Chapter 28
The station at Mason's Clear was smaller than most Trunk had passed through that week, hardly more than a platform and a shed, but it had a station master, and a station master usually knew a town's business better than anybody else in it.
"I'm looking for the general store," Trunk said, stepping down. "Fellow by the name of Tolliver runs it, I believe."
"That's right, Samson Tolliver. Store's easy enough to find." The station master pointed down the main street. "Straight on past the church, can't miss it, big sign out front says Tolliver's on it."
"Obliged to you." Trunk settled his hat. “Where are the bags put when they’re unloaded?”
The station master pointed, and Trunk went to stand with a handful of others.
He wondered what kind of man he'd find behind the counter. This man was about to become considerably richer than he'd woken up that morning believing himself to be, and Trunk had learned, over the years, that there was no predicting how a fellow might take news like that.
