CHAPTER 46

Gabriel heard Adriana's distress pulse once.

He did not mistake it for permission to abandon the plan.

He used it exactly as she had defined it.

Immediate grave harm.

Intervention authorized.

The control-wing door had sealed from the inside. Valentina reached the manual release panel while Gabriel checked the narrow observation window.

Adriana stood behind the central workstation.

Kade was separated from her by a transparent containment barrier, knife in hand.

Marian Sloane remained trapped behind administrative glass on the far side of the room.

Adriana was alive.

Unrestrained.

In control of the console.

Kade struck the barrier again.

A white fracture line appeared near the lower hinge.

"Thirty seconds," Valentina said.

"We do not have thirty."

Gabriel pulled the emergency break on the dual-release holster.

The mechanism snapped with a permanent metallic click.

Use recorded.

Authority preserved.

He drew the sidearm.

Valentina entered the override code.

The control-wing door opened four inches, then stopped against a bent floor track.

Gabriel put his shoulder into it.

Pain flashed down his right arm from the tunnel impact. The opening widened.

"Rossi," Valentina warned.

He forced another six inches and slipped through sideways.

Kade saw him.

The knife withdrew from the barrier.

Adriana's eyes met Gabriel's.

She did not look relieved.

She looked precise.

"Kade has a blade," she said. "Sloane is contained. The lower hinge is failing."

Information.

Not plea.

Gabriel moved left, keeping the workstation between himself and the fracture line.

"Kade," he said. "Drop the knife."

Kade smiled.

"You finally got permission."

"Yes."

The word erased whatever accusation Kade had prepared.

The containment gate shuddered.

Kade struck the damaged hinge with his boot.

The transparent panel jumped in its housing.

Adriana shifted toward the secondary console.

Gabriel tracked both her position and Kade's hands.

"Your order is public," Gabriel said. "Your principal is recorded. There is no extraction left to complete."

"There is always an extraction."

Kade kicked again.

The lower hinge tore loose.

The barrier tilted toward Adriana.

She moved before Gabriel shouted.

One hand hit the console release. The upper mount disengaged, and the entire panel dropped diagonally between Kade and the room.

Kade rolled over the fallen edge.

Gabriel fired once into the floor two feet from his path.

"Stop."

Kade changed direction.

Not toward Gabriel.

Toward Adriana.

The knife remained low beside his thigh, hidden from anyone watching from the wrong angle.

Gabriel crossed the distance.

Kade turned at the last second and slashed upward.

The blade entered Gabriel's left shoulder below the collarbone.

Heat.

Pressure.

No collapse.

Gabriel caught Kade's wrist with his free hand and drove it away from Adriana.

Kade used the embedded knife as leverage, twisting.

Pain broke white across Gabriel's vision.

He did not fire while the muzzle crossed the room.

Adriana struck Kade from behind with the heavy metal medallion reader she had torn from the console.

The edge hit the base of his skull.

Kade staggered.

Mutual rescue.

Not cargo.

Not witness.

Partner.

Gabriel ripped the knife free from his shoulder and let it fall.

Blood spread beneath his shirt.

Kade recovered faster than a lesser man would have. He drew a compact pistol from an ankle holster and turned toward Adriana.

Gabriel fired.

One round entered Kade's chest.

Kade kept raising the weapon.

Gabriel fired again.

The second round drove him backward against the fallen barrier.

His pistol struck the floor.

Kade slid down and did not rise.

The room became very quiet.

Gabriel kept his weapon trained until Valentina entered and kicked Kade's gun away.

"Clear," she said.

Adriana remained beside the console, breathing hard.

Blood marked one side of her palm where the torn reader casing had cut her.

Gabriel saw the injury before he registered his own.

He holstered the sidearm in the broken mechanism and approached her.

"Are you hurt?"

She looked at the blood spreading down his chest.

"That question has become offensive."

"Adriana."

"My hand. Superficial."

"Show me."

"No."

The refusal stopped him.

She pointed toward a chair.

"Sit down."

He obeyed.

Valentina secured Kade, confirmed death, then opened the external channel.

"Control room secure. Kade is down. Sloane alive. We need medical entry under independent observation."

Behind the administrative glass, Sloane had gone still.

Her composure had cracked into something closer to hatred.

Adriana stood over Gabriel.

"Can you move your arm?"

"Yes."

"Without lying."

"Partially."

She opened his jacket and pressed folded gauze from the emergency wall kit against the wound. Her hands were steady.

The first time she had treated an injury he tried to dismiss, they had still been negotiating whether she was allowed to know where he intended to take her.

Now she possessed the evidence, the building, the decision, and every truth he had surrendered too late.

He wanted to touch her.

He did not.

"Pressure," she ordered.

Gabriel placed his hand over the gauze.

Adriana turned to Sloane.

The glass barrier carried their reflections over the trapped woman.

"You are going to be transferred," Adriana said.

Sloane laughed.

"To your brother's basement?"

"No."

"Cross custody?"

"No."

"Then you have learned nothing. Every custodian becomes an owner."

"That is why there will be more than one."

Sloane's smile disappeared.

Adriana opened the publication channel.

"Marian Sloane will be held under divided custody," she said clearly for the cameras. "Outside counsel, independent evidence monitors, federal observers, and designated representatives from affected families will receive simultaneous notice of every movement."

"You cannot govern by committee," Sloane said.

"I am not governing. I am preventing you from disappearing."

Medical personnel arrived behind Sofia and two federal marshals whose authority had been established after the public release.

Gabriel watched them verify the order before touching anyone.

Adriana required each name on the record.

She required the receiving hospital.

She required counsel access.

She required Sloane's restraints to be visible on camera and medically justified.

Only after every condition was documented did she let them approach Gabriel.

A paramedic cut his shirt around the wound.

Adriana stepped back.

The distance hurt more cleanly than the knife.

He had no right to ask her to close it.

As the paramedic prepared the bandage, Gabriel looked toward the control barrier.

Sloane was contained.

Kade was dead.

The system was exposed.

Adriana stood in the center of it all, blood on her palm and authority in her voice.

He had arrived after she saved herself.

Exactly as she had promised she would.
