Chapter 19
T he wind swept across the rooftop terrace, carrying the scent of rain-soaked concrete and distant city lights.
Roman leaned against the railing, his arms crossed tightly, as if he could ward off the unfolding storm within him.
The clouds rolled overhead, casting shadows on his chiseled features, and Amelia’s heart raced at the sight of him.
He looked powerful yet vulnerable, a stark contrast she hadn’t expected to see when they had first reconnected.
Amelia took a step closer, the chill in the air causing her breath to fog in front of her. “You’ve been quiet since dinner,” she said softly, breaking the tense silence that hung between them like the heavy clouds above. “What’s on your mind?”
He turned to her, his expression a mix of frustration and fear. “I’ve never been good at this,” he admitted, running a hand through his dark hair. “At letting people in. I was raised to be strong, to never show weakness. But now… now I feel everything too deeply.”
The admission hung in the air, and Amelia felt her heartbeat quicken. She had seen glimpses of his struggles before, but hearing him voice it made her chest tighten with empathy. “You’re not weak for wanting to feel,” she replied, her voice steady. “It takes strength to be vulnerable.”
Roman’s gaze dropped to the ground, his jaw clenching.
“You don’t know what it’s like to grow up in a world where trust is a luxury.
My father…” His voice faltered, and he inhaled sharply.
“He was a ruthless businessman, and I learned early on that everyone had an agenda. I was taught to verify everything, never to trust anyone completely.” He paused, glancing back at her, his blue eyes filled with an intensity that made her heart ache.
“I thought I could control everything, but I lost you, Amelia. I never wanted to hurt you, yet I did.”
The storm inside Roman mirrored the one brewing outside, the wind picking up as raindrops began to fall, pattering against the terrace.
Amelia stepped closer, her heart aching for the boy he had been, the man he was trying to become.
“You didn’t lose me on purpose,” she said gently.
“You were manipulated. There are things that were beyond your control, just like your childhood.”
He met her gaze with a fierce intensity. “But I should have fought harder for you. I should have trusted you, and instead, I let Claire’s lies dictate my actions. I pushed you away when I should have held you close.”
The rain began to fall more heavily, drenching the world around them, but in that moment, Amelia felt an unmistakable warmth enveloping her heart.
“We can’t change the past,” she whispered, stepping even closer until the warmth of her body brushed against the coolness of his. “But we can shape our future.”
Roman’s breath hitched, the air thick with unspoken words and the weight of their shared history. “I want to be better for you, for Lily,” he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. “I want to learn how to trust again. I want to be the man you deserve.”
Amelia’s heart swelled with a mixture of hope and fear. There was a raw honesty in his words that made her want to reach out, to bridge the gap between them. “You’re already on that path,” she said, her voice steady. “But it takes time. We both have wounds to heal.”
A flicker of vulnerability crossed his face as he stepped closer, the rain drenching his hair, framing his features in a way that sent a thrill through her. “I don’t want to lose you again, Amelia. I need you to understand that. You and Lily… you’re everything to me.”
The storm raged around them, but in that moment, the world faded away. They stood together, breaths mingling in the cool air, their past hovering like a specter. She could see the depth of his feelings, the determination in his eyes.
“I need to tell you something,” Amelia began, her voice trembling with the weight of her revelation. “Something that changes everything…”
The sound of thunder rumbled in the distance, punctuating her words, and Roman’s expression shifted, anticipation mingling with worry. She took a deep breath, knowing this was the moment that could redefine their relationship.
“Lily is—”
Before she could finish, a crack of lightning illuminated the sky, followed by the heavy downpour that surged around them, drowning out her words. The storm had arrived, but the true tempest lay within their hearts, waiting to be unleashed.
Amelia sat across the candlelit table, the soft flicker of the flames reflecting in her anxious eyes.
The intimate setting felt charged, the clinking of cutlery and distant laughter from the restaurant blending into a muted backdrop as her heart raced.
Roman’s gaze was fixated on her, his expression a mixture of curiosity and concern, urging her to share the truth that had been simmering beneath the surface for far too long.
