Chapter 28 The Last Secret of the Hawthorne Family

The room became still.

Nobody spoke.

Because after everything they had uncovered, everyone thought they understood the enemy.

Richard.

The old conflicts.

The hidden agreements.

The stolen power.

But now there was another secret.

Another person.

Another betrayal.

Adeline looked at her grandfather.

“You said the documents were changed.”

The old man nodded.

“Yes.”

“By who?”

His expression hardened.

“I don’t know.”

That answer surprised everyone.

For the first time, the most powerful man in the room looked uncertain.

Damian noticed.

And that frightened him more than anger would have.

Because a person like the Hawthorne patriarch did not admit ignorance easily.

Alexander took the documents from the table.

He examined them carefully.

“The changes were made before I discovered the trust.”

Damian looked at him.

“When?”

“Twenty-five years ago.”

Adeline frowned.

“Before I was born.”

“Yes.”

The timing mattered.

Because it meant this was not about her.

Not originally.

Someone had been planning for years.

Gabriel looked troubled.

“There was one person who had access.”

Everyone turned.

“Who?”

Gabriel looked at his family.

“My sister.”

Elena’s expression changed.

“You mean…”

Gabriel nodded.

“My sister, Victoria.”

The name meant nothing to Adeline.

But the reaction from the others did.

The Hawthorne patriarch’s face changed.

“You said she was gone.”

Gabriel looked away.

“She was.”

Damian narrowed his eyes.

“Gone how?”

Gabriel hesitated.

“After the trust documents were changed, she disappeared.”

Adeline looked confused.

“So she could have changed them?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Nobody answered.

Then her grandfather spoke.

“Because Victoria believed the trust should belong to her.”

The search began immediately.

Old Hawthorne records.

Family archives.

Financial documents.

Every piece of information they could find about Victoria.

And what they discovered changed the entire story.

Victoria Hawthorne had not disappeared.

She had rebuilt herself.

New identity.

New companies.

New connections.

She had been living quietly for years.

Waiting.

Damian looked at the files.

“She planned all of this.”

Gabriel nodded.

“Possibly.”

Adeline stared at the photographs.

A woman she had never met.

A woman who had shaped her entire life from the shadows.

“Why?”

Her voice was tired.

“Why do people keep doing this?”

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was always the same.

Power.

Control.

Fear.

That evening, Damian found Adeline outside.

She sat near the garden.

The place where they had shared some of their most honest conversations.

He sat beside her.

“You’re thinking.”

She looked at him.

“You know me too well.”

A small smile.

“I’m learning.”

That answer touched her.

Because before, Damian thought knowing her meant remembering details.

Her coffee order.

Her favorite flowers.

Her schedule.

Now he understood.

Knowing someone meant understanding what they carried inside.

“What happens after this?”

He looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“When this is over.”

A pause.

“The secrets. The families. The trust.”

She looked at him.

“What happens to us?”

The question was different from before.

Before, she had asked if their marriage could survive.

Now she was asking if there was a future.

Damian took a breath.

“I don’t know.”

She smiled slightly.

“You really learned.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But I know what I want.”

“What?”

“I want a marriage where we choose each other every day.”

Her eyes softened.

“Not because our families connected us.”

A pause.

“Because we do.”

For the first time in months, they held hands without fear.

Not because everything was fixed.

It was not.

Trust took time.

Healing took time.

But something had changed.

They were no longer fighting to return to the past.

They were building something new.

The next morning, Victoria made contact.

Not directly.

Through a message.

One sentence.

You finally found the truth.

A second message appeared.

But you still believe you know the whole story.

Damian frowned.

Another message followed.

Meet me if you want to know why your parents really died.

Adeline read the message.

Her face changed.

“Another secret.”

Damian nodded.

“I know.”

She looked at him.

“But this time, we face it together.”

The words mattered.

Because months ago, she would have said:

You handle it.

Now she said:

We.

They met Victoria at an old Hawthorne estate.

The property was abandoned.

Forgotten.

The perfect place for someone who had spent years hiding.

Victoria stood waiting.

She looked nothing like Adeline imagined.

She was not cruel-looking.

Not frightening.

Just tired.

A woman who had carried anger too long.

“I wondered when you would come.”

Adeline looked at her.

“Why did you change the trust?”

Victoria smiled sadly.

“Because I believed I deserved it.”

The honesty surprised them.

“You ruined lives because of that?”

Victoria looked away.

“Yes.”

No excuses.

No pretending.

Just guilt.

“Your grandfather built a system where one person could decide the future of everyone.”

She looked at Adeline.

“I wanted that power.”

Adeline shook her head.

“So you became exactly what you hated.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

Damian stepped forward.

“You know who ordered the accident.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

Everyone became still.

“Who?”

She looked at Adeline.

“Before I tell you, you need to understand something.”

“What?”

“Your parents did not die because they discovered the trust.”

A pause.

“They died because they discovered who was using it.”

Adeline’s heart raced.

“Who?”

Victoria looked at Damian.

Then at Alexander.

Then finally at Adeline.

“The person controlling everything was not trying to take the trust.”

A pause.

“They were trying to erase it.”

Damian frowned.

“Why?”

Victoria whispered:

“Because the original trust was never about wealth.”

She looked at Adeline.

“It was about choosing the person who would destroy the old system.”

Silence.

Adeline stared.

“What does that mean?”

Victoria answered:

“It means someone has been trying to stop you from becoming the one person who could change everything.”

Before anyone could ask another question, Victoria’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

“What?”

A pause.

“No.”

She looked at Adeline.

Fear appeared.

“They found us.”

Damian immediately turned.

“Who?”

Victoria lowered the phone.

And whispered:

“The person who started this.”

A shadow moved outside the estate.

A figure appeared near the entrance.

Someone everyone thought was gone.

Someone whose name had already changed their lives once.

Victoria whispered:

“Your father’s killer is here.”
