CHAPTER 28

Gabriel had entered rooms with armed men, burning exits, and orders designed to make survival statistically unreasonable.

Nothing had ever required more control than standing still while Adriana removed his earpiece.

She held it between two fingers.

"May I?" she asked.

"Yes."

The word came rougher than he intended.

Adriana placed the earpiece on the dining table beside the signed authority agreement. Then she reached beneath the hem of his shirt, found the compact weapon secured at the small of his back, and stopped before touching it.

"May I remove this?"

"Yes. Finger outside the guard. Release at the left side."

Her mouth curved slightly. "I know."

"I know you know."

"Then do not turn instruction into reassurance."

"Understood."

She removed the weapon with practiced care, cleared it, and placed it inside the study lockbox. She set the key on the mantel rather than in her pocket.

Visible.

Available.

Not claimed by either of them.

Gabriel watched every decision.

Adriana returned to him.

"The perimeter is Valentina's," she said. "The internal alarms require two authorizations. I can leave the house, this room, or you."

"Yes."

"You are here because I invited you as an investigative operative. That invitation does not create permission for anything personal."

"No."

"I want you personally."

Heat moved through him with enough force to make stillness painful.

"Tell me what you want," he said.

"Not yet. First you."

Gabriel held her gaze.

Honesty had become the only acceptable risk.

"I want to kiss you until I forget every order I have ever obeyed," he said. "I want to touch you without measuring the nearest exit. I want to hear you tell me what you want and know you can change your mind before, during, or after any part of it."

Adriana's breathing changed.

"Anything else?"

"Yes."

"Say it."

"I want to make you feel protected without making you feel contained. I do not yet know how to separate those instincts perfectly. So I will ask. Every time the answer matters."

She stepped close enough that the front of her body almost touched his.

"Kiss me," she said.

Gabriel did.

This kiss did not begin with surprise or end with restraint imposed from fear. He touched her jaw only after she leaned into his hand. When her fingers slid into his hair, he allowed his control to bend rather than break.

Adriana kissed with the same intelligence she brought to every confrontation. She tested the pressure of his mouth, changed the angle, drew back enough to watch whether he followed.

He did not.

"Good," she whispered.

The praise struck deeper than command.

She kissed him again.

Gabriel's hands remained at her waist until she moved one to the small of her back herself.

"Closer," she said.

He brought her against him.

Desire had already hardened every line of his body. Adriana felt it and did not retreat. Her forehead rested briefly against his jaw.

"You have spent days pretending you are made of restraint," she said.

"I am made of choices."

"Then choose me."

"I do."

"That was not permission to stop asking."

"No."

Her smile touched his throat before her mouth did.

Gabriel closed his eyes.

She unbuttoned his shirt one button at a time. At the third, she found the leather sheath that had carried Elena's brass key against his chest.

The sheath was empty now. The key lay with the oath case under divided custody.

Adriana traced the pale line the leather had left against his skin.

"Fourteen years," she said.

"Yes."

"Tonight you are not wearing her command."

"No."

"Do you know what you are wearing?"

Gabriel looked down at her hand.

"Your permission to be here."

"Revocable."

"Always."

She pushed the shirt from his shoulders.

The scar along his ribs came from a maritime extraction she had never heard about. Another crossed the top of his shoulder. Adriana touched neither without asking.

"May I?"

"Yes."

Her fingertips followed the older scar near his ribs.

Gabriel's muscles tightened beneath the contact.

"Does it hurt?"

"No."

"Does this?"

She kissed the scar.

"No."

It did something more dangerous.

He lifted his hands and stopped near the buttons of her blouse.

"May I?"

Adriana held his gaze. "Yes. Slowly."

Gabriel opened the first button, then the next. He had disarmed explosives with less concentration. Warm skin appeared beneath ivory silk. The gold medallion rested between her breasts, no longer merely Elena's key but Adriana's authority made visible.

He touched the edge of it.

"May I remove this?"

"No."

