Chapter 56

“Icannot believe you chose a Toyota.”

At my mom’s words, I couldn”t help but laugh.

“What else was I supposed to choose? An Aston Martin?”

“Yes!” My mom yelled. “What is wrong with you? What are you trying to prove? He”s richer than you, enjoy this. It doesn”t mean that you won”t be just as rich as he is in the future or even more. In short, his influence on you, you”ve told me, is wonderful. Being around him will expose you to wealth and businesses… you”ll grow even more.”

“So you”re not upset that I”m dating my boss?” I asked, as I twisted the lock to my apartment. I was excited because, for the first time in months, I was able to drive over to see her. The hassle of public transportation had made these visits infrequent, but in the month since Guy had insisted that I get my own car, I hadn”t been able to get out of it.

“I”m incredibly happy you have good taste. Or else, with your lack of dating escapades, I was sure you were a lesbian. At some point, I was hoping you were one because how does a gorgeous girl like you have no stories whatsoever?”

I couldn’t stop laughing as I headed down to where the car was parked opposite my building and got in.

“You”re leaving now?” She asked, and I nodded.

“Yeah, I”ll be there soon.”

“You couldn’t come over last weekend because you were feeling nauseous. Have you checked why?”

My smile began to dissipate.

“I”m fine now,” I replied. “It passed. I”m better.”

“Alright,” she said. “I”m not going to rush.”

“You”re also not going to threaten me to not be pregnant?” I asked.

“With the boss that is protecting you with all his heart and has engaged you in, based on what I”ve heard from you, the healthiest relationship ever? At this point, I”m hoping you are pregnant.”

Feeling uncomfortable and extremely feverish, I switched the topic, and soon I was on the road.

“Maybe I can go back to the city with you later today?” she asked. “I’d like to return to the city for a little bit.”

This made me more excited than she knew.

“Actually, I was thinking of getting you a place here. I mean, I couldn’t afford it before, but now with my new salary I can.”

“That”s not the only reason why I didn”t live in the city,” she reminded me. “I”ve never really liked New York. I”m just curious now because things seem to be going really well and- “

“Hannah?” she called; however, I was suddenly preoccupied with my brakes.

“I”m here, Mom, it”s just… my brakes don”t seem to be responding.”

“What do you mean?”

“I didn’t notice because I was going slowly, but now that I”m a bit faster, they”re actually… I”m in front of the red light now.”

“Pull over.”

“No, I think-”

Suddenly, I hit on the accelerator, and immediately I lunged forward.

“Shit,” I slammed on the brakes once again, but they didn’t work.

“Holy shit!” My heart stopped.

“Hannah?” She called. “Hannah.”

“I”m in the middle of the road, I”ll reverse now… my brakes aren’t working?”

“Hannah!”

I turned to the side and saw the incoming SUV, my heart broke.

“Mom!”

She screamed. “Hannah!”
