keys. Her hands trembled, not from fear but from the overwhelming certainty filling her chest. This was right. He was right.

The engine sparked to life, and Holly cranked the heater to full blast. Warm air flowed through the vents as Daniel settled into the passenger seat beside her. The small space immediately felt intimate, filled with his presence, his scent, and the undeniable energy between them.

“So this is my car,” Holly said, a smile tugging at her lips as she remembered that first night, stranded in the snow. “Except this time, I’m not lost.”

“No,” Daniel agreed, reaching across to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. “You’re found.”

His touch lingered, fingers trailing along her cheek, down to her jaw. Holly leaned into his palm, her eyes never leaving his. The space between them seemed to shrink, the car growing warmer by the second.

“When did you know?” she whispered.

“Before we met,” Daniel murmured. “I sensed you before I saw you, and I knew immediately. You’re my mate, Holly.”

“Mate,” she repeated, testing the word on her tongue. It sounded right, felt right in a way that ‘fiancé’ or ‘boyfriend’ never had.

“It’s why everything between us felt so…”

“Inevitable,” Holly finished for him. She leaned closer, no longer able to bear even that small distance between them.

Daniel’s hand slid to the back of her neck, drawing her toward him.

Their lips met in a kiss that started gently but quickly deepened, carrying all the longing and desire that had built between them.

Holly sighed against his mouth, her hands finding their way to his chest, feeling the solid heartbeat beneath his coat.

“We should move to the back,” she whispered against his lips. “More room.”

Daniel nodded, his eyes darkening with desire. They broke apart reluctantly, both breathless as they climbed awkwardly over the center console into the back seat. Holly caught her sleeve on the gearshift, and Daniel bumped his head on the roof, which sent them both into fits of laughter.

“Very graceful,” Holly giggled, tugging him down beside her.

“Bears are known for their elegance,” Daniel replied with a grin before capturing her lips again.

Holly reached behind her, fumbling for the blanket she kept on the back shelf. She pulled it free, draping it over them as Daniel’s hands found their way beneath her sweater. His fingers were warm against her skin, tracing patterns up her sides that made her shiver with anticipation.

“Is this okay?” he asked, pausing at the edge of her bra.

“More than okay,” Holly breathed, arching into his touch.

His hands moved higher, cupping her breasts through the thin fabric of her bra. Holly gasped as his thumbs brushed over her nipples, sending sparks of pleasure down her spine. She wanted more, wanted his skin against hers, wanted to feel all of him.

Sitting up, she slipped off her coat and then tugged at the hem of her sweater, struggling to pull it over her head in the confined space. Daniel helped, his fingers brushing against her exposed skin. The cold air hit her for just a moment before his hands were there again, warming her.

“You’re beautiful,” he whispered, his eyes taking in every inch of her.

Holly reached for him, fumbling with the buttons of his shirt. “Your turn.”

Together they undressed each other, laughing softly at the awkwardness of it, at elbows knocking against windows and knees bumping the back of the front seats. But beneath the laughter was a current of desire that grew stronger with each piece of clothing removed.

When they were finally naked, Daniel pulled the blanket over them, creating a cocoon of warmth against the winter chill beyond the windows. Holly’s hands explored his chest, tracing the contours of muscle, the surprising softness of the hair that grew there.

Daniel lowered his head, pressing kisses along her collarbone, down to the swell of her breast. His tongue circled her nipple before drawing it into his mouth, and Holly gasped, her back arching off the seat. Her fingers tangled in his hair, holding him to her as pleasure coursed through her body.

His other hand slid down her stomach, fingers trailing lightly over her skin until they reached her thighs. Holly parted her legs in invitation, a soft moan escaping her as his fingers found her most sensitive spot.

“Daniel,” she breathed, her hips rising to meet his touch.

He stroked her slowly at first, watching her face as he learned what made her gasp, what made her eyes flutter closed. When he slid two fingers inside her, his thumb circling that bundle of nerves, Holly felt herself climbing toward release.

