Inspector Melrose’s Last Case

By Iris Blackburn and Emma Gordon

As the train bore him northward, Chief Inspector Melrose let out a long sigh of relief.

He had done it, he had walked away from Scotland Yard.

They hadn’t wanted to see him go. They had begged and pleaded, offered him more money, even offered him a promotion that would have meant a desk job.

But he’d turned them down and done what he’d wanted to do for years.

To go home to Scotland, back to a place where life made sense, where he felt free, with the chance to be reborn.

The letter, of course, had made all the difference.

They had exchanged correspondence all these years, polite but friendly letters with a sprinkling of news.

But this latest letter had said that her father had died.

She was thinking of leaving Kyle and doing a bit of travelling.

Was he still in London, because she’d love to visit him sometime.

His pulse grew a little faster at the thought.

“Be reasonable, laddie,” he told himself.

“You’re a fifty-year-old man. She’s a middle-aged woman.

” Too late for romance and passion. But it was worth a try, wasn’t it?

To come back to a place that had called to him so long ago and maybe find her there.

He glanced out of the train window, willing the journey to go faster.