“Amelia,” he prompted, a hint of urgency in his tone. “You said you needed to tell me something.”
She swallowed hard, the lump in her throat threatening to choke her words.
The truth of Lily loomed large in her mind, a secret that had woven itself into every fiber of her being.
It was the one thing that could either bridge the gap between them or shatter their fragile connection into pieces.
“I—” she started, her voice wavering. “I’ve been holding back because I was afraid of how you would react. ”
“Whatever it is, you can tell me,” he urged, leaning forward, his intensity almost palpable. “I won’t judge you.”
His reassurance only made the storm inside her swell.
Could she really trust him with this? The fear of rejection gripped her, threatening to pull her back into the shadows of her past. But in his eyes, she saw a flicker of something—an openness, a willingness to understand her, to embrace all that came with her.
“I need you to understand,” she began, forcing herself to meet his gaze. “The past was complicated for both of us. When I left Kingsley Tower, it wasn’t just about my career or the betrayal. It was about protecting something—someone.”
Roman’s brow furrowed, confusion mingling with concern. “What do you mean?”
Taking a deep breath, Amelia felt the tremor of vulnerability brush against her resolve. “I became a mother, Roman. Lily is… she’s ours.” The words hung in the air like a fragile promise, each syllable weighted with the gravity of her secret.
Silence enveloped them, the world around them fading into insignificance. Roman’s eyes widened in disbelief, shock sweeping across his features as he struggled to comprehend the revelation. The air felt electric, charged with the gravity of what she had just shared.
“You’re saying…” he stammered, disbelief etched in every line of his face. “Lily is my daughter?”
“Yes,” she confirmed, her voice barely above a whisper, the truth finally spilling into the open. “I never told you because I was terrified of how you would react. I didn’t want to put her in a position where you might reject her, or us.”
Roman’s expression morphed from shock to something deeper, an intense mix of emotions swirling within him.
She could see the gears turning in his mind, the realization dawning on him like the first light of dawn breaking through a stormy night.
“I can’t believe I have a daughter,” he breathed, the weight of his words heavy with astonishment. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“I thought it was for the best,” she replied, feeling the tears well in her eyes. “I wanted to protect her from the chaos that surrounded us, from the world we were caught in. I didn’t want to risk losing you again, and I thought… I thought I could do it alone.”
He leaned back in his chair, processing the revelation, his gaze drifting out the window where the rain continued to pour, matching the tumult in his heart. “You’ve been raising her all this time without me?” His voice was soft, tinged with a mix of hurt and wonder.
“I had to make a choice,” she replied, feeling the tears spill down her cheeks. “And I chose to keep her safe, to give her a life free from the shadows of our past.”
Roman swallowed hard, his expression resolute. “I want to be part of her life, Amelia. I want to know her. I want to be the father I never knew I could be.”
Amelia’s heart swelled with hope, but the fear still lingered in the air. Would he truly be able to step into the role? Could they forge a new path together, despite the scars of their past? “Are you sure?” she asked, her voice trembling. “It won’t be easy. There will be challenges.”
“I’m ready for them,” he answered, determination flooding his voice as he reached across the table, his hand covering hers, grounding her in that moment. “I don’t want to lose this chance, Amelia. Not again.”
With that, the weight of her confession hung between them, a fragile thread of hope woven through the fabric of their tumultuous history. The rain continued its relentless descent outside, but within their hearts, something new was beginning to take shape.
Amelia stood in the living room, her heart racing as the weight of her revelation settled heavily around them.
The rain drummed against the windows, a relentless reminder of the storm brewing outside and within her.
She could see Roman still grappling with the enormity of what she had just shared.
The silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating, as she prepared for the confrontation that had been years in the making.
“Lily,” she began, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.
“She’s not just a part of my life. She’s a part of yours too, whether you knew it or not.
I didn’t want to keep her from you forever, but the thought of you rejecting her…
” The words caught in her throat, a painful knot of fear and longing.
