Chapter 50 #2

“We need to talk about what we are going to do with Macy; we don’t have much time after your last encounter. I don’t want her coming back, and we aren’t ready for her,” he says, all hunger gone from his voice; now he is serious. I pull in a breath.

“How do you know we don’t? I know we plan to take her out, I was just hoping we would have more time.

” I think Macy has done some awful things to both of us, and I want her to face consequences, but I also want to make sure I am ready to take her out.

I’m not dying this time. I have a Lexus with me, someone she has no idea about.

Part of me is still so worried that even after everything I am, Macy is still going to find a way to rip me from this life.

Gaelan lifts my chin, breaking me out of my thoughts, and our eyes lock.

“She has seen you now, and she was unable to kill you.” He closes his eyes for a second.

When he opens them, the blue flames in them are angry, but not at me; he never looks at me with these eyes.

They’re only for her. “You have shown that she will need more to try to kill you. You have become her new challenge, one she’s going to be intent on winning.

” The last of his words makes more fear coil in my stomach.

“She won’t win, Gaelan; I’m not going to let her,” I say firmly

“Neither of us is going to let that happen.” His voice is so sure that I believe him. I also believe in us.

He grins, then leans forward and kisses my lips lightly.

“What about her father? She threatened that she was going to tell him.” My words make Gaelan laugh.

“She won’t tell him yet. Macy is always trying to outdo everyone, even her father.”

I nod. “So, what’s the plan? When do we leave?” I hope I have some time.

“I will be going in first with Leah, hopefully—”

I lift my hand, cutting him off. “I’m coming with you, Gaelan, don’t shut me out.” My eyes plead with him, my voice firm and unmoving. “You said we were going to do this together. So that means every step of the way”

He shakes his head, pinning me with serious eyes. “It’s just the first part; it has been a long time since I have set foot in the palace, so I want to map it out completely. Make sure the path is safe for us.”

“I’m coming with you, Gaelan,” I repeat.

“I don’t care if it’s just to map something out.

” I lock eyes with him. “Don’t you think that us being separated could be what always rips us apart?

” If he won’t take me, I’m going to go anyway.

I’m the Book Reader. This is just as much my fight as it is his.

He sighs deeply and then chuckles lightly. “In all our lives together, you have always been the one thing to always test me.” He says.

“What does that mean?” I reply with a frown.

He takes my face in both hands. “It means I love you with everything in me.” He kisses my lips deeply, making me moan. When he pulls back, he rests his forehead on mine. “Fine, you can come. I want Lexus to understand what we are doing, to be ready.”

“She was ready the second she found out about Macy; she wants her head, too. What happens after we map out the palace?”

“We invade, keeping all guards and reapers away from her so we have a chance to kill her.” His voice has a dark edge to it, one I know is only saved for battles.

“The book knows how to be rid of her.” I twist my body slightly, showing him the spell of scroll writing running along my side.

“This is a power absorber; it will make her mortal so we can kill her. Her powers will become mine…” My voice comes across as worried, as it should.

I don’t know what her powers are, or how long I will have them for.

Gaelan runs his hands down my back, soothing me. “Do you know if you will keep them?” he asks.

“I don’t know. I’ve not read too much into it. I noticed it on my body after I faced her. It’s like the book knows what I need…When I run my hands over the spells, I know what they are.” I look up at him, steering the conversation back to the matter at hand. “When do we leave?

“In two moons, it will give us enough time to prepare and for you to do some reading,” he says, grinning at me.

“What’s the smile for?” I ask him

“What do you think about staying here for those days? We can see what it’s like to live in Westery after all these years, plus the book is here, so it will be easier for you.”

“That sounds amazing, our first little romantic getaway!” I lean forward and kiss his lips softly.”

Gaelan laughs as he lifts his hand and shimmers in a bottle of black and two glasses. I raise an eyebrow at him.

“Are you going to get me drunk and do bad things to me?” I tease and wiggle my eyebrows.

“I don’t need to get you drunk to do bad things to you, my Rose.

Being your mate allows me that privilege,” he hands me the glasses, then opens the bottle and pours us two large shots.

“This is just for fun,” he says, taking a glass and clinking it with mine.

“To our plan and finally being able to live.” His words make my heart beat faster.

To be able to live. To not be taken out of this happiness and feel all the pain that we both have over the centuries.

I clink his glass and we both down the shot, the black coating my throat before it sparks my blood, making me a little lightheaded.

“To our plan.”
