Roseth
The square empties as the sun sinks behind the western ridge.
Vendors pack their stalls. Musicians carry instruments toward the tavern where pre-festival celebrations have already started, voices and laughter spilling into the cooling air.
Vi appears briefly at the forge entrance, eyebrows raised when she sees Khaivor still beside me at the workbench.
"You're not coming to the tavern?" she asks.
"I have work to finish."
Her gaze slides between us with the particular knowing quality I've learned to ignore. "Right. Work." She grins. "Don't work too hard, Rose."
The door closes behind her.
Silence settles over the forge like snowfall. Just the distant sound of celebration carrying across the water, the low crackle of banked coals, the faint chime of silver rings in Khaivor's hair when he moves.
We're alone.
The realization lands differently than it should. My pulse does something unhelpful.
"You don't have to stay," I say, arranging tools that don't need arranging. "The tavern sounds like—"
"I would rather be here."
The words are quiet. Certain. They settle into my chest with surprising weight.
I look up. He's watching me with that focused attention that makes the rest of the world feel secondary. Black-violet eyes catching forge light, reflecting it back in shades I don't have names for.
"Why?" I ask.
"You know why."
"I want to hear you say it."
Something shifts in his expression. Not quite a smile. Something more vulnerable than that.
"I tried not to return this year," he says. "I told myself I would stay in Kantor through autumn. That collecting your bells had become a compulsion rather than necessity. That I was feeding an attachment that served no purpose except prolonging my own isolation."
"What changed your mind?"
"Nothing. I simply couldn't stay away." He moves closer, stopping just beyond arm's reach.
"I tried for years, Roseth. Every autumn I would convince myself not to come.
Then festival season would arrive and I would find myself on the northern road regardless.
Walking toward Bellmere. Toward your stall. Toward you."
My breath catches. "Toward me?"
"It stopped being about the bells years ago." His voice drops lower. "I kept returning because leaving meant not seeing you for another year. Not hearing your voice. Not watching you work with that particular focus you have when you're listening to metal. I told myself it was the bells. I lied."
The forge feels smaller suddenly. Warmer. The air between us charged with something I don't know how to name.
"You never spoke to me," I mention.
"I didn't trust myself to. I already explained that." He replies swiftly. “I thought speaking to you would make leaving impossible."
The confession hangs between us. I should step back. Create distance. Instead I move closer, closing the gap he's maintaining so carefully.
"Maybe," I say quietly, "you should stop trying to leave."
His jaw tightens. "Roseth—"
"You treat yourself like something dangerous.
Like something that needs to be controlled constantly or terrible things will happen.
" I reach up, fingers brushing the edge of his collar where the fabric parts.
His pulse jumps beneath my touch. "What if you're not dangerous? What if you're just afraid?"
"I have reasons to be."
"Of what? Your magic? Your past?" I hold his gaze. "Or of wanting something for yourself?"
His breath shudders. "You don't understand what you're asking."
"Then explain it to me."
"I can't—" He stops. "When I'm near you, everything becomes harder to control. The magic responds to you. To your voice, your heartbeat, the sound of your breathing. Every frequency you create pulls at something inside me. If I stop maintaining control—"
"What happens?" I ask.
"I don't know." The admission costs him. "I have never allowed myself to stop."
I slide my hand up to cup his face. His skin is cool beneath my palm. "Maybe it's time to find out."
"Rose—"
I move on instinct, locking lips with him.
For a moment he remains perfectly still.
His arms come around me with sudden fierce intensity, pulling me against him as though I might disappear if he doesn't hold on. The kiss deepens, turns desperate.
His magic surges—I feel it in the air around us, a low resonant hum that vibrates through my bones. The silver rings in his hair chime wildly. The cooling bells on the workbench begin ringing in response, a cascade of tones that shouldn't be possible without being struck.
He pulls back, breathing hard. "I told you—"
"I don't care." I pull him back in. "Stop holding back."
"If I hurt you—" his words falter.
"You won't."
"You can't know that,” he
"Yes I can." I bring him down to me again, lips brushing his. I kiss him again, softer this time. "Trust yourself, Khaivor. I do."
The last of his restraint shatters.
He kisses me like a man drowning. His hands move to my waist, sliding beneath my work shirt, fingers splaying against bare skin. The touch sends heat flooding through me, pooling beneath my stomach. I gasp against his mouth and the sound appears to undo something fundamental in him.
His magic reacts violently.
Every bell in the forge rings simultaneously—a massive harmonic that rattles the windows and sends tools clattering to the floor. I can feel it against my skin, in my lungs, thrumming through my pulse like a second heartbeat.
He tries to pull away again but I don't let him.
"Don't stop," I breathe against his mouth.
"I can't control—"
"I don't want you to control it."
He makes a sound low in his throat—half surrender, half desperation. His hands tighten on my waist, pulling me harder against him. His heart racing, his breathing ragged.
The magic swells higher, filling the forge with resonance so thick it feels almost tangible.
I slide my hands up his chest, feeling the rapid rise and fall of his breathing beneath my palms. His skin is cool through the fabric but warming rapidly wherever I touch. I find the fastenings of his coat, work them open. He helps, shrugging out of the heavy layers with surprising urgency.
"Rose—" My name breaks on his lips.
