CHAPTER 47

Nikolai reached Volkov House through the northern service corridor Caterina had identified and hated every meter he was required to wait.

Gold custody tab removed.

Threat confirmed.

Adrian held tactical release authority jointly with Daria under the protocol Caterina designed. Nikolai could not advance the teams alone merely because fear made speed feel righteous.

Adrian read the signal.

Daria authenticated it.

Only then did the three entry routes open.

North corridor.

Employee passage.

River archive access.

No assault on the public gate.

No spectacle Galina could use as proof of invasion.

By the time Nikolai entered the council chamber, Caterina had already opened the archive and Adrian had Maksim alive on the floor.

The mark across her cheek entered Nikolai's body like a command from the oldest part of him.

Kill the man.

Remove her.

End uncertainty through force.

He asked what she required.

She chose command.

Then the archive lights died.

A mechanical alarm sounded below.

Daria checked the building plan. "Fire-suppression override. Old halon replacement system connected to the paper vault. If it discharges under heat, the seals lock every lower door."

Galina moved toward the western exit.

Nikolai stepped into her path.

"Where is the manual control?"

She looked at Caterina's reddening cheek and smiled.

"Ask your queen."

Caterina stood at the archive entrance with Galina's elder seal in one hand. "The control architecture is provisioning, not security. She designed it to protect inventory from theft."

"And destroy records during seizure," Daria said.

Smoke began rising from below.

Not accidental fire.

A delayed ignition line in the archive stacks.

Workers remained in the building.

Aleksandr had been moved into the hall by the joint team, but twenty-one staff members were still crossing the eastern corridor under evacuation orders. The fire system could seal them behind internal partitions if activated incorrectly.

Nikolai looked toward Caterina.

"You have the architecture."

"Yes."

"I hold the corridor."

"Yes."

No debate over final authority.

No performance of unity.

Division based on competence.

Caterina descended toward the archive controls with Daria and two evidence officers.

Nikolai remained at the chamber entrance with Adrian.

Maksim knelt restrained between them.

Galina stood beneath the family crest as though the room still recognized her authority.

"You let her go below," she said.

"She chose the position."

"A husband who permits danger is weak."

"A husband who believes permission is his to grant has learned nothing."

Her expression hardened.

Gunfire struck the north corridor.

Galina loyalists had reached the inner hall.

Nikolai moved behind the stone column and returned two controlled shots. One attacker fell with a wound to the thigh. The second withdrew.

Adrian pulled Maksim into cover without loosening the restraints.

"You could kill him now," Galina said. "He knows too much to survive your humiliation."

Adrian's knife remained sheathed.

"That is how you used me," he said.

The words altered something in her face.

Recognition.

Not remorse.

Nikolai heard Caterina through the lower comm.

"The archive has three partition zones. Galina linked the suppression release to the employee exits. If we open the vault, the worker corridors seal."

"Can you isolate them?"

"I need the provisioning sequence."

Nikolai looked at Galina.

"Give it to her."

"No."

He did not threaten.

Threats wasted time when consequence had already been decided.

He turned to Maksim. "Sequence."

Maksim looked toward Galina.

Adrian tightened one hand on his shoulder.

Not pain.

Reminder.

"She kills contractors after completion," Nikolai said. "Ivan Petrov. The Facility Four supervisors. The men used at Dock Nine. You were never intended to survive the council chamber."

Maksim's jaw tightened.

Galina said, "He lies."

Nikolai nodded toward the western wall. "Your escape route is open. His is not."

Maksim understood.

The distinction between loyalty and disposal entered him visibly.

"Four-seven-two-one," he said. "Then provisioning class red."

Caterina entered the sequence below.

The alarm changed pitch.

One partition opened.

Two remained closed.

"Incomplete," Caterina said.

Maksim stared at the floor.

Adrian moved closer. "You can give us the rest or let the fire decide how useful she finds you."

"Second sequence is physical," Maksim said. "Two brass levers behind the east archive panel. Opposite directions."

Caterina found them.

"They cannot be moved by one person," she said.

Daria took the second lever.

They pulled.

The employee exits opened throughout Volkov House.

Workers began clearing the building.

The archive vault remained sealed around the ledgers.

Galina stepped backward.

Her hand moved inside her coat.

Nikolai saw it.

So did Adrian.

Neither fired.

Aleksandr stood in the hall behind her, supported by a guard.

Galina drew a compact pistol and aimed not at Nikolai.

At her brother.

A dead organization head could be blamed on the rescue.

A wounded one could testify.

Nikolai fired once.

The round struck Galina's wrist.

The weapon fell.

She looked at him with shock greater than pain, as though family should have protected her from consequence after she tried to murder it.

"You chose her," Galina said.

Nikolai kept the weapon trained on the floor beside her hand.

"I chose truth over your authority. She taught me the difference."

Below them, the archive fire intensified.

Caterina's voice came through the comm. "The vault requires the elder seal and heir seal simultaneously."

Galina's seal remained in Caterina's hand.

Nikolai looked at his steel ring.

The reader was below.

The corridor between them had begun filling with smoke.

A commander said, "We extract now. Fire crews can attempt the vault."

Extraction would preserve Nikolai.

It would abandon Caterina beneath the building.

A unilateral rush toward her could block the worker route and collapse the protocol she was using.

He made neither mistake.

"Adrian holds the chamber," Nikolai said. "Keep Galina and Maksim alive."

His brother looked at him. "Your shoulder."

"Functional."

"That was not my question."

Nikolai understood the correction.

"It hurts," he said. "I can still complete the task."

Adrian nodded.

No command disguised as concern.

No lie disguised as endurance.

Nikolai entered the smoke.

At the bottom of the archive stair, Caterina stood before a steel vault door with soot darkening one side of her face. Daria held the worker partition open behind her.

The two seal readers waited six feet apart.

One Galina's.

One his.

"The doors will close when we activate them," Caterina said. "We have twenty seconds to enter before suppression discharges."

"Evidence officers?"

"Ready."

"Exit route?"

"Not yet confirmed."

Old fear opened beneath his ribs.

No exit.

Affection as vulnerability.

A route enemies could use.

He looked at Caterina.

"Do you choose entry?"

"Yes. Do you?"

Nikolai placed his steel ring against the heir reader.

"Yes."

Caterina pressed Galina's seal to the elder field.

The vault door opened.

They entered together.

Behind them, the suppression system began counting down.
