Chapter Forty - Nine
Chapter
Forty-Nine
MALACHI
"Again," I command, circling Sage as she stands in the center of the ritual space, her skin gleaming with perspiration, golden light pulsing beneath the surface. "Deeper this time. Find the core of it."
Three days since I showed her Elinor's room. Three days of increasingly demanding training sessions, pushing her to access levels of power she never knew she possessed. And she's responding—magnificently.
Gone is the hesitant librarian who flinched at loud noises and averted her eyes when addressed directly. In her place stands a woman growing into her power with remarkable speed, her natural affinity for magic blossoming under the right guidance.
My guidance.
She closes her eyes, centering herself as I've taught her.
The ritual circle beneath her feet glows in response to her concentration, silver lines pulsing in rhythm with her heartbeat.
She's naked, her hair is pulled back in a simple braid, revealing the elegant line of her neck, the delicate curve of her jaw.
I push away the distraction, focusing on the task at hand. Today's lesson is critical—teaching her to project her power beyond her physical form, to extend her will across distance.
"Visualize the target," I instruct, gesturing to the far end of the room where I've placed a series of crystal spheres on pedestals of varying heights. "Feel it, even though you can't touch it. Connect to it with your magic, then exert your will."
She extends her hands, golden light flowing from her fingertips like liquid sunshine. The energy reaches toward the nearest crystal, wrapping around it in tendrils of pure magic. The sphere begins to vibrate, responding to her power.
"Good," I encourage, moving to stand behind her. "Now lift it. Not with your magic as a tool, but as an extension of yourself."
Her brow furrows in concentration. The sphere wobbles, rises an inch from its pedestal, then clatters back down.
"You're still thinking of your magic as separate from you," I observe, stepping closer. "As something you use rather than something you are."
She exhales in frustration, the golden light flickering. "I'm trying."
"Don't try," I say, my voice softening slightly. "Be."
I place my hands on her shoulders, feeling the heat of her skin. She stiffens momentarily at the contact, then relaxes as I channel a small measure of my own power into her through our fragile bond—not to overwhelm or control, but to guide.
"Feel how I do it," I murmur, my mouth close to her ear. "My magic isn't a tool I pick up and put down. It's my breath, my blood, as much a part of me as my heartbeat."
She leans back slightly, allowing more contact between us. I sense her magic responding to mine, the two energies intertwining like old friends reuniting after a long absence.
"That's it," I encourage as the golden light steadies, grows more focused. "Now, try again. But don't reach for the crystal. Extend yourself to it."
This time, when she releases her power, it flows differently—not as separate tendrils but as a unified extension of her being. The crystal rises smoothly from its pedestal, hovering in the air with perfect stability.
"Yes," I murmur approvingly. "Now the next one."
One by one, she lifts the remaining crystals, her confidence growing with each success. By the fifth sphere, she's not just lifting them but arranging them in complex patterns, rotating them in mid-air like planets around a sun.
"Excellent," I say, genuine pride coloring my voice. "Now, the final test."
I move from behind her, walking to the far wall where a cabinet stands. From inside, I remove a black velvet pouch, its contents heavy in my palm. When I return to stand before her, her eyes are bright with curiosity and the exhilaration of newfound ability.
"This," I say, opening the pouch to reveal a crystal unlike the others—obsidian rather than clear, its surface etched with ancient symbols, "is a soul stone. Created in the 14th century by warlocks attempting to capture and contain magical energy in its purest form."
She eyes it warily. "What does it do?"
"When activated properly, it resonates with raw magical power, amplifying and reflecting it back to its source." I extend the stone toward her on my open palm. "I want you to fill it with your power, then control the reflection."
Her eyes widen. "Is that safe?"
"No," I admit. "Which is why you need to learn it. The council possesses similar artifacts. They won't hesitate to use them against you."
She hesitates, then nods, accepting the challenge. I place the stone on the floor at the center of the ritual circle, then step back to give her space.
"Begin slowly," I caution. "Too much power too quickly, and it could shatter—with explosive consequences."
She positions herself before the stone, hands extended.
Golden light flows from her fingertips in a carefully controlled stream, touching the obsidian surface with delicate precision.