"Don't think." I pull him toward the back corner where blankets are piled near the cooling racks—makeshift bedding for nights I've worked too late to walk home. "Just feel."
We sink down together. His hands shake as they move over me, alternating between fierce intensity and unexpected gentleness. He maps my body like he's memorizing it—the curve of my waist, the line of my throat, the ridge of my collarbone.
I work at his remaining clothes while he does the same with mine. Fabric pools around us. Cool air hits my skin followed immediately by the heat of his hands. He traces the burn scars on my forearms with something like reverence.
"Beautiful," he murmurs.
"They're scars."
"They're proof of your work. Your craft." He presses his lips to the largest one. "Everything about you is beautiful."
The words undo something in me.
I drag him down, needing to feel his weight, his skin against mine. He settles over me carefully and I immediately feel his erected organ between my thighs.
I wrap my legs around his waist, eliminating the careful distance he's trying to maintain.
"I'm not fragile," I tell him.
"I know." His forehead rests against mine. "But you're precious."
The tenderness in his voice makes my throat tight as he slips inside of me.
I gasp quietly, clutching his back to fight the overwhelming urge to cry out. He fills me completely, stretching me in ways that blur the line between pleasure and sanity.
We move together slowly at first, learning each other's rhythms. I try holding back the lewd moans but it becomes harder with every passing second.
Each thrust draws new sounds from deep in my chest—sounds I didn't know I could make. The bells continue ringing in waves, matching the building intensity between us, their resonance vibrating through the stone floor beneath my back.
He buries his face in my neck, breathing hard against my skin. "Tell me if it's too much."
"It's not enough." I arch against him, rolling my hips to take him deeper. The movement draws a ragged sound from his throat that makes heat pool low in my belly.
His composure fractures completely.
The careful gentleness gives way to raw need. His hands grip my hips hard enough to bruise, holding me steady as he moves harder, deeper. Each swing punches the air from my lungs. I can feel him everywhere—inside me, around me, consuming every thought until nothing exists except this moment.
The magic explodes outward. Every piece of metal in the forge resonates, creating a harmonic so powerful the stone walls seem to hum.
I cry out and the sound seems to pull him under completely. His control vanishes. He dominates every part of me, his forehead pressed against mine as he makes my body shiver and respond in ways I've never experienced.
Fluid floods between my legs, more than I've ever produced, slicking the space where our bodies join.
I dig my fingers into his shoulders, clinging to him as sensation builds.
“Uhhh… Kha…”His name breaks from my lips in fragments, barely coherent.
He responds with words in a language I don't know, whispered against my skin between ragged breaths.
I can feel his dick throbbing inside me, the thickness pulsing with each pump as the pace intensifies. My body suddenly begins moving on its own, hips rising to meet his, responding to the relentless rhythm that slams against the deepest parts of me. The pressure builds impossibly high.
"Not yet. Don't finish yet," I manage to gasp, and I feel him obey.
His movements slow fractionally, giving me space to climb toward the edge.
My legs begin trembling uncontrollably. I can't think.
I can't feel anything other than his body moving against mine, inside mine, claiming every inch of me.
The climax approaches like a wave gathering height before it crashes. My inner walls flutter and clench around him. He groans—a raw, desperate sound that tells me his control is hanging by a thread.
"I—" His voice breaks as I bite down on his lip, tasting copper and salt. One last powerful thrust and my brain explodes into white light.
"Awww—" The pleasure sips into my veins like wine, burning through every nerve. My toes curl in the air. My back arches so violently I worry something might snap. The world dissolves into pure sensation—heat and pressure and the overwhelming fullness of him buried deep inside me.
Release hits like a bell struck perfectly—one clear tone expanding outward in waves. I feel him follow moments later, his entire body going rigid as he spills inside me with a shuddering gasp. The warmth floods through me, mixing with my own release.
We collapse together, breathing hard, skin slick with sweat despite the cool air. His weight presses me into the blankets. I can notice his heart racing against my ribs, gradually slowing as reality reassembles around us.
The magic peaks and crashes, every bell in the forge ringing in one final massive chord before falling silent.
We collapse together, breathing hard, skin slick with sweat despite the cool air.
Slowly, reality reassembles around us.
The forge is quiet now except for our breathing and the distant celebration still carrying from the tavern. Khaivor's weight presses me into the blankets. I feel his heart racing against my ribs, gradually slowing.
He lifts his head, looking at me with something raw and unguarded in his expression.
"I didn't hurt you?"
"No." I brush damp hair back from his face. "You didn't hurt me."
"The magic—"
"Was beautiful." I cut in sharply.
He stares at me like I've said something incomprehensible.
I cup his face in both hands. "You're allowed to want things, Khaivor. You're allowed to have them."
His eyes close. When he speaks, his voice is barely audible.
"I have never felt peace anywhere. Not in decades.
Not since I was young enough to believe the world was kind.
" He opens his eyes again, holding my gaze.
"But here. With you. In this forge that smells like smoke and metal and you.
This is the only place that has ever felt like I could stop running. "
The confession settles deep beside the realization I've been avoiding all week.
I'm in love with him.
Completely. Irrevocably. In love with this careful, broken, impossibly gentle being.
"Then stop running," I whisper.
"What if—"
"Stay." I pull him down to me again. "Just stay."
He kisses me instead of answering.
We stay tangled together while the forge grows cold around us.
Everything I want is right here.
