Chapter 18 #2

His erection lies hard against his stomach, the head wet above the dark hair at its base. I close my fingers around him and stroke once from root to tip. Artur’s hips move despite his attempt to remain still.

I explore him as slowly as he explored me. The thick vein along the shaft shifts beneath my palm. The skin near the head is softer, drawing back when my thumb circles the wet opening.

I bend and touch my tongue to the drop there. Artur’s abdomen contracts, and his cock grows harder in my hand, the head darkening while I circle it once with my mouth.

He doesn’t push closer; one hand grips the sheet, giving the need somewhere else to go.

I take him deeper until the thick head reaches the back of my tongue, then withdraw slowly. The quiet sound he makes belongs only to this bed.

Artur reaches into the nightstand and tears open a condom. He rolls it over himself before drawing me onto my side. One hand hooks my leg over his hip while the other guides his cock toward my wet opening.

I pull him closer with my leg.

He enters in one slow movement, and the stretch opens me around him without pain, each inch distinct until our hips meet. I press my forehead against his, holding him there while my body adjusts.

The position leaves our bodies aligned from chest to knee. My breasts press against him while his scar rests beneath my palm. His cock fills me deeply, held by the leg around his waist.

I can see every reaction, from the way his brow draws together when I tighten to the parting of his lips when I move back. The cords in his neck ease whenever I return, leaving Artur nowhere to hide pleasure behind command when distance and speed no longer conceal him.

Artur begins moving: each stroke is short and deep, more pressure than impact. His hand moves up my spine while his mouth hovers beside mine to catch every sound.

I kiss him while we move, and Artur’s control stays gentle, expressed through the care he takes with my body. He adjusts when my leg tires, supporting my thigh without losing the pace. When I tighten around him, he slows to feel it.

Our mouths separate only for breath before he kisses the corner of mine, then the sensitive place below my ear with the same concentration he gives every security plan.

Although I want to tell him he can’t organize this into safety, I pull him closer instead; for a little longer, affection can remain physical.

Pleasure returns as a low ache, and I slide my hand between us, but Artur reaches first. My thighs open farther as his fingers find my clitoris while he continues moving inside me.

The angle keeps his scar beneath my other palm.

I feel his breath, his heartbeat, and the subtle tightening that warns me he is close.

My second orgasm begins quietly: a soft contraction becomes another, pulling him deeper while I breathe his name against his mouth.

Artur’s rhythm breaks as he pushes fully inside me and comes with his forehead against mine, his body trembling through each pulse inside the condom.

Neither of us moves away.

He remains inside me until his breathing slows, then withdraws carefully. After removing the condom, he ties it and places it in the wastebasket.

For once, he returns to the bed.

Artur lies in my arms with his head beneath my chin. One heavy leg rests between mine while my fingers move over the short hair at the back of his head.

His body is heavier in rest than it ever feels above me; the trust lies in that weight. He allows his shoulder to press into my breast and his breath to warm the center of my chest, offering no apology for needing somewhere to settle.

He doesn’t reach for a phone or begin dressing.

“Katie,” he says.

The tone makes my hand stop.

His mouth opens, then closes. “The bathroom door should be rehung. It catches along the floor.”

The practical offer is so transparently substituted that tenderness presses painfully against my chest.

“A moving declaration.”

“The hinge is inadequate.”

I kiss his hair. “Thank you.”

He understands I’m not thanking him for the door.

We stay that way until sunlight reaches the foot of the bed. Artur’s weight grows heavier as the last tension leaves his shoulders. My arm begins to numb beneath him, but I refuse to move because he has spent too many years treating rest as a lapse in security.

When he finally lifts his head, the skin beneath one eye bears a faint crease from my breast, and I touch it with one finger. Artur catches my hand and kisses the center of my palm before he can reconsider the tenderness.

“You slept,” I say.

“Briefly.”

“Without paying me.”

“Your demands may arrive later.”

“Breakfast and coffee. I have modest ambitions.”

Neither of us jokes about the kiss.

Love is too large a word for nearly two weeks of marriage and danger. Still, its first edge appears with Artur in my arms, trusting me not to turn comfort into leverage.

Later that afternoon, he puts on a suit and becomes formal.

I recognize the retreat before he announces it.

“Until the war is contained, I’ll sleep in the secure office at the mansion,” he says. “The arrangement reduces movement between properties.”

His tie lies perfectly centered while the overnight bag beside the bedroom door has been packed with the efficiency of a retreat planned during the hours he remained in my arms. He stands far enough from the bed that he can’t touch me without making a visible decision.

“The office with a bed you’ve used for ten years?”

“Yes.”

His gaze avoids the mattress where he let me touch every scar.

Desire hasn’t left him; fear has simply found a clean shirt and business language.

“Shared schedules require notice,” I say. “You’ve given it.”

Artur looks surprised that I don’t fight.

I let him leave.

The door closes without anger, and after his vehicle leaves, I sit on the edge of the bed, understanding the retreat even while it hurts. Last night he gave me the memory he built his life around; this morning, he let me hold his body without asking what I wanted in return.

I read the distance as his attempt to contain what frightened him. Moving to the secure office turns our morning back into procedure.

At eleven that night, the safe house feels too quiet. I speak to Cherry, read half a book, then occupy the entire bed on principle.

His absence changes practical details first: the bathroom stays dry after my shower, one glass waits beside the sink, and the security screen glows without Artur reaching across me to check it.

I feel the hurt later, when I turn a page and realize I have been listening for his breathing instead of reading.

The front lock turns shortly after midnight.

Artur knocks against the open door before entering the bedroom with an overnight bag.

He has removed his tie, though the collar remains closed, and fatigue shadows his eyes. Seeing me in the center of the bed loosens his mouth before he restores the formal expression he brought from the mansion.

“The mansion mattress is defective,” he says.

I close my book. “The same mattress you’ve slept on for ten years?”

“Its condition has deteriorated.”

“Since this afternoon?”

“Rapidly.”

I lift the blanket on his side.

His shoulders loosen so quickly that the performance can’t hide his relief. He crosses the room before I can change my mind, placing the bag beside the duffel I still keep packed within reach.

Artur sets down the bag and removes his jacket; the formality leaves with it.

He climbs into our bed. “I’ve come to inspect the safe-house mattress personally.”
