Chapter 57
‘So, let me get this straight, instead of just texting him to let him know Oscar was back, like a normal person would, you sent him a note via the cat?’
‘Tim! You’re freaking me out. I thought it would be a cool, you know, gesture or whatever. And anyway, you’re not focusing on the actual issue here. I asked him out on a date. Isn’t that what you told me to do?’
She paused, waiting for Tim to reply.
‘I did, yes,’ he agreed eventually. ‘But you could have just messaged him?’
‘I know, but his text to me had been so… oh, I don’t know… matter of fact.’
‘Okay, but maybe he was just in a hurry or something? Anyway, I’m proud of you.
I know it’s taken a lot for you to put yourself back out there.
And I’m sure you’ll hear from him again.
I’ve told you, no man would spend so much time looking for someone else’s cat unless they were interested.
Let me know how you get on. And it was a cool gesture,’ he added, before hanging up.
Jenni felt herself relax a little. Now all she could do was wait until Oscar returned from his night-time adventure, and hope to God he brought a reply from Ben back with him.
A heavy object landing on her chest woke her with a jolt.
She opened her eyes and lifted her head from the pillow to see Oscar, inches from her face, staring intensely at her, kneading the rumpled duvet cover.
She’d missed this the most, she thought, reaching to stroke his soft fur, running her hand over the curve of his back, inching her fingers up to his neck to tickle him behind the ears.
And that’s when she felt something catch against her wrist. A note.
Tugging gently, she released it, her heart beating fast, and she read the one word that she knew would change everything.
Yes. x
