Chapter 21 The Plan That Started Before They Met
The lighthouse felt colder after Gabriel’s words.
Not because of the ocean wind.
Not because of the storm clouds gathering in the distance.
Because a question had entered the room.
A question neither Damian nor Adeline wanted to ask.
Was their love real?
Or had someone arranged the pieces long before they ever met?
Adeline looked at Gabriel.
“My marriage was part of a plan?”
Gabriel’s expression immediately changed.
“No.”
The answer was quick.
Too quick.
She noticed.
“Then explain.”
Gabriel took a breath.
“Your marriage was not arranged.”
“Then why did you say it was the final piece?”
He looked at Damian.
“Because your father believed the two of you would change each other.”
Damian frowned.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“That does not explain anything.”
Gabriel walked toward the old wooden table near the window.
He placed a folder down.
“Your father knew Richard was dangerous.”
Damian nodded.
“We know.”
“No.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“You know part of it.”
He opened the folder.
Inside were old documents.
Letters.
Photographs.
Records.
“Your father discovered that Richard had been working with someone inside both families.”
Adeline stepped closer.
“Who?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“That person was trying to control the Hawthorne and Vale fortunes.”
Damian scanned the documents.
“Why?”
Gabriel smiled sadly.
“Because whoever controlled both families controlled more than money.”
“What?”
“Influence.”
A pause.
“Power.”
Adeline looked through the documents.
She saw names.
Dates.
Meetings.
Things that happened before she was born.
Her entire life had been connected to people she never knew existed.
“My father knew all this?”
“Yes.”
“And Damian’s father?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did they not tell us?”
Gabriel looked at Damian.
“Because they believed telling you would make you a target.”
Adeline’s expression hardened.
“Again.”
The word carried years of frustration.
“Everyone says that.”
She looked around.
“My whole life, people have used protection as an excuse.”
Gabriel lowered his head.
“You are right.”
The answer surprised her.
“I failed you.”
Her eyes filled.
“But I need you to understand something.”
“What?”
“I never stopped loving you.”
The words hurt.
Because they were exactly what she had wanted to hear for years.
But they came too late.
Damian studied Gabriel.
There was something familiar about him.
Not his appearance.
His choices.
The way he carried guilt.
The way he avoided defending himself.
Almost like Adeline.
“You disappeared because of my father.”
Gabriel looked at him.
“Yes.”
Damian’s expression changed.
“My father?”
“He helped me escape.”
The answer shocked him.
“Then why did you say he made a plan?”
Gabriel sighed.
“Because your father believed one thing.”
“What?”
“That people who loved each other could break the cycle of their families.”
Damian looked confused.
“Explain.”
Gabriel looked at Adeline.
“Your families spent generations fighting over power.”
A pause.
“Your father and Damian’s father wanted something different.”
“What?”
“A future where their children were not controlled by the past.”
The words should have comforted Adeline.
Instead, they created another fear.
“So my father knew Damian before I met him?”
Gabriel nodded.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Your parents were close to the Vale family.”
“Then why did Damian not know?”
“Because his father wanted him to have a normal life.”
Adeline looked at Damian.
She saw the confusion on his face.
The pain.
The realization.
For years, Damian had believed he inherited only a company.
Maybe he inherited a responsibility.
That evening, they returned to the farmhouse.
Nobody spoke during the drive.
Too many truths.
Too many emotions.
When they arrived, Adeline went outside.
Damian followed.
She stood near the garden.
The same garden where they had first talked about rebuilding their marriage.
“I don’t know what to feel.”
Damian stopped beside her.
“You don’t have to decide tonight.”
She looked at him.
“Do you believe him?”
“I don’t know.”
She almost smiled.
Almost.
“You finally learned that phrase can be honest.”
He nodded.
“I did.”
A quiet moment passed.
Then she asked:
“Do you think we were meant to meet?”
The question surprised him.
Years ago, he would have answered immediately.
Now he thought carefully.
“I think we chose each other.”
She looked at him.
“Even if people connected our families?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because nobody could force me to love you.”
The sincerity in his voice affected her.
“Damian…”
He looked at her.
“I know I hurt you.”
A pause.
“I know I made you feel alone.”
Another pause.
“But every choice I made after meeting you was because I wanted you in my life.”
She looked away.
Because part of her believed him.
And that scared her.
The next morning, they received unexpected news.
Richard had escaped.
Elias delivered the information personally.
“How?”
Damian asked.
“Someone inside the facility helped him.”
Adeline’s expression changed.
“Someone else?”
Elias nodded.
“We found evidence that Richard had another partner.”
Damian frowned.
“Who?”
Elias handed him a file.
Damian opened it.
His face changed.
“What?”
Adeline stepped closer.
“What is it?”
He looked at the document.
Then slowly handed it to her.
The file contained financial transfers.
Messages.
Proof.
The person who helped Richard escape was someone who had been close to Damian for years.
Someone who knew his company.
Someone who knew his family.
Someone who knew Adeline.
Her eyes widened.
“No.”
Damian looked at her.
“You know them?”
She nodded slowly.
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“Everyone knows them.”
“Who?”
Adeline looked at Damian.
And whispered the name.
“Marcus.”
Damian froze.
His assistant.
The man who had worked beside him for years.
The man who knew his schedule.
His security.
His business.
Everything.
The person he trusted most.
Before they could react, Damian’s phone rang.
Marcus.
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
Silence.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Somewhere you cannot reach me.”
Damian’s expression hardened.
“Why?”
A sad laugh.
“Because I got tired of watching powerful people destroy ordinary lives.”
Adeline looked at Damian.
Marcus continued:
“You want the truth?”
A pause.
“I will give you the truth.”
Another pause.
“Your father did not create this plan to save you.”
Damian went still.
“Then why?”
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“He created it because he knew you were the only person who could stop Adeline from becoming exactly like her family.”
Adeline froze.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus answered:
“It means your wife is not the victim you think she is.”
Silence.
Damian’s heart tightened.
“Marcus.”
The line remained open.
Then Marcus said:
“Ask Gabriel what he never told his daughter.”
A pause.
“Ask him what Adeline inherited.”
The call ended.
Damian and Adeline looked at each other.
Because once again…
The truth was not finished.
