Chapter Nineteen #2

He remembered the Winter Solstice Gala. He remembered these two girls standing in front of him, looking past his monstrous reputation to speak to Tamara. He remembered the awe in their eyes as Tamara had smiled at them, treating them with a gentle, patient kindness.

Tamara had seen innocence in them. She had offered them grace.

Sasha’s jaw clenched. The girls did not have blood on their hands.

They were children, caught in the crossfire of their sister’s catastrophic vanity.

Sasha knew, with certainty, that if he slaughtered these children in cold blood, the angelic woman waiting for him back in Moscow would look at him and see the monster the rest of the world believed him to be.

He could not bring the blood of innocents back to her sanctuary.

Slowly, deliberately, Sasha lowered the barrel of his rifle just a fraction.

"Stand up, Vadim," Sasha commanded.

Vadim slowly rose to his feet, trembling so violently he could barely hold his own weight.

"I am going to offer you a choice," Sasha declared, his dark eyes shifting to the weeping girl cowering by the desk. "A generosity you do not deserve, afforded only for the sake of your youngest daughters."

Sasha pointed a, gloved finger at Katerina.

"Give up the girl who sold my family to the Odessa," Sasha ordered, the ultimatum hanging in the air with chilling finality. "Or I will execute every single person in this room, starting with your wife. Choose."

Katerina gasped, her blue eyes flying open in terror. She looked at her father, shaking her head frantically. "Papa, no! Please, no!"

Vadim Volkov did not hesitate. He looked at his wife, he looked at his crying twins, and then he looked at the daughter who had destroyed his empire for the sake of a petty jealousy.

Vadim turned his head away, closing his eyes.

"Take her," Vadim whispered.

"No!" Katerina shrieked, scrambling backward as Dmitri and two Bratva enforcers stepped forward. "Papa, you cannot! Please! I am sorry! I am sorry!"

The enforcers grabbed Katerina by her arms, hauling her violently off the floor.

She kicked and screamed, her tragic, delicate facade shattered by raw, primal terror.

They dragged her out of the study, her hysterical pleas echoing down the ruined corridors until they faded into the cold Russian night.

She would never be seen or heard from again.

Sasha stepped up to Vadim, towering over the broken man.

"The Volkov dynasty is dead," Sasha decreed, his voice cold and dangerous.

"Your wealth, your shipping lanes, your properties—they belong to the Voronins.

You have until dawn to pack whatever you can carry.

You will take your wife and your remaining daughters, and you will leave Russia.

If you ever set foot on this soil again, if I ever hear a whisper of your name in this hemisphere, I will hunt you down and finish what I started tonight. "

Sasha turned on his heel, signaling the end of the execution. He walked out of the study, followed by Raisa and Marco, leaving Vadim Volkov to weep over the ashes of his ruined empire.

By the time the armored convoys returned to the Voronin estate in Moscow, the sun had fully set, plunging the city back into the freezing, dark grip of winter. The Odessa faction had been eradicated in the south, and the Volkov threat was neutralized in the north. The vengeance was complete.

Sasha walked through the newly reinforced doors of the estate.

He handed his rifle to a waiting guard, stripping off his Kevlar vest as he ascended the grand staircase.

His body ached. His knuckles were bruised, and his mind was filled with the lingering, dark shadows of the violence he had just commanded.

He moved silently down the corridor of the eastern wing, pushing open the mahogany doors to his master suite.

The room was warm, the fire roaring in the hearth. Tamara was standing by the window. She was dressed in a soft, dark silk robe, the white bandage still stark across her forehead.

She turned as he entered. She did not recoil from the smell of cordite and cold winter air clinging to him. She did not flinch from the dark, hollow exhaustion in his eyes.

Tamara crossed the room, stepping directly into his space. She wrapped her small arms around his waist, pressing her face against his chest, welcoming the monster back into the light.

"You are safe," Tamara whispered, her voice a fierce, soothing anchor.

Sasha closed his eyes, letting out a ragged, fractured breath. He wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her dark hair. He needed to shed the death of the night. He needed to anchor his shattered, grieving soul in the only pure, untainted thing in his universe.

Sasha stepped back just enough to look at her. He didn't speak. He reached down, his large hands gripping the lapels of her silk robe, and pulled it smoothly off her shoulders, letting it pool in a dark halo on the floor.

He lifted her into his arms, carrying her to the bed, following her down into the furs.

The intimacy that followed was not gentle. It was a brutal, all-consuming claiming. Sasha was feral, driven by a primal, desperate need to feel life beneath his hands after hours of dealing death. He tore his own shirt away, his muscled body covering hers, pressing her deep into the mattress.

Tamara met his ferocity without a single trace of hesitation. She understood the agonizing darkness clawing at him, and she offered herself as his sanctuary.

He kissed her with a staggering, starving intensity, his mouth bruising and demanding, tasting the soft, yielding heat of her lips. His hands were rough as they swept over her curves, gripping her hips with a bruising, possessive force that left faint, dark marks against her pale skin.

When he drove into her, it was with a deep, relentless, consuming power.

"Aleksandr," Tamara gasped, her back arching, her nails digging fiercely into the thick musculature of his shoulders. The sheer, overwhelming friction and the commanding weight of his body consumed her.

She wrapped her legs tightly around his hips, anchoring him, taking every desperate thrust and giving back just as fiercely. She wanted him to bury his grief, his rage, and his terror inside her.

Sasha moved with a punishing, desperate rhythm.

The physical connection was a lifeline. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet, intoxicating scent of her skin, his chest heaving with the exertion.

His lips trailed hot, open-mouthed kisses over her collarbone, his teeth grazing her flesh, marking her, claiming her over and over again in the quiet darkness of the room.

They shattered together in a violent, breathtaking collision of bodies and souls. Sasha let out a rough, ragged groan, collapsing against her, his body trembling with the force of his release.

Tamara held him tightly, her arms wrapped around his broad back, whispering his name into the quiet room. She stroked his dark hair, holding the most dangerous man in Russia against her heart, pulling him back from the edge of the abyss and anchoring him safely in her love.
