Chapter 32
BLAKE
People swarm over Danielle, fussing and gossiping as she smiles brightly. She loves this company just as much as I do. She hides her bump well, but I can’t take my eyes away from her.
It’s all going well until fucking Issac walks in, his jaw dropping at the sight of Danielle sitting with Kiera.
“Hey.” I hate how he greets her, like they’ve got some kind of fucking connection.
Danielle nods politely but turns away, sipping on her ice water.
That’s my girl. Tell him to fuck off without telling him to fuck off.
“How are you?”
Is he kidding me?
“I’m good, thanks, you?” Danielle is barely civil. I almost feel sorry for Issac.
But then I remember he’s fucked the woman I’m in love with.
My fists clench together as his gaze moves towards my office, his expression hardening.
The man who was once my best friend, now my enemy. He strides past my office without even looking at me.
I turn my attention back to my screen, replying to an email. My phone rings, and I answer it absentmindedly.
“Is this Mr. James?” the clipped voice asks.
“Speaking.” I haven’t time for anyone trying to sell me things.
“It’s Dr. Anderson’s secretary here. I’m calling about your results.”
I freeze, my mouth drying. “Right, uh, hello. I didn’t think they were ready yet.”
Danielle walks away with Kiera, disappearing around a corner as I jump to my feet.
She needs to hear this.
“I can confirm—”
“Wait,” I command, bolting after Danielle, earning curious looks as I chase my wife.
I hold the phone to my beating heart, praying to anyone in the universe that our baby is mine.
Please. I know I’ve fucked up, but I need this. We need this.
“Danielle!” I roar, panting as I catch up to her. “The doctor's office is on the phone.”
Danielle’s smile freezes.
“Now?” she squeals out, sending an apologetic look to Keira who looks confused.
“Now.” I thrust the phone out, and she takes it, staring at me with a mixture of fear and excitement.
Glancing around us, I spot an empty office and yank the doors open, pulling her in with me. All the blinds are closed, plunging us into darkness.
I can’t find the lights, but the glow of the phone highlights the beautiful face I love so much.
“Speaker,” I rasp, tapping at the phone screen.
“Hello?” The irritated voice comes through the phone, and Danielle licks her lips.
“Hi, it’s Mrs. James.”
“And Mr. James,” I add, my hand dancing around the back of Danielle’s neck as I close my eyes, praying for good news.
“Great, so I can confirm that Mr. Blake James is the father of the baby.”
Danielle jumps into my arms, and the phone clatters to the floor, tears of joy and elation spilling from my eyes as Danielle kisses me all over my face.
I’m too choked to speak.
“Yes, Blake, yes!” Danielle whispers, our mouths meeting in a heated kiss, twisted with love and passion. I don’t even think as I squeeze her close to me, the idea that the baby I’ve been speaking to for so long being mine is too much.
“Hello?” calls the voice from the phone which is somewhere on the floor.
“We better get that.” Danielle laughs shakily.
“Right,” I agree, grinning like an idiot. “Hello, sorry.”
The woman huffs down the phone. “The result is ninety-nine percent accurate, so of course, you can rest assured that you are the father.”
I rub my head, nodding as Danielle sobs in my arms.
“Thank you.”
I end the call and wrap both arms around Danielle.
We stand like that for a while, her bump pressing against my stomach, until we can speak.
“I can’t tell you how I feel,” Danielle says, wiping her eyes with the heel of her hand.
I stroke her cheeks, cupping her face in my hands as I kiss her tenderly on the lips. “I know how you feel.”
She tips her head back, her eyes shining with relief and happiness. I want her to look like this every day.
“I love you,” I whisper, burying my head in her hair. “So fucking much.”
“Can we tell your mom now?” Danielle asks, her heart thudding against my chest.
A smile lifts my cheeks, and I imagine my mom's reaction to being a grandma.
My baby.
My wife.
