Chapter Eighteen What She Wants

Aria kept the divorce papers, untouched, for nine days.

She moved into a hotel suite under a private security team she personally vetted. She visited her mother daily, oversaw the independent medical team now controlling Evelyn’s care, and held daily meetings with accountants and attorneys.

For the past few days, everyone around her had asked what Damien wanted, what Augustus planned, or what Victor threatened. Aria finally asked a simpler, far more radical question: what did she want?

The answer was not safety at any price. It was not blind revenge. It was a life large enough to contain love without requiring her to disappear inside it.

She wrote those wants down on paper: Her independent company. Her mother safe. The trust fund completely severed from Blackthorne control. A marriage that could survive the word no.

When she showed the list to Damien during a brief neutral meeting, he read it twice and asked quietly which part belonged to him.

“Whichever part I keep choosing,” she told him.

After that meeting, Damien did not contact her.

For ten days, the silence from his end was total.

No phone calls. No shadow security following three cars back.

No subtle corporate moves. That silence disturbed her far more than his surveillance ever had, because it proved he was actually trying to obey her terms. The distance bothered her more than she wanted it to.

The fact that he was trying, for her, said more than she wanted to admit.

On the tenth night, Aria returned to Blackthorne House.

Helena answered the front entrance, her tired eyes warming as she embraced Aria without asking for permission. “He is upstairs.”

“Does he know I’m here?” Aria asked.

“Mr. Blackthorne knows everything except the things that actually matter,” Helena replied softly.

Aria took the elevator to basement—the room that had once housed the banks of monitors watching her life.

Damien stood in the dim light, manually dismantling the equipment.

The monitors had been disconnected and stacked against the wall.

The hard drives were packed into labeled evidence boxes meant for Aria’s legal team.

The central wall that had once held photos, timelines, and surveillance stills of her was completely bare.

He turned when the heavy door clicked open. Hope flashed across his dark eyes, then vanished behind a wall of disciplined control.

“Did you sign?” he asked, his voice low.

Aria walked into the room and placed the divorce papers on the desk beside a stack of disconnected cables.

“No.”

His breath hitched almost imperceptibly. “Why?”

“Because I am not finished deciding what I want.”

“And tonight?” he asked, watching her every move.

She crossed the space between them until she stood directly in front of him. “Tonight, I want something the contract never purchased.”

Damien’s hands remained rigid at his sides, refusing to reach for her. “Say it.”

“You.”

His carefully constructed composure fractured. “Aria, if you are here because you think desire proves forgiveness—”

“It doesn’t.”

“If you think giving me your body restores balance between us—”

“It doesn’t.”

“Then why?”

She reached out and rested her palm flat against his jaw, feeling the tension locked in his muscle. “Because you took choices from me for years, and I refuse to let that anger poison every choice I make now. I want you.” She paused, ”I am still furious with you. Both are true.”

Damien turned his head slightly, pressing his mouth into the warm center of her palm. “Tell me your rules.”

“You ask before anything new,” Aria said, her eyes locked onto his. “You stop the second I say stop. No restraints. No marks where anyone can see.”

“And afterward?”

“You let me leave if I choose to go.”

“Agreed.”

She kissed him first.

Damien remained entirely still—offering no force, taking no lead—until her fingers unbuttoned his shirt, pushing the heavy fabric down his arms. Only then did he lift her onto the edge of the empty control console, his hands anchoring at her waist, his mouth crashing against hers with the raw, starving desperation of many agonizing days without each other.

Every touch was heavy, deliberate, and electric with restraint.

“Here?” He growled against her throat, his hands sliding up the silk of her dress, gathering the fabric around her hips.

“Yes.”

“More?”

“Yes.”

He undressed her slowly, intentionally allowing her to strip away every layer of his clothing in return. His bare chest pressed against hers, skin hot, heart hammering against her palm. Nothing was demanded; every shift of weight was offered and claimed.

When his mouth dragged down her neck, over her collarbone, and lower, Aria gripped his hair, guiding his head without hesitation.

Damien obeyed with ruthless, intoxicating precision.

His tongue and hands moved with a dark, devouring focus, driving her up the edge of breathlessness until she arched off the desk, her fingers tangled in his hair, crying out as a wave of intense pleasure shattered her lingering defenses.

Before the tremor in her limbs could settle, he swept her into his arms and carried her down to the master bedroom.

At the edge of the wide mattress, he paused, her chest heaving against his, his dark eyes ablaze with a wild, feral heat he was struggling to contain.

“Last chance,” he rasped, his voice raw.

“Not yours,” she whispered, her thighs wrapping firmly around his waist, pulling his weight directly over her. “Mine.”

She pulled him down into the sheets.

When he drove into her, the impact was deep and unyielding, a searing friction that made them both gasp.

It was intense, visceral, and emotionally raw—a collision of months of anger, possession, and buried longing.

Damien took his time with every thrust, buried to the hilt, pausing only when her breath hitched, his jaw tight as he fought his own desire to lose control completely.

Aria met every heavy stroke, her hands gripping his shoulders, her hips rising to meet him.

She refused to yield or disappear beneath him.

She held his burning gaze through every hard, agonizingly slow roll of his hips, forcing him to witness her actively choosing him, taking him, matching his intensity stride for stride.

“Say my name,” he demanded, his voice strained, his hands gripping her hips tightly as he drove deeper, faster.

“Ask me.”

His forehead slammed against hers, his chest slick with sweat, his breath ragged against her lips. “Please, Aria. Please.”

The word, spoken with raw, undone reverence by a man who had only ever commanded, shattered the last barrier between them.

“Damien.”

He lost all restraint. His pace turned frantic, hard, and desperate, burying himself inside her until a final, shattering crest overtook them both. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his body shuddering violently as he spilled inside her, her name breaking from his lips like a prayer.

Afterward, he held her in the quiet dark, his heavy body weight resting beside hers without trapping her. His hand rested palm-up on the tangled sheets between them, waiting patiently until she voluntarily slid her fingers into his.

At dawn, before the household awoke, Aria dressed and left.

Damien watched her go from the bed, but he did not try to stop her.

He asked her on their first date the next day. She said no, mostly to test him, but when he asked her out for coffee, she agreed. It was nice to just talk to him, to learn who he was outside of their contract. They started having dinner together nightly, but she didn’t move back in.

Three weeks after their tryst, standing in the bright fluorescent light of a pharmacy bathroom three blocks from her hotel room, Aria stared down at the counter.

Two bold pink lines appeared on the plastic test.
