Chapter Ten #3
Outside the hospital, the moon hung low in the sky, casting its silver glow through the small window of the private room.
The ethereal light illuminated every corner, highlighting the delicate features of Amy’s face as she suckled in Zara’s arms. Exhausted yet unable to sleep, Zara held onto her daughter with a fierce protectiveness, her eyes tracing every curve and contour of Amy’s perfect, pocket-sized features.
Close beside them, Jay sat with a serene expression on his face, his dreamy gaze fixed on his newborn child.
Reaching out, he lightly brushed against Amy’s tiny fingers, eliciting a gentle squeeze that warmed Zara’s heart.
‘I can already see that she has your spirit,’ he murmured softly.
‘That’s so sweet of you to say.’ Zara smiled and her voice was tinged with awe. ‘And may she prove to have your courage,’ she whispered back.
Jay’s broad smile displayed the sheer depth of his joy. ‘My heart is seriously full to bursting.’
As dawn broke two days later, its soft light filtering through the cracks in the curtains, it brought with it a sense of wonder and excitement for their first day at home as a family.
Carefully, Zara and Jay bundled up a sleeping Amy, gathered her things, then made their way out of the hospital, feeling like they were carrying the most precious cargo in the world.
And indeed, to them, she was.
Returning to their home felt like crossing into a new world, one filled with unfamiliar sounds and scents.
But as they settled into their daily routine with Amy, everything clumsily fell into some kind of place.
Over the coming days, nappy changes became a well-choreographed dance between them, each taking care with tender hands to look after their daughter’s needs.
Feedings quickly became moments of bonding and closeness, with Zara marvelling at the connection forged with every suckle.
Even through exhaustion and sleepless nights, their love for one another, and their sweet baby girl, only grew stronger.
And as Zara gazed out the window on the beginning of their seventh week as parents and watched the vast expanse of the sky dazzling with glimmering stars, she no longer felt fear of the unknown, but instead saw endless chances and new horizons to explore.
Jay cuddled up beside her on the couch, his peaceful gaze mirroring her own emotions. ‘Look at us,’ he whispered, his voice a soothing balm to her tired soul, ‘navigating this new world together like champions.’
‘We’re doing well, aren’t we?’ Zara nodded, her hand reaching out to intertwine with his, their fingers fitting together like interlocking puzzle pieces. ‘Come on, let’s go sneak another look at her, before we head to bed.’
Tiptoeing into the nursery, they stood side by side, gazing down into the cot where their daughter slept soundly, her chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm that seemed to echo the beating of their own hearts.
‘I’ll protect our little one with my life,’ Jay vowed solemnly, his words a promise to both Zara and their child, ‘always and forever.’ ‘I know you will,’ Zara affirmed, feeling like the luckiest woman alive.
This was the kind of love that would guide them through every moment of joy and every challenge they faced as a family.
A love that would shine bright and unwavering on the shores of their future, forever guiding them back home.
Always aglow from their warmth. And a week later, as Zara stood in exactly the same spot, with Jay beside her, in a pivotal moment, her eyes shone with happy tears as she watched her daughter smile for the very first time.
Jay gasped in delight, his eyes alight with the kind of wonder and love that resonated through Zara’s bones. ‘Did you see that, Za? Our little girl just smiled.’
‘I most certainly did. She’s a clever little cupcake, our Amy.’ Zara grinned from ear to ear as she leant over and brushed her lips against her daughter’s forehead in a feather-light kiss.
As the weeks turned into months, and then they almost reached the year mark, Zara marvelled at each new milestone that Amy reached.
From grasping onto her finger with a fierce grip, to starting on solid food, to cooing as if she were talking, to taking her first unsteady steps — miraculously, while Jay was home from work.
All the while, it felt like she was witnessing the unfolding of a precious, secret world where love sprouted and blossomed from the smallest of seeds.
And through it all, within the business of parenthood, their lives settled into a rhythm as natural as breathing.
Although she sometimes, very briefly, missed her life as a flight attendant, Zara found solace in the structure of routines that revolved around Jay’s schedule as a pilot and Amy’s food, play and sleep times, with a weekly yoga class along with Suzanne helping to centre her.
Though Jay’s absences were challenging, they crossed those bridges with the strength of their bond.
While he was away, she made sure to stay active and involved in life.
Her newly joined mothers’ group was a godsend, as was Suzanne’s company when her friend was home from working her way around the world.
