Chapter 4 Words Above His Head

For a while after that, Eldest Senior Sister kept avoiding me, on purpose or not.

I kept the same unspoken distance from her.

Ever since I had seen those golden subtitles, my mind had grown clearer and clearer.

My soul felt like it had broken through a barrier and woken up.

I started wondering why I had targeted Eldest Senior Sister. Had someone put a curse on me?

And I worried whether Eldest Senior Sister still wanted to kill me.

I could die. Just not now. It was not the time yet.

While I was sitting there with a bitter face, Xue Qianxing came looking for me.

"Little Junior Sister, did you fight with your Senior Sister over me again?" Eldest Senior Brother asked, in a warm, polished tone.

I stared at the golden words over his head and sank into thought.

"Turn-off phoenix man." "Must-have for killing the husband to prove the Dao."

The words did not move. Was it an introduction?

Xue Qianxing saw I was not speaking and seemed to take it as another tantrum.

He smiled gently and started coaxing me.

"Still angry? Senior Brother has been too busy lately, so I did not come find you. Don't be mad. Next time Senior Brother will get even for you."

Something felt off in my chest.

The fondness I used to have for Eldest Senior Brother was fading, and I did not know why.

I studied Xue Qianxing's features with care.

Mm... not as good as Qin Ruoyi.

I was a sucker for looks.

Why had I liked him before? I had even given him pills.

Right. Back then I had figured one more simp meant one more way out.

If he had words over his head, what about me?

I conjured a water mirror and looked at myself, meaning to check whether I had words too.

Heh. I really looked good.

Good-looking, yes. But there were words as well. A little eyesore.

"Green-tea player." "Mixed Spirit Root trash." "Vicious supporting villainess."

I twitched the corner of my mouth and pretended I had not seen them.

Xue Qianxing reached for my hand.

I shook him off on instinct.

His smile stiffened. That had never happened before.

I used to flock to him. I had never been this cold.

Xue Qianxing sighed, then flicked the tip of my nose in that doting way.

"Fine, fine. Senior Brother promises. Once my engagement with Qin Ruoyi is called off, Senior Brother will come marry you."

Marry me? Why marry me? I had never even said I liked him.

I stared at him, baffled, and the words slipped out.

"I am the daughter of an immortal house. My Spirit Transformation father would never allow me to marry you."

After I said it, Xue Qianxing and I both went quiet.

Awkward.

Then the formation at the cave dwelling's entrance stirred.

I jolted.

Eldest Senior Sister's face flashed through my mind.

Shit!

I had been acting like I loved her to death.

If she caught me meeting Xue Qianxing in private now, the lie would pop on the spot.

And then... my head.

A shiver ran through me.

Xue Qianxing's expression looked unnatural too, for some reason.

I could not worry about that.

I hunted for somewhere to hide a person.

Until I saw the space under the bed.

I shoved Xue Qianxing toward it.

"Junior Sister... I..." Xue Qianxing sounded unwilling.

"Tsk! Shut up and hide." I glared and pointed at him.

He had no choice. I pushed him in.