His hand stopped immediately.

Adriana's eyes darkened.

"I want it on me," she said. "Not because my mother is in this room. Because it belongs to me now."

"Then it stays."

He opened the remaining buttons.

When the blouse fell away, Gabriel did not fill the silence with praise that could turn her body into territory. He looked because she had chosen to be seen.

"Tell me," she said.

"You are beautiful."

"That sounded dangerously simple."

"The rest is not language fit for a report."

Her laugh broke against his mouth.

Then she guided his hand to her breast.

Gabriel asked her name like a question.

"Yes," Adriana whispered.

He touched her through lace first, learning pressure from the way she breathed. When she arched into his palm, he repeated the movement. Her fingers tightened at his shoulders.

"More," she said.

He moved the lace aside and gave her more.

The sound she made altered the entire room.

No alarm had ever sharpened his attention so completely.

Gabriel kissed her throat, then paused.

"Bedroom?"

"Yes."

"Walk or carry?"

Adriana's eyes flashed. "Carry me because I asked, not because you have decided where I am going."

"Tell me."

"Carry me upstairs."

He lifted her.

She wrapped her legs around his waist, not passive for a second, directing his mouth back to hers while he crossed the hall. The house remained protected by a system neither of them controlled alone. No earpiece transmitted his breathing. No weapon pressed between them.

At the bedroom door, Gabriel stopped.

"Still yes?"

"Yes. Put me down inside."

He obeyed.

Adriana closed the door herself.

The one bed no longer belonged to a storm or tactical necessity. It belonged to a choice made after authority changed.

She undressed him with patient hands. He undressed her only where she guided him. Every time desire urged speed, Gabriel returned to the discipline of attention.

Not restraint for its own sake.

Listening.

When he knelt before her, Adriana's breath caught.

"May I touch you?" he asked.

"Yes."

"With my mouth?"

Her fingers moved into his hair.

"Yes."

Gabriel kissed the inside of her thigh and waited.

"Higher," she said.

He obeyed.

The first taste of her nearly destroyed every measured thought he possessed. Adriana opened beneath his mouth by choice, directing him with her hands and the precise changes in her voice. When she wanted more pressure, she said it. When sensation became too sharp, she told him to slow.

He did.

Her climax came with his name spoken not as plea but command.

Gabriel held her through it only after she pulled him closer.

When she drew him up the bed, her face was flushed and unguarded.

"Your turn to ask," she said.

His body ached with need.

"May I be inside you?"

Adriana touched his mouth.

"Yes. With protection. In the drawer."

He found it where she indicated, returned, and waited while she watched him.

"Do you want me above you?" he asked.

"Not yet. Lie down."

Gabriel obeyed.

Adriana came over him, the medallion warm against her skin. She set the pace. She took him slowly, stopping when his hands tightened against the sheets.

"Touch me," she said.

"Where?"

She guided one hand to her hip and the other between them.

"Here. And here."

He followed her instruction.

The sight of her choosing every inch of him was almost unbearable. Gabriel had spent years believing surrender meant failure of control. Beneath Adriana, surrender became attention without command.

She moved faster.

He said her name.

"Stay still," she whispered.

Gabriel did.

Every muscle in his body strained beneath the order, but he did not take over. He let her use his strength without yielding her authority to it.

When pleasure broke through her again, she bent over him, forehead against his, and said, "Now."

Only then did Gabriel move.

He turned them with her consent, braced above her, and asked before every change of pace until language dissolved into breath and touch. Adriana met him without retreat, hands at his back, mouth against the scar through his eyebrow when he finally lost the last careful edge of control.

Afterward, Gabriel remained above her for one suspended second.

"May I stay?" he asked.

Adriana's expression softened.

"Yes. Beside me."

He moved immediately.

She curled against his chest by choice.

The medallion rested between them.

Gabriel did not feel absolved.

He felt trusted for one night under terms he had no right to extend beyond it.

That was more intimate than forgiveness.

It was also more fragile.
