Chapter 6 Dayan City Falls
That night we drove back the enemies who had charged into the camp.
The people in the city had been watching us. In the days before, batches of corpses had been carried from the mountains behind the camp.
If men in the army starved, it proved there truly was no grain.
But after the enemy came, they found it was all a ruse. The way the soldiers held their swords did not look like men who had gone hungry for days.
We finally stormed into the second largest city in the realm—Dayan City.
The moment The General entered the city he held a victory feast. On the platform he raised his cup to us: "To the brothers who died."
To deceive the people in the city, the higher-ups had hidden the grain. Quite a few soldiers below had starved.
The General's eyes were red. He said he would properly comfort the families of the dead soldiers.
But those men were either of refugee stock or had been seized by force. The General likely would never find their families.
Zhang Ming stood beside The General and looked at me from afar.
