23. The Next Round

The Next Round

Damian

Nichole walks beside me, her stride confident, her expression unreadable, but I can feel it—the fire burning beneath her skin. The thrill of the game still lingers between us, electric and charged, neither of us acknowledging it out loud, but both of us feeling it.

I lead her through the casino, back down the quiet hallway, past the iron doors, and into the elevator. The doors slide shut with a soft chime, sealing us inside. The air shifts, condensing, thickening, a slow, intoxicating pressure pressing in from all sides.

She doesn’t look at me right away, standing just a few feet away, her hand resting lightly on the strap of her purse where she tucked away the red chip. But she knows I’m watching her.

She feels it.

The way her breath catches, the way the muscles in her shoulders tense ever so slightly. She’s waiting.

The elevator descends, a smooth, slow drop, as if it knows neither of us are in a hurry.

Finally, she exhales a quiet laugh, tilting her head slightly without turning fully toward me. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

I smirk, stepping closer, just enough to break the unspoken boundary between us. “You tell me, princess.”

Her fingers tighten slightly around her purse strap.

I reach up and press the emergency stop button. The elevator shudders to a halt.

The silence that follows is deafening.

Nichole turns then, her gaze meeting mine, sharp, burning. “Is this part of the deal?”

I take another step, closing the space until she’s trapped between me and the steel wall.

I don’t touch her. Not yet. But my presence alone is enough. The way her breath hitches tells me everything.

“I think you knew exactly what kind of deal you were making.” My voice is low, deliberate, a challenge wrapped in silk.

Her lips part, her pulse visible at the base of her throat. “And what are you planning to do with your winnings?”

The corner of my mouth curves, slow, predatory. “I’ll collect when I’m ready.”

A slow exhale leaves her lips.

She likes this.

She likes the game, the push and pull, the tension strung tight between us. She might act like she’s still in control, but I see the truth in her eyes—she’s already given in.

I reach up, fingers brushing the strap of her purse, the place where she tucked my chip away. A slow, teasing touch, nothing more. But her body reacts instantly.

Her breath stumbles.

Her fingers twitch.

I don’t move away. “Unless, of course, you’d like to renegotiate.”

A beat of silence. Then, she smirks.

Nichole tilts her chin, gaze steady, unyielding. “Not a chance.”

I chuckle, low and dark, reaching for the emergency button and releasing it.

The elevator lurches back into motion, the tension still simmering between us like a slow-burning fuse.

This round might be over. But the real game is just beginning.

The elevator doors slide open with a soft chime, but neither of us move.

Nichole stays exactly where she is, close but not touching, her breathing even, her body language composed. But I see it—the way she grips the strap of her purse a little too tightly, the way her chest rises and falls with a rhythm just slightly offbeat.

She’s still feeling the weight of what just happened.

I step back first, giving her space, though we both know I’m not really giving her anything. The power shift between us has already tilted, and I have no intention of letting her reset it.

With deliberate ease, I slide my hands into my pockets and step out of the elevator, forcing her to follow.

We emerge onto the quiet city street, the night stretching out around us, the hum of distant traffic and the flicker of streetlights casting shadows on the pavement.

The underground casino entrance is nothing more than a nondescript building, just another piece of the city that hides its secrets in plain sight.

A sleek black car waits at the curb—hers. But she hesitates before walking toward it.

She turns to me, lifting a brow. “Is this where we part ways?”

I smirk, tilting my head slightly. “That depends.”

She exhales a soft laugh, shifting her weight onto one hip. “On what?”

I step closer, just enough for the night air to feel warmer, for the space between us to shrink again.

“On whether or not you’re ready for the next round.”

Her pulse kicks. I see it in the way her lips part, the way her fingers flex at her side before she crosses her arms, as if she can physically hold back her own reaction.

I lean in slightly, my voice dropping just enough to brush against her skin. “You played well tonight, princess. But you and I both know—” My eyes flick down to the purse where my red chip is still hidden. “That wasn’t the real bet.”

She doesn’t blink. She doesn’t falter. But her grip on her purse tightens, and I know she understands exactly what I mean.

The real bet is us.

The way we push and pull, the way neither of us back down, the way this game has never been about the cards or the money.

The real gamble is what happens next.

Nichole exhales, slow and deliberate, then tilts her chin slightly, gaze locked onto mine. “So, what’s your offer?”

I let the question hang, letting her feel it. Letting her wonder what I’ll say next.

Then, I give her exactly what she’s waiting for.

“A drive.”

Her brows lift slightly, like she wasn’t expecting that. “A drive?”