The stone absorbs her magic, its black surface beginning to glow with an inner fire, pulsing in time with her heartbeat.
"Good," I encourage. "Now gradually increase the flow. The stone can handle more than you might think."
She complies, her power streaming more forcefully into the crystal. The obsidian drinks it in greedily, glowing brighter with each passing second, the ancient symbols etched on its surface beginning to shimmer with golden light.
"It's working," she says, a note of wonder in her voice.
"Keep going," I urge. "Fill it completely."
Her magic intensifies, pouring into the stone in waves of pure energy. The obsidian now blazes like a captive sun, its light so bright it casts our shadows against the distant wall. The ritual circle beneath our feet responds in kind, the silver lines glowing white-hot with shared power.
Then, without warning, the stone reaches capacity. A high-pitched hum fills the air, vibrating through the floor, the walls, our bodies.
"Prepare yourself," I warn, stepping closer. "It's about to reflect."
The moment the words leave my lips, the stone releases its stored energy in a blinding surge of power. Golden light explodes outward, directly toward Sage, carrying with it the amplified force of her own magic—doubled, tripled, magnified beyond measure.
She gasps, instinctively throwing up her hands to shield herself. But rather than deflecting the energy, she needs to accept it, to reabsorb what she's created.
Without thinking, I move behind her, my body pressing against hers, my arms encircling her waist. "Don't block it," I command urgently. "Take it back. All of it."
The wave of power crashes into us, and I feel her body tense against mine. For a moment, I fear she'll be overwhelmed, unable to contain the sheer magnitude of energy reflecting back at her.
Then, remarkably, she relaxes into my embrace, her body yielding to the inevitable.
Her arms lower, hands opening to receive rather than repel.
The golden light surrounds us, seeps into her skin, into mine where we touch, creating a circuit of shared magic that grows more intense with each passing heartbeat.
"That's it," I murmur against her ear, holding her steady as the power flows through us both. "Perfect."
What happens next is entirely unexpected.
As the last of the reflected energy returns to us, something shifts—a boundary dissolving, a barrier breaking down.
My power, which I've kept carefully controlled, surges forward of its own accord, reaching for hers like a plant seeking sunlight.
Her magic responds in kind, golden light intertwining with my darker energy in patterns too complex to follow.
I can feel her—not just physically but magically, emotionally, the edges of her consciousness brushing against mine like silk against skin. Her surprise, her wonder, her lingering fear all wash over me in waves of sensation.
And she can feel me too—I know it by the way she stiffens in my arms, by the small gasp that escapes her lips as my carefully constructed barriers weaken, allowing her glimpses of what I keep hidden from everyone.
"Malachi," she whispers, voice thick with emotion. "What's happening?"
"I don't know," I admit, the honesty unfamiliar on my tongue. "This is... unexpected."
Our merged magic continues to swirl around us, through us, creating a feedback loop of escalating sensation. Each of her breaths draws my power deeper into her body; each of mine pulls her golden light further into my soul.
With growing alarm, I realize I'm losing control—not just of the situation but of myself, of the carefully constructed walls I've maintained for centuries. Emotions I've kept safely buried rise to the surface—grief for Elinor, rage at the council, loneliness so profound it threatens to consume me.
And something else, something new and fragile and terrifying: desire for the woman in my arms. Not just physical want, but a deeper yearning for connection, for understanding, for something I'd convinced myself I would never seek again.
I should pull away. Should end this unexpected merging before it goes too far, reveals too much.
But I don't.
Instead, I tighten my hold on her waist, pressing her more firmly against me, surrendering to the magic that binds us in this moment.
Is this what a true binding feels like? The markings glow beneath our feet as do the sigils on our wrists.
"I feel you," she whispers, her voice filled with wonder. "Your pain. Your rage. Your—" She stops, as if uncertain how to name what else she senses in me.
"Yes," I acknowledge, beyond the point of denial. "And I feel you. Your fear. Your confusion. Your growing strength."
She turns in my arms, facing me directly, her blue-grey eyes wide with a newfound understanding. "You're not what I thought," she says softly. "Not entirely."
I should feel exposed, vulnerable—emotions I've spent centuries avoiding. Instead, I feel something dangerously close to relief.
"What did you think I was?" I ask, voice barely above a whisper.
