Chapter Eleven #2
Marco leaned casually against the edge of the table, crossing his arms over his chest. He looked at his wife with a mixture of worship and deep amusement.
He had surrendered to her strategic superiority weeks ago, but watching her routinely dismantle her Bratva brothers never failed to entertain him.
"She makes a valid point, Sasha," Marco offered helpfully, his Italian accent thick with suppressed laughter. "The stupidity at the docks was quite profound."
"You are not helping, Italian," Sasha growled, glaring at his brother-in-law.
Before the argument could escalate into a physical sparring match, the doors of the war room clicked open again.
The atmosphere in the room shifted so violently and instantaneously it was as if someone had thrown a switch. The rigid, aggressive postures of the men melted away.
Tamara Voronin stepped into the room.
She wore a soft, sweeping dress of pale gray wool, her dark hair falling in gentle, natural waves over her shoulders. She carried a silver tray holding a fresh carafe of coffee and a small plate of pastries. She looked like an ethereal, untouched angel drifting into a den of wolves.
Sasha immediately pushed off the table, crossing the room to take the silver tray from her hands before she could walk another three steps.
"You do not need to carry this, Tamara," Sasha murmured, his voice dropping an entire octave into a soft, gravelly rumble of devotion. He set the tray on a side table, turning back to look at his wife with a tenderness that still shocked everyone in the room.
"I wanted to bring it to you," Tamara smiled, her silver-gray eyes bright and serene. She looked past Sasha, her gaze landing on the sprawling map and the tense expressions of the men.
Tamara stepped forward, reaching out to gently rest her small hand against the corded muscle of Sasha’s forearm. She looked up at him, her delicate brows furrowing with a soft, undeniable worry.
"Aleksandr," Tamara said, her voice a quiet, sweet melody that commanded the attention of every killer in the room. "You are not going back to the shipping containers, are you? Or the valleys?"
Sasha’s chest physically hitched. The Butcher of Moscow looked down into the wide, anxious eyes of his wife, and his ruthless, tactical resolve instantly shattered into a million irreparable pieces.
"No," Sasha promised immediately, abandoning the assault plan he had spent three hours drafting.
Tamara let out a small, relieved sigh, her hand sliding down to interlock her fingers with his.
"Good. Because perhaps... maybe you should listen to your sister.
I cannot bear the thought of you getting hurt again, Aleksandr. Seeing you bleed...
it was terrifying. Please, let Raisa handle the planning. "
Sasha swallowed hard, his hand tightening gently around hers. He looked at Raisa, then back down at Tamara. There was absolutely no contest. He would rather surrender his entire empire than watch a single tear of anxiety form in his wife's eyes.
"I will not get hurt, Tamara," Sasha vowed, his voice thick with raw, desperate sincerity. "I will be perfectly safe. We will adjust the plan. We will do exactly as Raisa suggests."
Dmitri opened his mouth, fully intending to argue the tactical logistics of the valley, but a single, warning glare from Sasha snapped his jaw shut.
Dmitri loved his sister-in-law. Everyone loved Tamara.
She had brought a gentle light into their dark world, and Dmitri would rather walk over hot coals than be the reason her smile faded.
"Yes," Dmitri agreed loudly, coughing awkwardly into his fist. "Raisa’s plan is... brilliant. We will avoid the valley."
From her position at the desk Raisa took another slow, deliberate sip of her tea. She looked at her brothers, whipped and compliant, and then she caught Tamara’s eye.
Tamara offered her sister-in-law a very faint, almost imperceptible wink, her angelic face remaining a mask of sweet, innocent relief.
Raisa’s lips twitched. She had figured out the ultimate cheat code to the Russian underworld.
It didn't matter how stubborn, arrogant, or eager for violence her brothers were.
If she needed the men to fall in line, she didn't need to argue until she lost her voice.
She simply needed to weaponize Tamara. A single, worried glance from the angel of the household, and the deadliest men in Eastern Europe immediately surrendered their weapons.
It was a brilliantly hilarious, deeply warm dynamic that bound the family together in a way none of them had ever anticipated.
"See?" Raisa announced smoothly, setting her mug down on the map. " The tactical advantage is mine. I will draw up the revised infiltration routes by dinner."
"Of course you will," Marco murmured, walking over to wrap his arms around his wife from behind. He pressed a warm, lingering kiss to the side of her neck, fully aware of the game she was playing, and absolutely enthralled by it.

Later that afternoon, the sprawling guest suite of the western wing was quiet, the only sound the crackling of the stone fireplace.
Marco was sitting on the edge of the leather chaise lounge, pulling off his boots, while Raisa stood by the vanity mirror, removing the silver watch from her wrist.
"I am a genius," Raisa declared into the quiet room, examining her reflection with a look of unapologetic smugness. "Admit it, Marco. You are married to the greatest strategic mind of our generation."
Marco paused, a boot dangling from his hand. He looked up at his wife, his dark eyes dancing with intense, consuming amusement.
"You are a menace to society, Raisa," Marco laughed, dropping the boot to the floor. He stood up, crossing the room with a slow, predatory grace. "You are actively utilizing your sweet, angelic sister-in-law to psychologically control the leaders of the Russian underworld."
Raisa turned around, leaning back against the edge of the vanity, crossing her arms over her chest. Her sea-green eyes were bright with triumph.
"It is highly effective. I found the perfect bride, I secured the alliance, I neutralized my brothers' staggering stubbornness, and I tamed the Butcher of Moscow.
Sasha is devoted to her, and she is happy. I orchestrated a flawless victory."
Marco stopped just inches in front of her, resting his hands on the vanity on either side of her hips, trapping her in his space.
He looked down at her, marveling at the fierce, brilliant, endlessly arrogant woman he had bound his soul to.
He loved her pride. He loved her certainty in her own power.
"You are an exceptional judge of character, moya zvezda," Marco conceded softly, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly rasp that sent a shiver down her spine. "You found a queen for your brother. But your strategic brilliance has one minor flaw."
Raisa arched a pale blonde eyebrow, tilting her chin up defiantly. "Oh? And what is that, Italian?"
"You spend too much time managing your brothers," Marco murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips. He leaned in, his body brushing flush against hers. "And not nearly enough time allowing your husband to worship his own queen."
Raisa let out a soft, breathless laugh, her hands coming up to slide over the muscle of his chest, tangling her fingers in the collar of his dark shirt. "I suppose I can adjust my schedule to accommodate you."
"See that you do," Marco whispered, capturing her mouth in a slow, searing kiss that instantly burned away the syndicate logistics, the cold Russian winter, and the rest of the world.
As they moved toward the shadows of the four-poster bed, consumed by their fierce, unbroken devotion, neither of them spared a single thought for the Winter Solstice Gala approaching at the end of the week.
The board was set, the fortress was secure, and Katerina Volkov was blindly marching toward a collision that would shatter her delusional fairy tale into a thousand irreparable pieces.
