Roseth

Bellmere trembles beneath my feet as I drag the forge cart through the ruined square.

The wheels catch against broken cobblestones every few seconds, jolting hard enough to bruise my palms against the handles. Sparks spit from the furnace strapped to the cart, its fire fighting desperately against rain, ash, and the violent resonance tearing through the town.

Another pulse rolls across the town, windows burst overhead as people scream.

Khaivor throws both hands outward beside me and the invisible force bends around a cluster of fleeing townsfolk before it can crush them beneath falling stone.

The effort nearly folds him in half.

“Khaivor!”

“I am still standing,” he says through clenched teeth but barely

Blood streaks down the side of his neck from one ear. His breathing comes sharp and uneven now, each inhale dragged painfully into his lungs as he forces more resonance through his body than any living person should survive.

But he stays beside me, always beside me.

“Move!” Brohm shouts ahead of us as he shoves splintered market beams out of the path. “Get the cart through!”

Vi helps pull frightened children toward the shelter of the western streets while the lake continues churning violently behind us. Festival lanterns drift across the flooded shoreline like dying stars.

Everything beautiful about tonight has turned monstrous.

Another resonance wave slams through Bellmere and the temple bells scream.

The ground cracks open near the docks with a violent snap that sends people stumbling backward in terror.

Khaivor catches the collapsing edge of a nearby balcony with raw resonance magic before it can crush a family beneath it. The structure hangs suspended for one impossible heartbeat before crashing harmlessly sideways instead.

Gasps ripple through the crowd. Some stare at him with gratitude. Others stare with fear and he notices both.

I see it in the tightness around his eyes.

“Do not look at them,” I say quickly.

A strained laugh escapes him. “Difficult advice while saving them.”

I shove the forge cart into the center of the square.

“Here.”

Khaivor turns sharply toward me. “Roseth—”

“We cannot stop the resonance by fighting it directly anymore.” I grab tongs from the cart with shaking hands. “The stolen bell is too unstable now.”

Another pulse tears through the air, sharp enough to rattle my teeth.

Khaivor stiffens instantly. His head tilts slightly, listening beyond ordinary hearing. Then his face drains of color.

“It is getting worse.”

I move my focus toward the temple.

The resonance no longer sounds controlled. Even I can hear the instability in the tone. The tones clash unevenly against each other like metal grinding itself apart.

“What is happening?” Vi asks breathlessly.

Khaivor answers without taking his eyes off the temple. “The bell is collapsing beneath its own amplification.”

Brohm frowns. “In words that normal people can understand,”

“It is becoming too powerful to control,” I say quietly.

A terrible realization drops.

“It will kill everyone.”

Silence flashes across the square despite the chaos surrounding us.

Human, Dark elfs, It no longer matters.

The resonance wants destruction now.

And Father Orrick finally understands what he has unleashed.

The temple doors stand open above the square.

Father Orrick grips the stolen bell with white-knuckled hands and a scared countenance while violent resonance surges around him in spiraling waves. Cracks split through the stone floor beneath his feet.

“This was not the purpose,” he whispers hoarsely.

Another pulse explodes outward and everything shatters.

Below him, Bellmere screams.

His horrified gaze drops toward the fleeing crowds as realization crashes fully into him at last.

The bell no longer obeys intention.

Only resonance and destruction.

“Rose!”

Vi grabs my shoulder as another shockwave rattles the square. “Tell us what to do.”

I force myself to breathe… to think.

The answer already exists. It has existed since the moment Khaivor struck that first bell years ago and found peace inside its sound.

Resonance answers resonance.

Not through force but through balance.

“We make another bell,” I say.

Brohm stares at me like I have finally lost my mind. “Now?”

“Yes. Now.”

“The town is collapsing!” he blurts out.

“And so will everyone in it if we do nothing!”

The words crack out of me harder than intended. Silence instantly follows.

Then Khaivor steps beside me despite the visible tremor running through his body.

“What do you need?” he asks, grunting fiercely.

My throat tightens painfully.

“Keep the resonance stable long enough for me to work.”

His exhausted eyes hold mine for one lingering moment before he nods once.

Then he turns toward the town.

The air bends instantly around him.

Resonance surges outward from his body in expanding rings, colliding violently against the destructive waves tearing through Bellmere. The impact shakes the square hard enough to send dust cascading from rooftops.

Khaivor staggers.

But the incoming wave splits apart.

Cheers erupt nearby from people who do not fully understand what he is doing, only that they are still alive because of it.

I force my attention toward the forge equipment.

The familiar motions steady my breathing.

I thrust bronze into the furnace while sparks roared upward into the night. Around me, Bellmere continues shaking beneath violent resonance, yet the closer I move toward the work itself, the quieter the fear becomes.

Khaivor once told me sound lives inside everything. Now I finally understand. The bronze hums before I even touch it.

Not loudly but patiently as I lift the hammer to strike.

The tone rings sharp and unfinished and another strike follows immediately after.

The resonance changes beneath my hands.

Not separate from the metal but within it.

I stop thinking about shaping bronze and begin listening instead.

The sound tells me where to strike and the heat tells me when to wait.Somewhere nearby Khaivor gasps sharply in pain.

I look up.

A massive resonance wave crashes toward the square like invisible thunder.

Khaivor throws both arms outward.

The impact drives him to one knee. Blood spills from his mouth. Fear nearly tears the hammer from my hand.

“Khaivor!”

“I am fine,” he lies instantly.

He is not fine.

His entire body shakes now beneath the strain. Veins of silver resonance flicker visibly beneath his skin each time he forces another barrier into existence.

He is burning himself alive to protect this town.

My chest aches so violently I can barely breathe.

“Rose!” Vi shouts from nearby. “Focus!”

She is right.

If I stop now, all of this becomes meaningless.

I turn back toward the molten bronze.

Rhythm spreads through my body until the chaos around me fades into distant noise. I hear only resonance now. Harmonics. Vibrations. Layers folding together like music searching for resolution.

The destructive bell tears resonance apart because it forces domination.

This bell must do the opposite.

It must invite balance, just like how I balance Khaivor. How he resonates with me but yet creates something different.

My next strike lands softer. The tone blooms warm and deep Khaivor’s head lifts instantly.

He hears it too and I keep going.

Another violent pulse slams toward the square.

Khaivor catches it and this time his legs nearly give out completely.

The barrier flickers dangerously and screams erupt nearby.

The final shape emerges beneath my hands glowing gold-red from the furnace heat. Sweat pours down my back. My arms burn. My lungs ache from smoke and fear and exhaustion.

One final strike and the bell sings. The sound rolls outward clear and warm and impossibly steady. Every violent vibration in Bellmere pauses and bends.

The destructive resonance begins collapsing inward beneath the counter-frequency like storm waves folding into calm water.

The screaming from the top falters sharply.

Cracks run across the stolen bell. Father Orrick stares at it in horror moments before it shatters in his hands, the wave throwing him across town.

Silence blooms across Bellmere. Not empty silence but peaceful.

The trembling vibration seizes and the lake calms. Lanterns sway gently above stunned crowds.

And beside me, Khaivor collapses into my arms.