On the lonelier, solitary nights, she would watch the moon cast silver trails across the sky and patiently wait for Jay’s next arrival home, cradling Amy against her chest as she imagined him on the other side of the world, waking up when she was going to sleep, and vice versa.
The gentle rise and fall of her daughter’s breathing was always calming, helping to soothe the ache of missing him.
And when he did finally slip through the front door, usually at odd hours, they’d share kisses that tasted of longing and whispers that spoke of their enduring connection.
I’ve missed my girls, he would always say, his voice a low hum in the quiet house.
And your girls missed you, she’d always reply.
Whenever they could, they stole moments of tranquillity, their love acting as an unbreakable tie amid the balance of parenthood and everyday life.
It was in the stillness of Amy’s sleep that they found spaces to breathe, to dream, and to simply be together.
Jay, with his unwavering belief in their love, would draw Zara close.
And she, with her determination to forge a family stronger than any she’d ever known, nestled into the haven of his embrace.
‘Every challenge is less daunting with you,’ she said one night as they lay side by side, both blissfully floating off the cloud of euphoria they’d just reached, skin on skin, heart to heart.
‘And every joy is twice as sweet when we’re together, Za,’ Jay whispered back, his fingers tracing circles on her arm.
‘You’re right, my love,’ she replied before tucking her body up against his.
The silvery moonbeams filtering through the sheer curtains bathed the room in a soft ethereal glow. ‘Amy is everything we ever dreamt of, isn’t she?’
Jay nodded in agreement, his eyes reflecting the same luminous light that caressed her face. ‘She’s even more than that. She’s the embodiment of our love.’
A lump formed in Zara’s throat as she turned her chin to face him, their noses almost touching as they shared a moment.
‘Sometimes,’ she said softly, her words breaking through the stillness of night, ‘I think back to those years I spent feeling lost as an orphan, moving from foster home to foster home, wondering if I’d ever find a sense of belonging.
But now, with you and Amy, I feel like I’ve finally found my safe haven. My forever after.’
‘We’ve certainly weathered some storms together, haven’t we?’ Jay reached up to brush away a tear that had escaped down her cheek. ‘And every single one has only brought us closer and made us more determined to make it to the end.’
‘I really do adore you, with all of me, Jay Maverick.’
‘Ditto, Za.’ His smile met with her lips in a quick kiss. ‘And what’s more, I still can’t believe we’re pregnant again.’
‘I know.’ She breathed a happy sigh. ‘I wonder if it will be a boy this time?’
‘I honestly don’t care either way, my darling wife,’ he said, pulling her close. ‘I only care that he or she is healthy and happy when they come into this world.’
‘Me too,’ she replied, happily envisioning them as four instead of three.
And as they basked in the peacefulness of the night, their bodies intertwined as intimately as their fates, Zara was filled with wonder and amazement at the miracle of life blooming within her, embracing the joy that came from creating a family from two souls bound by an unbreakable love.
‘Imagine,’ Jay began, his voice carrying a reverence reserved for sacred things, ‘all the adventures that still lie ahead of us.’ He placed his hand ever so tenderly on her belly. ‘This little one’s first words, first steps, and then we have Amy and this one’s first days of school.’
‘Yes, and then there’ll also be their first heartbreak,’ Zara added softly. ‘Where we’ll be there to pick up the pieces, and to show both of them that even the strongest branches can bend in the storm.’
‘We sure will, because that’s what love does,’ Jay agreed, pulling her closer until they could feel each other’s heartbeat. ‘It holds on through absolutely everything.’
‘No matter what comes our way, I know we’ll always face it together, as a family should,’ Zara murmured, her mind obstinately flashing back to the doorway that had shown her things a young child should never bear witness to — the blood, her parents’ lifeless bodies.
‘Like we Mavericks do,’ she added, shaking off the unwanted feeling of grief.
‘Every trial, every triumph,’ Jay echoed, his unwavering tone enveloping them like a warm blanket. ‘I love you, Za, sweet sleep.’
‘Sweet dreams, love of my life.’ She kissed his lips then nestled against him, ready to float into the land of dreams.
With hearts full and spirits intertwined, they drifted into dreamland, as Zara looked forward to a future filled with unknown wonders.
Together, as long as everything went well, they’d get to navigate parenthood a second time around, fortified by their love and guided by their littlest star, Amy Nadine Maverick.