I smirk. “Unless you’re afraid of being alone with me.”

That does it. Her lips part in something between amusement and challenge. “I think you’re the one who should be afraid.”

I chuckle, low and dark. “I guess we’ll find out.”

I pull open the passenger side door of my car and gesture inside.

For the first time tonight, she hesitates. Not out of fear. Not out of uncertainty.

But because she knows—once she gets in, there’s no turning back.

Nichole stares at me for a second longer, then exhales sharply. Without another word, she steps inside.

I shut the door behind her, smirking to myself before sliding into the driver’s seat.

I don’t ask if she’s sure.

I just start the engine and pull into the night.

Because I already know she’s all in.

The city glows outside the windshield, neon reflections flickering across the hood of the car as I drive. The roads are mostly empty, the hum of the tires against the asphalt the only sound between us. It’s quiet. But not the kind of quiet that fills space—it’s the kind that thickens it.

Nichole sits in the passenger seat, her posture calm, controlled. But I see the way her fingers graze the edge of her purse, the way she crosses her legs a little too slowly, like she knows I’m watching.

She hasn’t asked where we’re going.

Because deep down, she already knows.

I take a turn onto a more secluded road, the glow of the city dimming behind us, the buildings giving way to open stretches of highway. The air in the car shifts—heavier now, charged.

“Nice car,” she says eventually, her voice smooth, nonchalant, as if this is just another night, another drive.

I smirk, resting one hand on the wheel, the other on the gearshift. “You should see my other one.”

She exhales a quiet laugh, turning her head slightly toward me. “I should, huh?”

I glance at her from the corner of my eye. She’s testing me.

Good.

I like when she plays along.

“You like control, don’t you?” I muse, tapping my fingers against the wheel.

She tilts her head. “That a problem?”

“Not at all.” I let the words stretch, drawling them out just enough to make her wonder what I really mean. “I like watching people try to keep it.”

She smirks, shifting in her seat, leaning just slightly toward me. “You think I’m losing control?”

I don’t answer right away. I just let my gaze flick toward her, slow, deliberate, taking in the way she’s studying me, the way she’s not backing down.

I keep my voice low, edged with something dangerous. “I think you’re waiting to see what happens when you do.”

For the first time tonight, she doesn’t have a quick response.

Her breath is slow, measured, but I catch the way her fingers tighten ever so slightly on her purse.

She feels it.

The push and pull. The game we’re playing, the one we haven’t named yet, but both know damn well we’re in.

I take the next turn, pulling onto a private road. The tires crunch softly over gravel as I slow to a stop.

Nichole glances out the window, finally breaking her silence. “Where are we?”

I shift into park but don’t answer immediately.

Instead, I turn to her, my arm resting against the back of her seat, my face close enough that I can see the flicker of something dark and intrigued in her eyes.

I don’t blink. Neither does she.

Then I say, “Someplace private.”

The silence between us is thick, a living, breathing thing.

Nichole hasn’t moved, hasn’t shifted away, hasn’t pulled back. She’s waiting. And so am I.

For a second, I let it stretch, the tension wrapping around us, coiling so damn tight I can feel the pulse of it between us.

Her breath is steady, but her body gives her away—the way her fingers flex against the strap of her purse, the way her lips part ever so slightly like she’s on the verge of saying something.

But she doesn’t speak.

Because she knows.

Words aren’t needed anymore.

I reach up, slow, deliberate, and take the purse from her hands, tossing it into the back seat. She doesn’t stop me. Doesn’t flinch. Doesn’t look away.

She’s not just playing along anymore.

She’s waiting for me to snap the thread between us.

I do.

In one smooth motion, I grip her by the waist and pull her onto my lap.

She gasps, her hands landing on my shoulders, nails digging into my suit. Her legs straddle me, her dress riding up just enough to make my blood burn.

I don’t give her time to think.

I slide my hands up her thighs, fingers digging into soft, warm skin, my grip possessive, demanding. She shudders under my touch, her body molding into mine like she was always meant to be here.

For a second, I just take her in.

The way her chest rises and falls against me, the way her lips tremble with restraint, the way her pulse hammers against her throat.

Her eyes are wide, wild—not afraid.

Excited.

I exhale sharply, my voice rough, ragged. “You wanted to know what happens when you lose control?”

Her fingers tighten in my jacket, her breath uneven.

Then, she does it.

She leans in, her lips crashing into mine, her body pressing against me so hard it steals the air from my lungs.

And just like that, the game ends.

Because now there’s no more playing.
