CHAPTER 18 #2

They undressed by degrees, with pauses for breath, for pain, for the lamp he moved closer only after she nodded. Rian kept the blanket under her knees, another behind her left side, his palm always braced where she placed it. He learned the map of what hurt and what made her grip his shoulder.

He learned that she liked his mouth at her throat but not his weight near the wound. He learned that anger could live in the same body as desire and not poison it when the choice stayed hers.

Clara was not quiet. That nearly ruined him. She told him yes.

Slower. There. Wait.

Again. She laughed once when he froze too fast at a harmless gasp, then kissed him until the laughter became a softer sound. The fire warmed her skin.

His hands shook when she drew him close.

“Rian.”

“Tell me.”

“I want all of you. Carefully. Now.”

He closed his eyes for one breath. When he opened them, she was watching him with no surrender in her face at all. Only choice.

“Condom,” he said, because care was still care even when his blood had turned to flame.

“Pocket?”

“Wallet. Desk drawer has more.”

“Wallet first. I am not waiting while you organize supplies like a committee.”

A rough laugh broke out of him, startled and human. He got what they needed without leaving her reach. She watched.

He let her. Then she pulled him back down, and the room narrowed to the pressure of her hands, the heat of her body, the sharp care of moving together without hurting her.

When they finally joined, he stopped completely.

Clara's fingers dug into his shoulders. “I did not say stop.”

“I need a second.”

“For my side?”

“For my control.”

Her eyes darkened. She rolled her hips, small and deliberate, a yes written in motion. “Then earn it.”

He bowed his head to her shoulder and obeyed.

There was nothing detached about it. Nothing easy. Every movement was negotiated in breath and touch, every surge of pleasure checked against the line of pain he would not cross.

Clara set the pace until trust became rhythm. Rian followed until following stopped feeling like restraint and started feeling like devotion made physical.

When pleasure took her, she said his name like it belonged to her mouth and no file in the world had ever owned it.

He followed with his face against her hair, holding himself above her wound, broken open by tenderness he had no defense against.

After, he wrapped her in the blanket before he reached for his own clothes. She allowed him that. Allowed his hand to smooth her hair back, allowed water, allowed the quiet press of his mouth to her knuckles.

“No disappearing,” she murmured.

“No disappearing.”

“No deciding what this means without me.”

“Never again.”

She opened one eye. “That is a large promise.”

“Then I will spend a long time proving it in small ways.”

Her eye closed again, but her fingers stayed wrapped around his.

For a few minutes, the storm existed outside the circle of fire. Rian let himself sit inside the warmth Clara had chosen and not claim it as his. The archive had gone out.

His credentials were ash. Her breathing settled against his shoulder.

Then the monitor in the study gave one soft warning chime.

Rian lifted his head.

On the camera grid beyond the archway, the north window feed went black.

Then the ridge gate.

Then the generator shed.

Afterward did not arrive all at once.

It came in small permissions.

Clara let Rian bring the blanket higher around her shoulders. She let him take the water glass from the low table and hold it where she could reach without twisting. When he glanced at the bandage under her ribs, he did not touch it.

He waited with his hand open beside her hip until she nodded.

“Only the edge,” she said.

“Only the edge.”

His fingers were steady there, careful through the cloth, checking for warmth, dampness, the spreading proof of damage. His mouth had been at her throat minutes ago. His body had been inside hers with a restraint so sharp it had felt like surrender.

Now he examined the dressing with the focus of a man defusing a charge, and Clara found the tenderness more dangerous than the sex.

“No fresh bleed,” he said.

“That sounded professionally disappointed.”

“That sounded like profound relief with poor social delivery.”

She laughed before she could stop herself. The motion tugged at her side. He froze.

“Still not an emergency,” she said.

“I am learning the scale.”

“Slowly.”

“Accurately, I hope.”

She took the glass from him and drank. The fire was too warm against her shins and not warm enough against the chill that came after too much fear left the body. Outside the windows, snow kept throwing itself at the dark.

Inside, the archive he had burned had already left them. His company could not swallow it back. Neither could he.

“Say what you are thinking,” she said.

Rian sat on the floor beside the rug instead of behind her. Beside, lower, where she could see every movement. “I am thinking I want to carry you to bed, lock every door, and stand between you and the world until the storm dies.”

Her pulse kicked, part want, part warning. “And what are you going to do?”

“Ask whether you want the bed or the rug. Leave the doors alone unless you tell me. Check the camera grid in two minutes because danger did not pause for us.”

“Good answer.”

“It took me an appalling amount of character damage to get here.”

This time she smiled without laughing. His eyes dropped to her mouth, then lifted again before the look could become pressure.

Clara reached for his hand. He gave it, palm up. She turned it over and studied the faint burn mark across his thumb from the credential reader, a small red welt where the token had gone hot.

The sacrifice had left proof on him. Not enough. Maybe nothing would ever be enough to balance fear, blood, and withheld truth on a clean ledger.

But enough could be a direction.

“Does it hurt?” she asked.

“A little.”

“Your kingdom leaving through your thumb?”

“That hurt more.”

She traced the burn with the edge of her nail, light enough not to press. “Do you regret it?”

“No.”

“Not even if Vale Dominion falls?”

He looked toward the study, where the laptop waited with its new mirror paths and pending recipients. “If it falls because the truth reaches daylight, then it was already rotten in places I refused to inspect.”

“That sounds almost healthy.”

“Do not overpraise me. I might relapse into owning a fortress.”

Clara's smile faded into something softer and more tired. “I am still scared.”

Rian's hand closed around hers only after she curled her fingers first. “Tell me which fear needs work.”

It was such a precise question that her eyes stung.

“Greer updating my mother's address,” she said. “Mara being exposed. You deciding one grand sacrifice buys back every locked door.”

“Then we make three promises that are not romantic.” His voice went rougher. “We warn Mara first. We protect your mother with people you approve, not my private army in the dark.

“And every door after this is discussed before it closes.”

“Clara rested her forehead against his shoulder. ”Small ways.“

His lips touched her hair. “A long time proving them.”

One by one, the lodge's internal cameras went dark.