Her hand found his hardness, wrapping around him, stroking in time with his movements. Daniel groaned, his forehead pressing against hers as they breathed the same air, shared the same rhythm.

“I need you,” Holly whispered, guiding him toward her entrance. “Please.”

Daniel positioned himself between her thighs, entering her with exquisite slowness. Holly wrapped her legs around his waist, drawing him deeper, her body stretching to accommodate him. For a moment, they stayed perfectly still, connected in the most intimate way, their eyes locked.

“You’re mine,” Daniel whispered, his voice filled with wonder. “And I’m yours.”

“Yes,” Holly agreed, her heart so full she thought it might burst. “Completely.”

He began to move, setting a slow pace that quickly built as their bodies found their natural rhythm together.

Holly’s hands roamed his back, feeling the play of muscles beneath his skin as he rocked into her.

Each thrust brought her closer to the edge, pleasure building in waves that threatened to overwhelm her.

Daniel’s movements grew more urgent, his hands gripping her hips as he drove deeper. Holly met him thrust for thrust, her body tightening around him as she felt her climax approaching.

“Daniel,” she cried out as pleasure crashed through her, her body arching beneath him.

He followed her over the edge, his release pulsing inside her as he buried his face in her neck, breathing her name.

They lay tangled together afterward, breathing hard, warm despite the cold outside. Daniel pulled the blanket more securely around them, tucking it beneath Holly’s shoulder.

“I’ve never felt anything like that,” Holly murmured, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on his chest.

“That’s the mate bond,” Daniel said, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “It makes everything more intense.”

Holly nestled closer, savoring the weight of his arm around her, the steady beat of his heart beneath her ear. The windows had fogged completely, creating a private world that belonged only to them.

“I can’t believe the last time I drove this car before today, I was running away,” she murmured. “But I’ll never run again.”

Daniel’s hand stroked her hair, his touch gentle. “The moment I saw you in that wedding dress, standing in the snow. You have no idea how hard it was, seeing you there, knowing you were meant for me but were about to marry someone else.”

Holly propped herself up on one elbow to look at him. “We have Andrew to thank for that.”

“Or fate,” Daniel said with a soft smile. “Though I hope someday I’ll see you in a wedding dress again. Because I am going to marry you.” His voice held a teasing note, but his eyes were serious.

“Are you now?” Holly laughed, emotion catching in her throat. “Maybe next time I’ll pick something warmer. With long sleeves. And possibly thermal underwear.”

As their chuckles subsided, a comfortable silence settled between them. Holly traced her fingers along Daniel’s jawline, marveling at how this man—this bear—had completely transformed her life in just a few days.

“I love you,” Holly whispered, the words rising naturally from somewhere deep inside her. They weren’t planned or calculated, just the simple truth that couldn’t be contained any longer.

Daniel replied without hesitation, “I love you too, Holly. I think I’ve loved you from the moment I found you in that snowstorm.”

The confession hung between them, precious and perfect in its simplicity. No grand gestures needed, no dramatic declarations—just the quiet certainty of belonging.

Holly smiled, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heart. “And your kids. And your bakes,” she added, her voice light but sincere. “You’re the perfect package deal.”

Daniel cupped her face in his hands, his touch reverent as his thumbs stroked her cheeks. His expression was so tender it made her breath catch. “That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

Holly tilted her head, her heart beating faster as a question formed in her mind. Something she hadn’t dared to consider until this moment, wrapped in his warmth, surrounded by his love. She swallowed, gathering her courage.

“Do you think you have room for more children?” she whispered.

Daniel’s eyes darkened, and his jaw tensed, the muscles working beneath his skin as emotion swept across his face. When he spoke, his voice was thick with feeling.

“So many more,” he whispered, his hands tightening on her waist. “As many as you want.”

Holly felt tears spring to her eyes, unexpected but welcome. She hadn’t realized how much she wanted this, not just Daniel and his children, but the possibility of expanding their family, of creating something new together.

“Really?” she asked, her voice catching.

“Really,” he confirmed, pulling her closer against his chest. “This really is going to be the best Christmas ever.”

And she had to agree.
